interesting.

I thought WSR would be much much higher, considering everyone bought their Wiis for the first one.  but RE5 360 is holding on to the crown for this year so far

and lowell at the hardware.  Wiis are everywhere now and sales have plummeted.  Fad over?

was there news that infamous got a boost in sales?

the only thing I noticed before these numbers was the story that Wii Sports Resort sold 500k, and I guess Sega saying The Conduit sold alright enough for them.

and I'm a bit confused, is that supposed to be bad for the Wii? it's still outselling both PS3 and 360 combined with hardware from 2001

The PS3 has tapped out its market potential.  Nine straight months of year over year decreases.

Whether the Slim PS3 is coming out or whether it will accompany a price drop, it would seem pretty unlikely that PS3 sales would explode for no reason.  Killzone 2, SCE's seven figure savior, has flatlined.  LittleBigPlanet is pretty much forgotten.  The only three hail mary longshots that Sony has is God of War 3 (never moved huge numbers of systems in the past), Gran Turismo 5, and the chance of a Slim PS3 being somehow so aesthetically pleasing that people who had no urge to get a PS3 did because of a few cosmetic changes to the hardware.

At this point, it seems like a better idea for Sony to just let the PS3 limp along.  PSP, despite it being Pirate Central, still puts up some good hardware numbers.  We'll see how the PSP Go unfolds, as it seems to be Sony's greatest troll to the industry.

one thing they need to do is open up the floodgates on their back catalog on psn and keep the prices cheap

they're obviously still bleeding so i don't really see a price cut coming soon, but if they could get that rumored software PS2 BC at least partially running for some of their catalog, and say include a NEWER PS3 exclusive, extra controller, and a download voucher for a handful of PSN/PS1/PS2 games, the $399 might not look like such of a big wallet hit

Is it the crisis or does this gen seem over sales wise? I thought I heard talk that this gen was supposed to last longer etc., but judging by these sales numbers everything is in decline. Maybe its just the shitty 2009 games line up?

Well the summer is usually a pretty slow time for games in general... I'm sure the crisis doesn't help matters any. Mainly looks like the Wii is slowing down and is in need of a price drop.

Here's July 2007 for instance:

Wii-425,000
360-170,000
PS3-159,000
PS2-222,000
DS-405,000
PSP-214,000
GBA-87,000

I don't see why PS3 can't put up some solid numbers at $299.

What's the verdict on LBP? Anyone still turn it on? Lots of new worthwhile levels, or is it pretty much tapped out?

Huh? It's summer, the numbers are always rough.

Games are selling, publishers are making money. It's not a dark and gloomy picture. For the games retail industry, this has been one of the greatest periods of sustained growth since the industry's inception.

lol, this gen is not over.  there are 2 pieces of plastic coming out in the next few months, one with the word "Halo" printed on it, the other with "Call of Duty" on it.  They will both sell ridiculously well and give a boost to system sales.

there is a goty edition coming that has all dlc on the blu-ray.  I've played it a few times over the summer local co-op and I still enjoy it.  No stellar levels, just a lot of good ones.  Last time it got a boost in quality levels was when they introduced the new gameplay mechanic with the Metal Gear DLC.  People thought they would do that regularly, but so far, that has been the only one.

you can search by most played and highest rated levels now, but the best way to find good levels is still to experiment.  They still haven't found a good solution to that and it's still mostly the youtube model, except it doesn't really work as well since it's not as simple as clicking a link and watching a two minute video.  The Modnation kart racer game is going to have the same problem.

If you look at the sales data from the beginning of the generation until now, I think you'll find that there was a nice lil peak around late 07 early 08.  The industry is down this year compared to last year.  Put your fingers in your ears if you want but I don't see how anyone looking at the sales data could say we're in the salad days.

As for publishers making money, which ones?  From the Q1 results we saw, Nintendo and Activision are making money.  Virtually everyone else that publicly reports their information posted a pretty large loss this quarter.

You're talking to a recent DM-in-training that has run multiple stores for two videogame retailers over the past five years.  The current console generation has been fantastic for retailers.  Yes, there is some contraction in growth that has coincided with the recession, but never before has the industry had this much sales growth. Part of it is Nintendo tapping into a market and part of it is Microsoft figuring out how to properly market milk the hardcore.

This belief that its been an awful time for everyone involved is pretty narrow.

I never said there was going to be a ten year cycle.  That concept is stupid.

I was more or less responding to Kosma and similar criticism of the current console generation in terms of sales performance.

Predicting the peak of this console generation is also kind of silly.  Wait, you're telling me there is a sales decline that coincides with an economic recession?  That's totally crazy!

Sony really needs to drop the price on the ps3. Whether the ps3 slim is real or not, they need to do it before year's end.

If not, they're dumb.

They also need to re-implement bc.

I know so many people who want ps3s, but don't want to get one because of:

1. the price
2. no bc, they still play their ps2s regularly and there's plenty of reason to upgrade towards a bc ps3. There's little benefit to playing a ps2 on an hdtv seeing as you can't upscale with a ps2, ps2's require memory cards and there's the whole better performance thing too. It's just convenient hooking up a wii, ps3 and 360 rather than all that including a ps2.

I think that could go a long way with the hardcore gamers out there that are still on the fence with this gen and still play their ps2.

The fact that Sony still hasn't released ps2 software emulation similarly to how they handled bc in the 80 gig models just makes absolute zero sense to me. They have the tech, why can't they put it in a patch?

I'm a huge Sony fan and they are doing absolutely everything in their power for things to NOT work out for them.

Price drop would be bad unless Sony is content on burning through another billion dollars on losses on what will only amount to marginal increases of sales.

Not sure why a price drop would result in a large explosion of sales anyway.  Having the name "PlayStation" on the system is no longer good enough.

I don't really play games much these days, or have the initiative to play them.

If I play a game it'll be maybe thirty minutes or an hour. The only game this summer that has hooked me in any way is WoW, and I don't even play that all that often.

I don't want any of those games. I'd rather do something else.

Low numbers are expected.  Unlike other escapist outlets, games cost too damn much and are in no way "recession-proof".

WSR fails to move consoles in Japan or America.  Nintendo is avoiding a pricecut by showcasing software, but its all sequels.  There's already been a mario, wii sports, and wii fit game.  They bought in folks.  A sequel isn't going to attract previously disinterested buyers.  Those who think MW2 or ODST are going to move consoles for Microsoft have this faulty reasoning too.

I really think this industry could explode to previously unimaginable levels of success if they could get costs under control and release games at impulse prices. Iphone comes to mind.

Well, not really. It's mostly an issue of value. I don't see the point in spending 60 dollars (which is overpriced to begin with) on a game when, for the last few months, I get tired of playing games within just a few minutes. I'll turn it on and turn it off and be all,"What is the point of this?" and then go watch a movie or read a book or something.

The game will likely end up being disappointing or average anyways, so who cares.

Really can't explain it. I love games, so I don't know why I don't feel like playing them.

I think the game that made me feel like this was Metal Gear Solid 4. I played that in April, and like, aside from the Jak trilogy which I scooped up soon after, and WoW, I haven't really been enthusiastic towards games at all. MGS4 sucked balls.

Sony responds to the NPD,but nothing from NPD is mentioned in PR :lol

About NPD
I don't see this as a bad month, except for Playstation family, but that is business as usual.Sales during summer months were always "low"-200k-ish,spiked by occasional blockbuster software releases.

Nintendo situation shows that price is just one of many things that influence console sales, last gen is a true example of it.
If Wii Fit was at 400k,Wii would be at 500k...
Nintendo problem is that genius things(sales wise) like Wii Fit appear once in 10 years and third party support is mostly very bad, people are noticing things like, where is Red Faction,Saints Row,GTA,Batman,Assassins Creed,etc,etc... Wii...By people i mean people that walk into game stores.
I mean even PSP is getting Ass Creed,GTA,etc...something and Wii the "market leader" is getting nothing.
