Matt Damon On Star Trek: If the script is good, I'll do it
« on: December 11, 2006, 10:17:08 AM »
Sounds like the Matt Damon rumor was real. J.J. Abrams with two of his Lost/Alias writers are working on the script right now. Matt Damon is willing to do it if he ok's the script.

Seems like Damon as Kirk is much more likely than previously thought.

You don't know how many times I have watched Star Trek and thought, "This needs more Matt Damon"

JJ Abrams is a decent enough writer to pull this off, so no worries. 8)

There is also been some talk on Spock lately. The guy who plays Sylar on Heroes said he has been talking to co-star Greg Grunberg(who is confirmed to be in the new 'Trek) about getting a audition for Spock. Oddly he kind of does look like a young Nimoy. It doesn't hurt when J.J. Abrams is openly a huge fan of Heroes.

Damon was in The Brothers Grimm and Stuck on You recently. I think his definition of good isn't THAT high. ;)

I really don't know. J.J. Abrams IS good. First two seasons of Alias(his two seasons) were great and I feel MI 3 was a great action film.

And who knows the power of nostalgia on this. We know this film will have the classic look. Short skirts & go-go boots style.

Mission: Impossible III is a great action TV show pretending to be a film.  Alias got horrendous.  Abrams has a talent for making things convoluted and incoherent.  May I say more about his awful Superman script?  Abrams might be good for an espionage show or two, but this is Trek, which Roddenberry made famous by simplifying themes in a fantastic setting.  Abrams is just going to make it a convoluted mess.  He isn't a proven guy at all, especially in terms of a director.

Then, we come to the biggest obstacle.  William Shatner is Kirk.  Leonard Nimoy is Spock.  Mind you, this is for anyone over the age of 21.  The point is, I highly doubt that people are going to flock to the movies to see the Matt Damon, Sylar from Heroes and Tom Cruise Star Trek reimagining spectacular.  It's got huge flop written all over it.

Paramount was foolish to rush back into Trek and even more foolish to try and reinvent the wheel, when the wheel is still too fresh.  Fuck, I paid to see Undiscovered Country in theatres and I'm not old at all.

I feel that way now as well but I'll wait till I see the film. Pre-OHMSS Connery WAS Bond. And Abrams has said he sees Kirk as being Bond in that he should be the star of all things star trek and be recast when the time is right.

Who gives a flying fuck what Abrams thinks.  Kirk and Spock are icons, and have been portrayed by the same two actors for a lot, lot longer than Connery as Bond.  I'm glad Abrams awful spin can take advantage of you as a Bond fan, but I'm not that stupid.

Stargate has been better than Star Trek for years n years. Amen.

I represent what Paramount wants, but they will not get - the casual Trek fan that's alienated by the hardcore Trek nerd crap.  I'm the guy that owns Wrath of Khan and First Contact, and probably didn't see the last two films.  I'm the guy that watch the original series in re-runs, and casually watched The Next Generation, but was offput by all the nerdy political crap with other spinoffs.  I don't want to keep track of a billion different alien races, continuously at war with each other, and all that bullcrap.  I like Kirk and Nimoy saving whales.

Say what you want about Trek, but Stargate is some of the most mediocre science fiction on television.  It's not bad, nor is it good.  It's as about as safe as low budget sci-fi can get.

Was it Season 1 and 2? Those were Abrams seasons. Abrams sway over lost is decreasing as well. He is spending most of his time on Trek now.

I hated MI:III. You are shooting in scope, JJ, no need to be 2 inches from everyones face like when you are shooting a TV show. I have rarely seen the 2.35:1 ratio used more poorly.

Correction, those were the seasons he was hands-on in writing, but he always served as producer on the show.  Not only that, he started the narrative disaster that turned into Season 3, regardless if he didn't personally write it.  He's did the same thing with Lost.  It'll be an epic disaster in a season or two once everyone realizes that nobody knows what's going on.

Wow stfu. King Kong was a good film and didn't suck by any stretch of the imagination.

MI:I is a very good, well balanced movie. There are only three big action scenes in the entire movie, which forced the rest of the movie to grab your attention with more than explosions and rock climbing (like MI:II). I haven't seen MI:III but I've heard many good things about it

King Kong WAS a great movie. If you like watching PJ jerk off to his own greatness for 3 hours.

Willco: its because he tried to make a fun, 90 minute B-flick into a serious, 180 minute drama. To say he failed is like saying Stalin might have killed some people.

Not really, but - again - calling out someone because he enjoyed a film for what it is when the general concensus of those who actually saw it (albeit a catch twenty-two, since it did only $60 million worldwide) concurs, is hardly a barometer for taste.

I mean, at least I don't think J.J. Abrams NBC Original Movie of the Week, Mission: Impossible III is better than DePalma's original.  Nor did I pay to see Miami Vice in theaters (oh, sick burn!).
