Why are GTA trailers always much better then the game itself?

Lost and the Damned had shitty trailers but the game was great

Considering picking this up too.  If the game play has been improved over GTA4, and the storylines are better (with no friend bullshit), I'm game.

I dunno. I bought TLaD when it first came out, played a couple missions... Got a panicked phonecall from "Brian" asking to meet up near the clubhouse, about 4 seconds before arriving at the mission initiation point I got another call from Brian, he wanted to play darts.  :-\

Riding bikes is better tuned than in GTA4. Johnny is neat, but nothing special. I liked Nico, but it was the losers who surrounded him who bothered me. Johnny starts off with a great, antagonistic and dysfunctional relationship with the club boss, so that was already more interesting than GTA4.

I dunno. Do people get sick of Madden? Forza or Gran Turismo iterations? Final Fantasy?

There are genres where I try the gameplay, only get a few levels in, and find that's been enough for me. I may not even finish the game. It's enough to understand the gameplay and move on. But something about learning a virtual geography, and then being able to apply that knowledge to solving the missions is a huge kick for me. It could simply be a matter of GTA3 hitting so many of the right pleasure centers that I'm willing to follow its model around endlessly.

In the previous generation I played the R3 Missions (Ambulance, Vigilante, Firefighter) endlessly, gradually getting better at them. Even with GTA3's map limitations, I became accustomed to judging where target-locations were just from incremental movements on the mini-map based on my current location and heading, from which I could deduce the most efficient means of getting to the target. It was like a monkey jamming on the button that rewards it with fruit; I was hooked.

Even so, with the removal of the R3 gameplay and inclusion of Taxis as the main means of transportation in GTA4, I found that I was unable to muster the will to just drive around. They'd removed the gameplay I wanted and even introduced new gameplay which entirely changed the dynamic established in the previous generation. As I play through the DLC, this time around I'm trying to play the game they've provided instead of the one I was expecting.

Yes, every single piece of news on the topic has hammered this home: the DLC requires the original disc, but if you buy the two-pack of Ballad of Gay Tony/Lost and the Damned, it is completely standalone, playable without the original disc.

The part where it's unclear is if the standalone disc version's Achievements count as separate titles -- can players double-up on Achievements through both DLC and disc playthrough?

What about multiplayer? Can BoGT/TLatD disc players join multiplayer games with GTA4 players? If not, what about GTA4+DLC players?

Last night I tried playing multiplayer activated out of a TLatD savefile. My online character model had a HUGE number of new costumes, mostly biker themed. When I tried to join a Ranked Deathmatch game, historically the easiest game to find, there were -no- players. One guy joined and we sat there for a couple minutes waiting for new players. No go. So I think GTA4 multiplayer gets limited by whatever DLC is activated. I definitely want to roll back into whatever environment which allows connecting with the most players.

Yes dweeb

It's either GTA4 disk in the system, plus the downloaded episode ($20 each), or the Episodes of Liberty City disk, which has both Gay Tony and Lost and Damned on it.  The Episodes disk is $40, so if you haven't played GTA4 (or just not on the 360) and still want this, you can just pick up the episodes disk.  And Amazon is selling it for $35 + $5 credit.

Both Lost and Damned and Gay Tony have their own multiplayer modes/system.  Like, Lost and Damned multiplayer had the chopper vs chopper where it was helicopter vs motorcycle (haven't played it myself).  Gay Tony has base jumping :rock

Thanks for confirming. So if I want to play vanilla GTA4 multiplayer, how do I do that? In other games where the DLC limits play, there's usually a switch (UFC2009) or I just delete the DLC (Saints Row 2 Unkut Pack). Maybe I just load a GTA4 savegame and then jump into MP from there?

yeah, you just jump into the GTA4 mode and it will be back to GTA4 multiplayer.  The game acts as if each episode is its own entity rather than an add-on to the main game.

Lost and Damned alone was probably 8-12 hours (depending on if you want to rush through it or do side missions).  Assuming Gay Tony matches that, then yeah, rent it.

Looking forward to at least renting this as I didn't play TL&tD.  I'm guessing you can't just rip the content and then play with your GTA disc as if you'd downloaded it right? (a la Oblivion GOTY edition, etc.)

Sounds like swaggaz probably answered it.  Guess we'll find out for sure in a day or two.

It will be interesting to see how much the sales of Gay Tony are affected by the rental/gamefly/used market. With Lost and the Damned, most people assumed that the only way they'd ever play it was as DLC, until the disc double-pack was announced. This time people who want to play the new missions have an option to rent or buy it used.

It'll be flawed data, I know: at the very least, people who already bought the TLatD DLC can just buy Gay Tony for less than the price of the disc version.

The only real control improvement to Lost and Damned was making Motorcycles handle better (they used the logic that the main character was a biker, so he was naturally a better rider than Niko).  The motorcycles handled great in Lost and Damned, and it would take a lot for your to be thrown off.

As for mission structure, Lost and Damned had mid-mission checkpoints (every cutscene is basically a checkpoint now) meaning if you die during the action part of the mission, you don't need to replay the entire "drive to mission area" part. Gay Tony apparently lets you replay old mission too, which is nice.

Johnny's not gay, but there's plenty of angst. He's surly, antisocial, and dysfunctional. The club boss is pretty cool; he evokes the kind of fear that Deadwood's Al Swearengen did. There are no collection 'cheevs in TLatD. Ballad of Gay Tony looks like it may have, if the BASE jumping spots are not clearly designated.
