Come now, it can't be that bad. I mean Drinky wrote that love poem to Shiggy back in '96 or so and he's still quite the game critic.

BTW, Prisoner of Azkaban really is the bomb. Watched it again last night and as a movie it's heads and shoulders above the other ones (save for the new one, which I can't comment on). On another note, all of the Harry Potter films are decent enough movies-for big-budget family fare it's clearly a step above the usual carnival trash we regularly get (HI THERE TRANSFORMERS).

I have on good authority that the movie was boring, nowhere near as good as Cuaron's installment and that the ending came off pretty badly.

It wasn't boring, by any means.  I enjoyed everything but the last five minutes or so.  But, when it came to the ending,
spoiler (click to show/hide)
I expected to actually see the fight that was in the book with the death eaters against the Order.  But they skipped that, and made it into "Oh well, Dumbledore and Snape landed on the tower and then Draco pops out!  Then other death eaters come up!  Then Snape shushes Harry, which lets him kill Dumbledore.  Ugh.  Okay, first things first, death eaters and the Order/DA fought under the tower.  Draco ran up and confronted Dumbledore, with Harry up there under the Invis cloak bound by the Petrificus Totalus charm Dumbledore had just put on him.  Then more death eaters came up, blah blah, but they were still fighting below.  Then Snape comes out of nowhere, and kills Dumbledore.  That didn't happen.  Goddamnit.  Also, they didn't show Dumbledore's funeral, which was something I was really looking forward to seeing.  Instead, the movie is ended with Ron, Harry, and Hermione talking for five minutes about the same stuff they were SUPPOSED to say at the funeral.  It lost part of it's impact to me.

Also, another thing.  Ginny and Harry were supposed to be dating for most of the movie, not just happening to kiss towards the end.  Half of the heartbreak was supposed to be from Harry telling Ginny at the funeral that they couldn't be together because he had to go find the horcruxes.

Rants from a harry potter fanatic/walking hp encyclopedia.   Don't read if you don't care.

spoiler (click to show/hide)
Ginny and harry are not dating for most of the book.  They hook up after griffindor win the quidditch cup when harry wasn't allowed to play(due to being in permadetention from casting sectumsempra on draco malfoy).  This happened very near to the end of the school year.

About the ending.  Apparently the director did not want to include the battle scene as he felt it would detract from the epic battle scene at the end of the 7th movie.

The issue I had was the addition of scenes not in the book that did absolutely nothing for the story.  I have no problem with additions that need to happen to move the plot, but when they add scenes that do nothing,  it just bothers me because there are scenes that could have been a lot better and actually done things for the plot.  The additional scene at the burrow where bellatrix and fenrir, not only didn't happen in the book, but didn't advance or help the plot in any way.  It was just there.  The scene at the beginning with harry flirting with the black chick didn't help anything either.  Just pointless scenes.

Also, I understand you can't explain the harry/ginny thing through harry's internal dialog like in the book, but jesus chris did they have to incorporate ginny into every scene?

Also, luna finding harry on the train.  Why?  Tonks was in the movie, there's absolutely no reason luna needed to be the one to find him.

Dumbledore was also uber-creeper in this movie.

Slughorn's performance was brilliant.

Also annoyed that they went ahead and forced the ron/hermione thing

anyways, if I think of any other issues, I'll add them later.

They don't suck, both of the first two are high quality films. Both Transformers movies are essentially lifeless, haplessly meandering special effects shows.

The first two are fun movies. More than a few meh parts spread around but overall they're entertaining regardless of whether you like the books or not. There's nothing redeeming about Transformers, and nearly everyone I know - and every review I've skimmed - suggested the sequel is even worse.

They most certainly are not.  Potter readers were pretty much every kid my age; EVERYONE, mostly.  It's something that was apart of our childhoods.  Twilight fans are walking stereotypes.  Usually fat, socially distinguished mentally-challenged women that have some sort of complex and fetish.  It's poorly written, and in a sensationalistic way.

But, you know, you like Transformers...so, yeah.

I don't think the problem is the intersection of the two, but rather the problem is LIKING TRANSFORMERS to begin with.

Edit: Man I remember buying a copy of Deathly Hallows at midnight right when it came out for my wife as a surprise gift. Scary grown women running around with their kids having marks on their foreheads and stuff. I think we can put the Potter crazies and the Twilight crazies in the same boat.

Speaking of Twilight:

Quote
ASTOUNDINGLY UNIMAGINATIVE, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince ruins the idea of popular entertainment. It’s the sixth tie-in with J.K. Rowling’s lucrative series of children’s books. All of the film versions have been pedestrian and overlong, as if trying to literally retell the book stories merely by adding up-to-date special effects—yet using them without creativity. This is the opposite of Stephenie Meyers’ Twilight book series, which was wondrously re-imagined for the big screen by Catherine Hardwicke. The Potter film industry has never employed a good director. As a result: one bad movie in a series is unfortunate, six amounts to a catastrophe.

Hardwicke IS a good director, but Cuaron's Azkaban is fantastic.

I know three or four Twilight fans who are well adjusted successful adult women. I still think they're nuts for liking Twilight, but they're all happily married, have jobs and are right in the head.

Reviewers will be wrong. PoA wont be topped.

Solo is wrong, PoA was topped.

Serioulsly, some of the cinematography hands down put Prisoner's to fucking shame. And this isn't me forgetting either, I literally watched Prisoner of Azkaban again only a few hours before going to see Half-Blood Prince.

What it comes down to is this: Even with the changes (and let me write a paragraph in parenthesis here: seriously, THESE ARE FUCKING MOVIES, THEY AREN'T THE FUCKING BOOKS. THEY ARE GOING TO CHANGE SHIT. ) I truly feel that Yates is probably the Potter director with the best sense of the books' tone and the best idea of who the characters are. The entire film is about the destruction of innocence, which is pretty much what the book is about.

Not to mention the fact that I thought this movie had some great performances in it. Broadbent as Slughorn was, yet again, another spot on perfect cast in a fucking film series that may be the best cast franchise in the history of modern cinema. The kids acted well too, even Tom Felton as Draco, who had notoriously overacted in previous films.

So basically, it's the best Potter film hands down. I was entertained from start to finish. Fucking great. If you liked PoA, you will love this one. Now I'm really looking forward to the two part conclusion to the film series as well as future films directed by David Yates.

I also had the privilege of enjoying this film while surrounded by a pack of harry potter fans. They consistently laughed, gasped, and/or murmured approximately 10 seconds before anything of interest occurred. It was like I was sitting in a room filled with mentally distinguished mentally-challenged clairvoyants.

I'm kinda shocked. They were so hyped for the movie, as were many folks - perhaps due to the ending. You'd think the thrill of a midnight showing would inflate your opinion on a movie, only for it to deflate a few hours later; I thought the last Star Wars was fuck awesome after seeing it at midnight. But shit, they said they walked out utterly disappointed, as were many of the older people/teens in the audience.

I was disappointed to an extent, but overall I thought that the rest of the movie was good enough to make up for it.  Yes, there were pointless changes.  But it didn't make me want to fall asleep.  It kept me interested.  And the Inferi scene was exactly how I pictured it in my mind.

Ouch

You're brothers also hated OoTP.  Which was, uh, good.

Just a bunch of people trolling in here.  Movie is good.  I honestly don't understand people's conmplaints.  They're complaining just to complain.
