I'm just thankful it won't drive Wii sales, although I'm pretty sure the 360 will dominate the West, albeit not to PS2 levels. I think console gaming is simply dying in Japan, but Japanese devs will support Western markets, Capcom-style.

Besides, TVC, didn't you hate the the PSP? Despite my love for it, it's clear Sony bungled it. I kinda blame Sony for all this -- the PS3's launch and pricing killed its chances early, and the gross mishandling of the PSP put the DS on top.

There are 12 million DS's on the market in Japan. 12 million. By the time this game comes out, it could be at 15 million, and by the end of 2007 it will no doubt be at 20 million. This game will cost SE maybe $5 million to make assuming they pull a lot of crazy stops, and make them MILLIONS.

It's the right decision strictly from a business decision. This is a quick cash in before they start getting hit by multi million next gen development costs.

Certainly there's no way for me to argue that that presentation wise the DS is a better fit. A step back is one way to look at this: a step in a new direction is another valid way to look at this.

SE is taking the series back to its roots, and I see nothing wrong with this. There is no indication that this will be their trend for all DQ games. Like I said, it's very logical that DQ10 will appear on the Wii in a couple of years. And in that case, graphics certainly won't be an issue considering the Wii will allow graphics twice as good, if not more, as those in DQVIII; especially if the game features good art, which is a standard of the series anyway.

This is not going to end the world, nor does it mean all DQ games will be on the DS. People are severely over-reacting to this. We simply cannot expect the industry to continue going in the direction of multi million dollar games. It's not going to be good for anyone if in 2010 the Xbox 720 is $800 and games are $80. SE is spending a shit ton on FFXIII, and with that in mind it's not shocking that they'd cash in with DQIX before moving that series into the next gen.

I wouldn't be suprised if Nintendo also played a role in this. Why do I have a feeling there will be little to no royalty fees on this game..?

I doubt it.  I think they'll do at least 2 DS games.  Since they are shit easy to make they can crank them out.  No system will be outselling the DS for the next 2 years if things continue along this path.

And I don't think Presentation relies on technology.  Technology can help, it can help many things, but it tends to be a crutch. Playing PS4 and seeing the story presentation they use, I find I am rather liking it.  It's more interesting than the early FMV presentations that followed it in the CD era.

Sony is dead in Japan, period. In the US they're in for the fight of their lives against the Xbox 360, especially when casuals see Halo 3, GTA, and Madden all on the shelf for it come November 2007.

With the overworld...don't you think it would be possible to do something like that on the DS, but which caters to the DS' strengths? In terms of gameplay and story - the most important aspects of an RPG - there are no problems with this being on the DS. Wouldn't you agree?

You know I lost my interest in Nintendo with the Zelda fiasco, so I'm not a cheerleader for them. But what we are witnessing now is the biggest gaming coop since 1995. No one expected this. Nintendo's third pillar strategy didn't begin as a joke or something: they felt the DS would compliment a new, more updated Game Boy product (GB Next). When the DS blew up they scrapped that idea (it was most likely just in R&D stages) and decided to focus on the DS. Then they decided to make it a trojan horse for the Wii in a way the GBA never was for the Gamecube. We'll see if it works in a few days when Pokemon Battle Revolution comes out, but I have a feeling it'll be a massive success.
