Mission: Impossible III is a great action TV show pretending to be a film. Alias got horrendous. Abrams has a talent for making things convoluted and incoherent. May I say more about his awful Superman script? Abrams might be good for an espionage show or two, but this is Trek, which Roddenberry made famous by simplifying themes in a fantastic setting. Abrams is just going to make it a convoluted mess. He isn't a proven guy at all, especially in terms of a director.
Then, we come to the biggest obstacle. William Shatner is Kirk. Leonard Nimoy is Spock. Mind you, this is for anyone over the age of 21. The point is, I highly doubt that people are going to flock to the movies to see the Matt Damon, Sylar from Heroes and Tom Cruise Star Trek reimagining spectacular. It's got huge flop written all over it.
Paramount was foolish to rush back into Trek and even more foolish to try and reinvent the wheel, when the wheel is still too fresh. Fuck, I paid to see Undiscovered Country in theatres and I'm not old at all.
