Hannibal is a beautifully shot, well-acted show which is otherwise pretty average. That's my judgement after the first four episodes. Hopefully it curves up a little more.

I'm in Season Five of 30 Rock now. I really like this show. Alec Baldwin is consistently flawless. I enjoy how the characters have become more nuanced, and less ... lovable? Everyone has problems; Liz and Pete used to be poster children for liberal creative professionals. Now they're both occasionally horrid people.

Just barely started BBC's In the Flesh, which is a drama about recovering zombies. So far, pretty interesting.

Watched the first episode of Crossing Lines yesterday, the European produced show that will bomb on NBC this summer. The show is about a detective squad made up of specialists from 'all over the Eurozone', that mysteriously contains two people from the United Kingdom. The squad is set up by the International Criminal Court (lol wat) to fight cross border crime, because apparently an expanded role for Europol would not be dumb enough for this show. William Fichtner and Donald Sutherland star in a cast otherwise devoid of talent, and I can only imagine were either paid huge sums or were blackmailed into appearing.

In the pilot they race across Europe to stop a serial killer, with all the generic cop show action and cliches you would imagine. There's really very little to say on it, if you've seen an episode of any procedural cop show, you've seen this. Except here it's set all over Europe. They do in the course of the pilot however manage to toss in some CSI-level stupidity by equipping the German 'tech specialist' with a device that records a holographic image of the crime scene, which is a major plot point that helps them solve the case and arrest the nervous guy from Ocean's Eleven. I'd tell everyone to not watch this, but given that it airs on NBC in the US, that's pretty much a foregone conclusion anyway.

I also just watched Under the Dome, the new CBS Horror/Mystery/Drama/Sci-Fi show based on the Stephen King novel where a giant dome suddenly appears over a small town in America closing them off from the outside world completely. The pilot did what it had to do, it set up the overall premise of the dome quite quickly, introduced the most important characters and started a few interesting/freaky story lines. Though nothing about this show is all that spectacular, it's perfectly watchable, and I could see myself getting into this if the overall plot progresses quickly enough.

watching the lavish BBC One production of The White Queen.  Beautifully filmed.  I have read the books by Phillipa Gregory but it seems to be Game of Thrones for housewives in tone.  Lots of intrigue, tragic romances, catty comments and beautiful men who stand around.  It's enjoyable to a point.  The court intrigue seems to be ramping up a bit which why I'm watching in the first place.

edit: holy shit.  just realized the tv show series is written by (not kidding) Emma Frost who, in the marvel universe, is The White Queen.

My pseudo wife is watching this, I caught about 2 seconds of a close up of a pair of nice looking tits in frilly cloth.

The BBC actually have a department which works on series that they can flog to the US, not surprising really, but still I was.

I enjoyed the novels but have heard the show sucks big time. Although some of the complaints focused on it looking "cheap" which is not a problem to me. Not everything can have a Game of Thrones type budget, and good acting/writing tends to trump budgets (see I, Claudius).

Danger 5 has been renewed for a second season, taking place in the 80s, with Hitler returning.

Pretty much no other sitcom on right now compares to the hilarity of Danger 5.

There was a free ep on iTunes for the start of the season. I watched it, and realized I'd probably seen all I'd needed to. Honestly, weirdly, it made me miss left-coast culture, but that was about it.

RIP Zach Stone.  Too beautiful for this world  :(

New episode of Gravity Falls though.  Last one aired in goddamn April.

Just saw the final Zach Stone episode.  It ends well.  It's a shame that those people lost their jobs in the cancellation, but it has a very satisfactory ending and overall story arc.  Well worth watching.  Seriously.

Splitsider has a good write up of Zach Stone and points out the show is available to watch on MTV's website
http://www.mtv.com/shows/zach_stone_is_gonna_be_famous/video.jhtml?filter=fulleps

http://splitsider.com/2013/07/zach-stone-is-gonna-be-famous-is-gonna-be-missed/

Quote
Despite its network and premise, Zach Stone felt like an old-fashioned sitcom in many ways. Each episode was more or less a reset, with a new, plot-specific opening title sequence (all variations on this incredibly catchy song from the pilot). The main relationships were TV staples: a will-they-or-won't-they subplot with this best friend Amy, the growing pains of friendship with his other best friend Greg, and household fights with his parents, who didn't quite understand his ambitions. The physical comedy was I Love Lucy-esque, each episode had a singular plot, and there weren't too many twists.

That traditionalism could have been a negative; maybe it was for some viewers. But more important than the show's plot was its nuanced, sometimes heart-breaking look at this delusional 18-year-old desperate for attention. His sweet relationship with Amy was endearing enough to win over his hired camera crew, who stuck around filming them even when they weren't asked to (or explicitly asked not to). At the show's finest, it captured Burnham's natural charisma and hinted at both why the people in Zach's life begrudgingly supported his wild endeavor, and how he just might manage to pull it off.

And even from the beginning, it was more clever than it may have appeared from the outside. "Hors d'oeuvres?" Zach reads from a funeral to-do list in the pilot episode. "Okay, that's French. I recognize that. But I don't speak French, so I went with the surefire bet of glitter." In a later episode, he helpfully packs a friend's bag – alphabetically: "In this bag, you've got your toothbrush, your toilet paper, your towels, your Terminator 2 DVD."

Under the Dome is on Amazon Instant which is cool. New episodes premiere every Friday.

Watched the first episode. Seems OK.

I read the book so the beginning is kinda pointless to me as it's all just setup setup setup. There are plenty of changes and I can already kinda see how they are using them to condense the story in places and change things around. Also I heard they are changing the "cause" of the Dome which is probably a good idea as it's pretty fucking stupid in the book.

30 Rock is one of my favorite shows. It becomes a bit formulaic, but it is still very clever. I'm up to s5 in it now.

I'm returning to Buffy the Vampire Slayer, s5, which I'd abandoned 4 eps in, previously. Enjoying it more this time around.

Also I just noticed that there's no good black characters besides maybe Rose but she's just a minor character. And every single good looking male has great deal of stubble. The exact amount you need to maintain every few days with an actual trimmer and not scissors.

So its like most television outside of the Wire then.

As someone mentioned Mr. Eko was a good character but then the dude wanted to leave the show. And Michael and Walt were just terribly written characters even though Harold Perrineau is a good actor.

Walt was a non factor.

I skipped ahead to season 7 of 30 Rock to catch the remaining five episodes on hulu before they're gone.  I thought hulu plus had a back catalog of NBC shows, and netflix won't get season 7 until october.  Anyway, jumping from season 4/5 to 7 is weird.  Jack/Alec lost weight, dyed his hair, and looks younger than in the older seasons.

I wanted more 30 Rock after season 6 finished, so I'm trying to watch Studio 60 onthething.

The pilot is basically the same as Newsroom's.  Well the other way around chronologically.  The second and third episodes have mock SNL sketches and they're terribly unfunny.  Obviously 30 Rock is a comedy while this is a drama, I think, but 30 Rock's TGS segments were all purposefully corny and then commented on how lazy the writers were or w/e.  In the second episode of Studio 30, they keep playing up this best ever cold open and I'm expecting it to cut to credits right as it's starting.  But then they show the sketch, it's bad, and everyone in the show is either dying from laughter or going "we did it guys, we're the best smartest people on TV!" It's bizarre.

I was someone who watched Studio 60 when it originally aired. Yeah it was a highly flawed show. Sorkin's lack of nuance was in full display on that series and yeah the sketch segments of the show were never funny. Comedians would rank all over the show when it originally aired on that subject.

I've been watching a bunch of TNG for the first time. Currently about halfway through season 4 - the first season was really rough to get through, season 2 was a little better (there was finally a great episode of the show in Measure of a Man), season 3 got me hooked with some truly fantastic stuff (obviously culminating in Best of Both Worlds). Season 4 has been good so far - lots of good stuff and only one awful episode (Troi loses her empathic abilities? Who the fuck cares). Overall it's been a great experience so far, looking forward to continuing through the franchise.
