Sgt. Pepper is not really "hippy".

I like it a lot - it's probably tied with The White Album as my second favorite Beatles album after Abbey Road.

Abbey Road is the one Beatles album I'm listening to that I think is worthy of all the praise. This is one of the best rock albums I've heard. The others have some good songs, but this is great from beginning to end.

I haven't listened to Let It Be yet.

I prefer late Beatles to early Beatles listening to these albums. Abbey Road, White Album, Rubber Soul...they have meaty, interesting lyrics; amazing instrument playing and are more interesting compositions all around. But the earlier albums are full of two minute long boring songs.

This is why I used to not really like Beatles. I didn't really have much exposure to late Beatles; I was constantly served early Beatles, which I find to be boring as shit.

Ok, more real talk: Sgt. Pepper is fantastic. I can't think of an album with a better opening six tracks. On Revolver I really felt like McCarthy's poppy songs were spotty and often average. Here he has some of the best, especially She's Leaving Home. Wow. Can't say I like Lovely Rita or Good Morning; they aren't bad, just meh.

I read up on the creation of the album and couldn't help but consider the innovations featured here that impact music - but especially hip hop for me. Sampling, and the creation of "aliases" - think Wu Tang. Interesting

I agree. Although I think Sgt. Pepper's is weaker than White Album and Abbey Road, it's definitely when the Beatles music actually starts to move away from disposable pop to actually good music.

Then again, Rubber Soul's not bad.

That version has the original '65 stereo mix. The remastered stereo discs use the superior 1987 George Martin remix.

Mono is something that audiophiles and purists jack off about, since The Beatles originally mixed their album in mono.

I think the new stereo mixes are pretty ace, and don't know why you'd want to listen to mono, unless you are a collector. Those who dabble in audio engineering might care, but do any of you ever know what stereo panning means?

From a purist's viewpoint, mono > stereo -- they were the "priority" mixes. I personally enjoy the stereo versions more for almost every single song apart from the few times the stereo mix is very badly done (specifically thinking of "Eleanor Rigby"). People say the mono versions are "punchier", I think they sound flat and lifeless by comparison. It's all personal preference.

The Mono are good. Don't let the lunacy of pedantic Beatles fans get in the way of enjoying them. That said, the cleaned up Stereo are also very good. If I was going to recommend either to a newbie (and the Mono were available stand-alone), I'd still advise to get the Stereo.

I like the Mono versions quite a bit, but if you aren't used to it (or can't abide the flat wall'o'sound) get the Stereo for sure. They're really quite good. Even the odd stereo separation of instruments and vocals on the first two albums isn't as jarring as I thought it was going to be; just different. They were smart to apply limiting to the Stereo versions. The slight increase in loudness doesn't interfere with the quality of the recordings at all. Sounds good, mayne.

None of this dithering holds true for the Beach Boy's Pet Sounds, though. Stereo all the way. The Mono version sounds like garbage in comparison, original or not.

But there are some songs where the separation of instruments is annoying at times, especially at the beginning of songs. But ultimately it's cool being able to clearly hear when various instruments are introduced into a song.

Now I'm on the White Album. First disk is utterly amazing, and after listening to it I was convinced this would end up being the best double album I've heard. Second disk is good, but definitely not as good. That being said this is definitely the best and most consistent double album I've heard. Especially the first disk holy shit

We likely didn't grow up in houses that didn't play the Beatles. In terms of music from that era, I grew up with the Temptations, Michael Jackson (Jackson 5), Billie Holiday and Diana Ross. I didn't grow up listening rock.

I'm not sure about PD but for me, it's not that I didn't know anything about them. I heard the occasional song. Everyone has heard Let it Be, Come Together, Yesterday, Hey Jude;etc. but I never listened to them seriously. My friend gave me a best of Beatles lp once and it was full of 2 minute long songs which didn't impress me very much, so I didn't bother listening to them.

However, the remasters are the perfect opportunity for someone who has never seriously listened to the Beatles to give them a fair try.

It is possible to never really hear the Beatles. Until I started to get into their catalogue six years, I never really heard most of their material (I was into pop and rap as a kid, then alternative rock, then classical). The Beatles music I did hear was usually background noise at a supermarket or something.
