imo so far

Mos Def - The Estatic
P.O.S. - Never Better
Tanya Morgan - Brooklynati
Meth and Red - Blackout 2
DOOM - Born Like This

Probably forgetting something but yea, so far I haven't really been blown away by anything. Anticipating OB4CLII although just about everything I've heard from it is meh. When will these clowns realize part of their popularity is thanks to RZA? Sure he's fallen off, but I'd rather have him on the album than Marley Marl or Pete Rock (in 2009)

forgot to include the Champer Music album. Wasn't really into it on the first listens but I've given it another chance and like it more. I usually like seeing live instrumentation in hip hop, but at times it sounds too "clean" for the Wu Tang sound. Other times it works perfectly on the album

Blueprint III and Til the Casket Drops are probably the only new hip-hop albums I will be listening to for the rest of the year.

spoiler (click to show/hide)
And maybe the new Birdman album.

Why was Raekwon dropped from Aftermath? Was it part of the whole Busta Rhymes deal?

True, Dr. Dre needs to get his label together. Busta Rhymes had a good thing going with Aftermath, but it sounds like Jimmy Iovine is a dick. (Or Busta Rhymes was just being the hotheaded jackass that he always is and lost his best deal ever because of it.)

Listening now. Intro is pretty good

second song (Thank You) sounds like Late Registration era Kanya. Beat has some annoying as fuck background vocals. third verse is fuck awesome

D.O.A: everyone has heard this. like the beat/sample but the concept is kinda laughable when you realize he was gonna use auto-tune on the album until he realized he couldn't do it well

Run This Town: second single. Rhianna's voice is fucking grating.

it feels like a victory lap, instead of recalling the angry, cocksure Jay-Z of Blueprint that still felt like he had something to prove. Luckily, Jay-Z's phoned-in records still have better beats than anything out of the Nas camp this past decade. So I'm disappointed to be sure, but at least I can bob my head to it.

I like Young Forever, because only Jay-Z would sample that song.

Jay-Z just might be the most insecure man in hip hop. For all his achievements and world breaking sales he still can't do much better than tell us how good he is, and why we should appreciate him. BP3 is just another mainstream rap n bullshit release from Jay. But he's just traded in the soul loops for electronic beats.

If someone has to constantly tell you that they're smart, most likely they aren't. Same applies to Jay and his constant GOAT boasting which seem to ring hollower with each release. Lyrically the album rarely rises above radio filler. The flow is often slower, mimicking the mannerisms of southern rappers. To make matters worse, he gets outshined at least twice on the album by a guest rapper.

Starts well enough with the first tracks; in fact the third verse of Thank You is one of Jay's best in a long time. Empire State of Mind sounds great, love the chorus. What We Talkin About is a good intro. I like the beat/sample for DOA despite the concept being kinda laughable (the album was going to have autotune until they realized it sounded shitty). Nearly everything else is radio filler.

The album is almost completely forgettable. I don't know who to shake my head at more though: Jay or Kanye. Best production ever? Mind blowing? No. Find me an electronic/techno beat that comes close to Flashing Lights. You can't. Hate is one of the worst songs I've heard this year. Already Home sounds kind of dated, plus Cudi's hook is atrocious; and I'm not being hyperbolic there, it's horrible.

Yea, that was a short ass verse. But dude killed it

I hope to god he doesn't become another ruined Roc rapper who drops one album then fizzles. If he's given free license to do what he wants to do (ie no forced club song) he could make something good. Hell, 9th Wonder if from North Carolina too right, maybe they can do some shit together.

BP3 is better than BP2.  That's about it.

I don't really like post retirement Jay-Z.  The whole thing seems weird to me and the fact that he is trying to replicate The Black Album and The Blueprint but falls short every time makes me wonder why he is even bothering other than to make quick cash (as if he doesn't have enough!) as most people will just buy his shit because he made it.

I listened to 1-4 and then stopped lol. +1 for the God-this-guy-is-boring camp. I hadn't heard any of his mixtapes and saw the GAF thread of HYPE HYPE HYPE so I tried to give it a shot. Someone (I think PD) said that his voice works well with his production, and I guess that's at least true. DOOM, for example, (in addition to his emotionless-ass voice) always sounds totally aimless to me, but Cudi is just really monotonous

Rap has produced great concept albums (Ready To Die, OB4CL, The Cool, etc)

Rap is also filled with people who don't realize ambition doesn't always work well in the genre if you aren't talented. I'm thinking of say Mos Def, who I think is great but his more experimental stuff is just bad; same with Kanye. You kinda want to tap him on the shoulder and say "dude you're talented, but not that talented..." Same with Cudi. Lyrically I'm not impressed, I don't like his singing, the production is meh...why do rappers thinking rapping over more electronic production=innovative awesomeness? Meh

??? Deltron 3030 is pretty widely accepted as one of the best rap albums. Add Cannibal Ox (and, by extension El-P) and Viktor Vaughn to the list of rappers that can work an electronica beat.
