I'm definitely excited for this as I loved RE5.  Hopefully the new episodes are lengthy.

Yeah.  My bad.  I searched for Resident Evil 5 Gold, not Alternative edition.  Oh well.

Thanks for the merge, Lyte.

Quote
Capcom announced in its annual report that Biohazard 5 Alternative Edition [Resident Evil 5 Gold Edition] will no longer appear on Xbox 360 in Japan, only the PS3 version will be available. The reason is the low sales of 360 games in Japan. The game will still be available on Xbox 360 in US and Europe.

I was wondering why it wasn't being listed for sale by import shops.  This doesn't make a lick of sense-- they are still going to be selling a platinum hits version of the regular RE5 in Japan on the 18th for 4400 yen.  Why not throw in the DLC codes with it?

I think they're supposed to be about an hour each?  Probably like ACII DLC (40-60 mins) but the difference is that RE5 DLC might have replay value with coop and arcade action.

One thing that sucks is that the Mercenaries Reunion is just that- The Mercenaries.  They won't be upgrading the Versus Mode with the new characters and content.   :-\

Not hyped because I've realized DLC is always unsatisfying.  You wait 6 months and you get something that's lasts you one evening and then that's it.  The only exception are RPG expansions that are like 6-20 hours like Shivering Isles & Disgaea 3 & Fallout 3.

But I'll still play it and get my 2 hours of fun.  Maybe even play some coop if it's good and Mercs if it's improved.  Didn't play much RE5 mercs at all, didn't find it as fun as RE4 mercs (either that or standards have risen since).  Are there any gameplay changes to the new mercs mode?  Or is it just new maps/characters?

For a total of $14 you get two new scenarios (the first one will even have an RE1-style camera option), Mercs Return with eight new characters, and new skins for Chris and Sheva in the main game.  It's a good deal overall.  You can skip the costumes if you want and just get the episodes for $5 a pop.

Mercs Return just has new maps/enemy placements, IIRC.  It's a lot of fun and blows away the RE4 Mercs, especially in co-op.  I am disappointed that they aren't also including a "Versus Returns" with the new characters.

Perfect Dark is this week too?  Good week!

No, Perfect Dark is march.  but PD + the new RE5 DLCs = 1600 pts.

Is the new mercs mode packed in with the new DLC?   and I agree, mercs is awesome.  probably the best part of the game.

The Mercenaries Reunion has been a tad disappointing so far.  I played the first level and it was the same, save for the occasional ground crawler-thingy that usually shows up on the African Village stage.  The Mines level also seemed the same except for the addition of a big black dog running around.

I was hoping for completely different enemy mix-ups, and so far it is not delivering.  Also if you don't buy the costume packs, then you're going to be missing four characters in this mode.  You also cannot use the original Mercenaries characters.

They also changed up the music and the announcer (now it's Jill).

Lost In Nightmares has checkpoint areas, but nowhere to save.  You have to finish it in one sitting.

The first part of this scenario is pretty boring.

spoiler (click to show/hide)
You run around the mansion, which is similar to the RE1 mansion (again) only there are NO ENEMIES WHATSOEVER.  So you just get items and proceed to the basement.  It's not long, but still-- ZZZZZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzz.  What were they thinking?
[close]

Once you get past that part, things get better.  You'll face a new enemy type plus a familiar "friend."  I died at one part with two of the new enemies (didn't even realize they could come at you in pairs!), and decided to stop, only to find out that the checkpoints don't save your game.  Oh well; it's only supposed to take 1-2 hours to finish.

No item transfers; it's all self-contained so you are stuck with the weapons they give you.  You start out with the pistol and get a shotgun, uzi, and rifle pretty quickly.  There's achievements, plus hidden score medals all over the place.

The chapters didn't come out together? wtf  I thought it was a pack for $14 for everything?

$14 total for everything.  The first DLC and costume packs are out now, and the second set comes out next month.  That's why I caved in and ordered Alternative Edition on PS3; it's got all the DLC stuff on the disc and I am too hyped up to wait for the second pack.   :lol :'(

They are self-contained episodes that have nothing to do with each other.  The only thing you are "missing" by not having both sets of DLC right now are all the characters playable in The Mercenaries Returns.

Finished Lost In Nightmares on normal in about an hour, got an A rank and unlocked Jill for use.  It definitely picked up after that boring enemy-devoid mansion run in the beginning, which if you run through doesn't really take much time at all.

After you finish the beginning part, you then go below the mansion.  This is where things really start to take the "survival horror" turn that many felt was missing from RE5.

spoiler (click to show/hide)
First you have the new enemy type lumbering around.  You take out a few of them and then the game really gets going: You are dumped into a huge sewer area filled with corridors, and have to kill the enemy without your weapons.  You do this by finding cranks and using them to rig up old ceiling traps, lure the big guys underneath, and make some Jill sandwiches.  This was pretty tense and harkened back to the older RE days.  I bet playing this part with the static camera makes things even crazier.  You can (thankfully) see the enemy position on your map, so it's not a chore finding them and luring them to where you need to go.
[close]

After that it's the Wesker fight right out of the cut scene from the main game.

What was interesting about this play through is that not everything was accessable-- there was a locked door in the mansion and an item socket in the (spoiler covered) area that I didn't make use of, so I wouldn't be surprised if there's more to do on the veteran or professional (needs to be unlocked) difficulty settings.  I'm going to play through it with Jill on veteran next and see what happens.

In fact, the first part is very much a condensed RE1 mansion run-through, and just when you're like "really?  All this shit AGAIN?"  It completely changes.

It's only about an hour long but works well for a couple of playthroughs.  I highly recommend playing it on veteran and then playing it again on professional--
spoiler (click to show/hide)
You will get a few enemies in the mansion part on those difficulties, making it a little better.
[close]

I just played 2P co-op on both difficulty settings and we were able to coordinate the sewer area pretty well.  When you play on professional, enemies don't show up on the map in that area, making it a whole lot more intense!   :lol  We fucked up on the Wesker fight though; was trying to go for the cheev where you hit him enough times.  I still need to destroy all the score stars, beat up Wesker, and get an S rank (we were so close until the Wesker fight, lol) before I'm completely finished with it.  We got good enough at LIM that we were just running right past all the enemies, getting the items/keys, and rushing to the exits.

If you play co-op with someone you don't know and they don't have a mic, quit playing...you need to communicate to get the best score/keep from dying in the sewers.

wasn't as good as i expected, you just fight one enemy where you basically run/shoot it in one area and in the next area you just lure it in some death trap with your bro.

still the mansion was full of RE1 fanservice and playing as hot brunette jill was worth it.

MCD, did you play on normal?  It's too easy on normal; veteran is better but pro is really where it's at.

The second set of DLC is more likr a new RE5 level, and has a shit-ton of enemies and new cut scenes. I think Capcom skimped on Lost In Nightmares because they didn't want to pay Wesker's voice actor again, lol.  Also that sewer area would make for a perfect Mercenaries level.

I hope Capcom makes RE6 a lot like LIN. When I ran out of ammo I was like Oh Shi. It heightens the tension and just makes the game a lot scarier.

In terms of atmosphere/play style:

LIN = RE1 fan service

DE = RE4 fan service (according to CVXFREAK)

So I think it depends on how much you like the two styles of play for how much you will enjoy this DLC.  I still need to play through LIN using the RE1-style camera.

I am making my way through Alternative Edition now.  Playing on too-easy Amateur and skipping and cut scenes/running past everything possible to do it quickly, although I am getting the BSAA medals as I go.  Up to 3-1 now.  Hope to have Desperate Escape playable by tonight!

Finished Desperate Escape on Normal in 43:55.  While it's shorter than Lost In Nightmares, it's a hell of a lot more action-packed; there are almost no lulls in the action and you will have Manjini coming at you left and right.  I died several times (and Josh did a few times too) as it got pretty challenging in some parts.  Can't wait to try it on Veteran and then Professional!

Although it doesn't have any real new enemies, it was a hell of a lot more satisfying to play through than Lost In Nightmares was, and also feels like the more replayable game of the two scenarios.

It also has new cut scenes and better production values than Lost In Nightmares.  The game does a good job in filling in the gaps of Josh and Jill's whereabouts before the end of the main RE5 campaign, plus answers the question of what the industrial area looks like around the tanker that we didn't get to see during Chris and Sheva's adventure.

The end of this campaign is completely insane.
spoiler (click to show/hide)
You are on a large rooftop area, with a small building and some other areas to run to/hide in, and you have to survive wave after wave of enemies, including chainsaw and gattling gun mini-bosses until a five minute timer runs out.

They're both worth it IMO.  Regarding the second DLC being like RE4, it does remind me of the later areas in the game with tons of military Ganados coming at you...I guess.  I'm not really getting that comparison after playing it.  Or it's like a Mercenaries stage on a bigger scale. But regardless, it's just balls to the wall action, and plenty of it.  Shit-ton of fun; easily the best level in RE5, in terms of action.

Gold is going to be $49.99.

RE5 new is $29.99...used is what, $19.99-$22.99?  So you could save a couple of bucks if you buy it used and the DLC.

-Versus is $5
-Costume Pack #1 is $2
-LiN is $5
-Costume Pack #2 is $2
-DE is $5

A lot of people don't care for Versus mode.  If you don't buy that, more money saved.  If you don't care about the costume packs, that's another $4 saved, although keep in mind that those four costumes also count as being four characters in The Mercenaries Reunion.

But if you don't think you're going to care about the Mercenaries stuff that much, then just get the vanilla RE5 and the two DLC episode packs.

Mr. Gundam, you also get The Mercenaries Reunion when you buy the DLC.  It's separate from the regular Mercenaries game.  Same levels, slightly remixed, with a different set of characters to use.

Mercenaries is probably the only thing I'm gonna do in RE5, lol.

So the GE had nothing that you can't just DLC anyways, correct? I'm probably just gonna go for the regular.

Ah, then I'd recommend you get the costume packs.  Fairy Tale Sheva OWNS.  I like Rebecca a lot too (she comes with Desperate Escape).

Yeah, Gold on 360 is just the original game with download tokens like demi said.  On PS3 you get all the content on the disc.

On PS3, I would.  It's nice having everything already on the disc; pop it in and go.  Just remember that if you don't have an RE5 save file, you're going to have to play through the entire game again to unlock the new stuff.

And on that note, now that I have RE5 on both systems...man, 360 wins again!  The PS3 version may have no screen-tearing, but it has noticeable frame rate drops (and a worse frame rate overall) and even freezes for a split second (on occasion) when you snipe enemies in areas where there's a lot of characters on-screen.
