Catching up on some of these trailers and this by the Gunpoint devs, so definitely interested.

https://store.steampowered.com/app/1139900/Ghostrunner/

limited time(?) demo available now

Controller is straight up busted in this demo. AI becomes braindead in it. Played with keyboard and mouse right after, the AI is functional there. But the controls are really awkward with the AI's bullets being able to move faster than I'm able to "spam" boost to dodge around and hit them.  :doge

Seems to be "platform, one-hit kill enemy unaware, platform, one-hit kill..."

It's fun, in that it reminds me of Mirror's Edge, but I do hope the combat is more engaging and they balance the guns or make the the default controls better than they are in the demo.

So I was resting in bed and scrolling through this thread watching all the videos for these indie games D3RANG3D always links for the last bunch of pages and looking up the interesting ones and man, so many of these indie games come out and...no one plays them. Lots of ones that came out in Feb, March have like 2-4 reviews total and some look pretty good! If you can't market to stand out or know someone you're fucked as an indie dev.

Like these two for example. The few reviews are really good, but probably gonna be lost in the shuffle:

https://store.steampowered.com/app/1143430/Shadow_Gangs/

https://store.steampowered.com/app/1267870/Xenogunner/

https://store.steampowered.com/app/1064460/Murder_House/

They also have another one coming out:

https://store.steampowered.com/app/896520/Stay_Out_of_the_House/

The thing is, these look like they could be cool throwback games. But when they show up from some developer with zero track record and there's dozens of mediocre indie games for each good ones it's sorta hmmm.

You can't say "Gosh, Steam should open the flood gates so my indie game can get on their store! #CurationSucks!" and then be surprised that a game that releases 10 minutes after yours sinks your "new release."

Downloading whole romsets as a kid taught me valuable lessons. A) most games are shit and B) the more choice you have, the more superficial your filtering criteria become. We can't deeply and thoroughly evaluate everything, so we simply don't.

The solution is obvious: kill prospective developers to improve the chances of your own project.

I use my game wishlists as bookmarks. I've had at least one game on my Steam list for a full decade, other games that have been discounted to $1 multiple times. It's still packed with games because I keep adding more that look mildly interesting. Ultimately, my time and money are both pretty finite, but adding a game to a wishlist takes very little time and no money, so...

i feel like there has to be some kind of crash in the next few years, right? there's just so sooo many games being released, yet even the biggest titles drop below $20 within a year of release. everywhere you turn there's hundreds of dirt-cheap great games that you've never played. at some point won't indie devs start feeling like it isn't worth it when the chance to be successful is so slim?

The indie boom ended years ago. The folks coming in now need to understand that Steam's "indie wave" is over. Even shit games are getting hot sales on Nintendo, but that's going to crash eventually. If you're making games to make money, you're doing it wrong at this point.

RaveofRavendale or rather Mike Rose has some interesting ideas on indie publishing and how to make it work like he does with his games like 'Not Tonight'.
The problem seems to be that most of the indies don't do any marketing and if they do marketing they go through the 'old' channels like IGN where they are either ignored or buried in new AAA releases.

If you have interest in the subject you should look up his GDC talks, he has done a few on the subject I believe.

Unrelated to that last post, but is there a way to buy games on steam without it showing up on your activity? And maybe the achievements and stuff not showing up on your activity.

Once in a while I read about a highly rated erotic/porn VN/indie game that I want to try but I have certain friends on my friendlist that could be awkward if they saw me playing something with a name like "big tiddy goth gf simulator"  :japancry

On your Steam profile, under Edit Profile, you can block people from seeing your games list and won't show you as being in-game. It's a blanket block, though, I don't think there's anyway to do it for individual games.

Basically they need an incognito mode for purchasing and achievements/activity.
You can just set to show as offline for when you're playing, but needs the above as well.

Good point.

Also I know if you activate a key on steam it doesn't show in your activity as purchasing it. Since none of the humble bundle stuff ever shows.

I already own those, on Origin.

I played both 1 and 2 (and Apex). Got to max rank (no prestige) and then deleted them. Apex I played for like five minutes, not for me at all.

So that goes back to: When is Battlefield 3 and 4 hitting? I'd like to buy those again and have them with my Bad Company install.

If you mean EA's rental service thing where you don't own the titles: Like hell am I doing that just to have those on my Steam list. Fuck that.

Again: Some of us don't care. Put your shit on Steam, let us install it through Steam. Let us update it through Steam.

Just like I haven't bought The Division 2 on Uplay because "lol exclusive," I'll rebuy Mirror's Edge: Catalyst, Battlefield 3/4, and Burnout Paradise just to have them under one client.

Hell, I'm sure someone will figure out a way to get the game to boot WITHOUT the Origin install eventually. :win
