Amazing interview with Questlove from The Roots

Quote
The ideology of what I considered "real" hip-hop died at the 1995 Source Awards. I was literally at its funeral-- I sat three rows behind Nas. In the audience, the Bad Boy camp was on the far right, all the West Coast and the Southern rappers were in the middle, and on the far left were all the New York underground rappers like Wu-Tang, Mobb Deep, Nas, Busta Rhymes, and us. That was the day when Suge called out Puffy, and there were fights in the audience. I felt like a bomb was going to detonate.

Nas' body language that day told the whole story of where we were about to go. The more he got ignored for Illmatic, I literally saw his body melt in his seat. Almost like he was ashamed. He just looked so defeated. I was like, "Yo, he's not gonna be the same after this shit." None of us were the same after that day. I feel like the true underground lost its oxygen that night.

I've got Danny Brown's album, only listened to a couple tracks. Sounds good so far. Dude is crazy

in other Detroit hip hop related news, Appolo Brown and Hassan Mackey's colab album dropped a month or so ago

Haven't listened in awhile, but on my first impression I was kind of disappointed. Production wise is very good; Apollo Brown chops samples better than just about anyone. I love how many songs start out playing the sample before the beat kicks in, so you can hear which parts he flipped. That being said, I Mackey's rapping is kind of staggered. I'll give it another listen

Oh man, someone needed to say it. The juxtaposition between Wayne fans shitting on the album and it being on pace to sell nearly 1 million copies in a week tells you everything you need to know about it. This album is no different than anything Wayne has done over the last 4 or so years: a collection of club tracks, gangsta stuff, and love songs for the single ladyz and fellas out there - hell it's not even a white thing (well, outside of How To Love). I've never been a Wayne fan but I thought Carter III was cohesive and featured some nice attempts at "things other than club/lady songs." It was like a typical Jay-Z album with just enough there to make it average but hard to completely dismiss.

My problem with Wayne has always been he's just not interesting and has nothing interesting to say, despite all that charisma. And while he has a rapid fire flow, lyrically he just has nothing. I like some imagination in my gangsta/aggressive/etc. Part of the reason I love Raekwon and Ghost is because they can make the same song tons of times, but each one is so vivid, sometimes hilarious, or imaginative that it's hard not to like. But Wayne just has the same blueprint for everything.

I pretty much agree with this too yo

So we gon act like J Cole didn't release an album?

Pretty solid debut. There are a couple pop rap experiments that don't work, but overall it's a good album. I'm very impressed that he didn't sell out, didn't turn his back on his fans, etc. BoB, Wiz, and a host of other debut albums over the last couple years were basically pop records that didn't sound anything like the mixtapes that got those artists signed in the first place. And without a hit single he outsold them all in the first week with 217k. Grats Cole :bow

My only complaints focus on some rather corny lines in various songs, and his production. He's a solid producer imo but doesn't do drums well...at all.

Check out their first album, I wanna hear your impressions. It's basically 3 battle rappers and one emo rapper duking it out over average production; next album should have way better production now that they're on Shady. Obviously they can all rap:

But I thought it was pretty average, and they were trying to hard which led to some corny similes and lines. I was accused of being a hater when that album came out lol. SOHH was hilarious around that time

I haven't listen to Tip's solo work yet. But I'd imagine it would be a little hard to release good solo albums years after your best work with a group as great as Tribe, no?

definitely. to me at let, phife balanced out tip's vocals. the solo albums were harder to get through for me.

Pioneering college hip hop radio jocks Stretch Armstrong and Bobbito sit down on the couch for an interview with rap scholar Chairman Jefferson Mao, touching down on the beauty of unprofessional radio and the joy of igniting careers for countless artists like Jay Z, Nas, and Mobb Deep. The interview took place during the Red Bull Music Academy's 'New York City To the SF Bay' lecture series in San Francisco. Oh yeah, and the whole thing is also pretty damn funny.

I'm searching a song but I only remember it very vaguely. Some stuff I remember:

- I heard it the first time in the summer of 2003. I saw the video for it and it looked like it was shot sometime between 1998 and 2003.
- Primo like Beat, could be by him
- Rapper at one point says "I love HipHop" in a very heartfelt true way. Maybe he continues with "more then everything" but I'm not sure about that.
- Name of the rapper might begin with an "a" and be a short name, but I'm not sure.

So um, anybody have an idea? I know the hints could apply to hundreds of tracks, but maybe they will spark a light with someone.

It was great. They ended up selling out completely. Nakim brought Smoke DZA for a remix during his last song and that's when all the smoking began, as expected. A lot of people weren't ready for Flatbush Zombies. It seemed like half the crowd completely loved them while the other half were disgusted or confused by them. :lol I don't know if you've ever heard of Erick Arc Elliott, but he performed a few songs with them also. He's the one who produced Thug Waffle.

I've already seen Kris perform before so I knew what to expect. Crowd loved him, then again a lot of his people were there and the crowd was mainly from BK.

When Schoolboy Q finally came out, he was wearing a Mets Jersey and fitted cap. He said he tried to find a Lin Jersey, but it was sold out all over NYC and he thought we didn't fuck with Carmelo anymore so he didn't get his. :lol He killed his set though. He came into the crowd at one point and everyone went crazy. Me and my friends got separated in seconds. He also brought out Ab-Soul for one of their songs together and then let him perform something off his album alone. If he comes back to NYC at a bigger venue, I'm definitely going again. Same goes for Kendrick.

You might not know all the names that I mentioned, but I put them in anyway because I figured that PD and others would. :P

I'm intrigued. IMO rap super groups typically fail because most of the members rap the same; Slaughterhouse is basically 3 punch line rappers plus Joe Budden. With these guys though, the only punchline rapper is Saigon I guess, although that's debatable; some might argue he's not really that type of rapper.

and speaking of Bronsonlini
