Reading the article, I think this has a good chance of being saved. Netflix just said they want to focus more on sci-fi and this has baked-in fans.

Sadly I'm somewhat part of the problem. I didn't start watching the show until about 6 months ago and I haven't watched any of this season because I wanted to binge-watch the whole thing on the weekend when the season finished.

It's such a kick in the gut to potentially lose such a good show though. I hate the pacing of modern TV. This is the first show that got it right in so long. Slow as fuck. With an actual plotted out plotline where you just aren't randomly writing each season to give viewers random plotline jump scares.

I'll pray one of the streaming services will pick it up but I'm cynical enough and snobby enough to think its too smart and niche for these companies.

I also love the fact that syfy struggles to keep their most acclaimed shit on the air going back to bsg.

fuck syfy but thanks for letting it ride to season 3. The back half of this season is going to be fucking cray cray, and it’s honestly one of the best book to tv show adaptations I’ve ever seen. They’ve been nailing the feel and spirit of the books while bringing some more life to the non POV characters.

I don’t think amazon will be picking this up because they recently got the rights to The Three Body Problem, so I’m really praying Netflix does us a solid.

Kevin Can Wait (CBS)
Okay, so I wanted to talk about this because I saw a commercial for it and Leah Remini is now on it, so it looks like a weird King of Queens semi-sequel series.

But it's BETTER than that based on wikipedia.

Quote
The series began with James starring as a recently retired Nassau County, New York police officer and father of three, married to Donna (Erinn Hayes). Beginning with season two, the character of Donna has died, and the series' new female lead is Vanessa Cellucci (Leah Remini), Kevin's former rival on the force and now his partner at their new security company, Monkey Fist Security.

Quote
The replacement of Erinn Hayes with Leah Remini, and how the show handled Donna Gable's death, has been a source of controversy for the series.[88]. Criticism has been levied especially on the episodes "Civil Ceremony" and "Grief Thief". In the former, which served as the season premiere, criticism was placed on the brief mention of Donna's death, via a piece of mail, and a subsequent joke many found distasteful.[89] The later episode, the season's fifth episode, was panned for its plot that the characters use a single parents support group for getting out of work and their romantic life

Quote
Hayes (who has mostly remained silent over the firing so far) asked fans to not place blame on Remini.

Quote
Despite the controversy surround the revamp, the series' ratings have remained steady. As of December 1, 2017, the series was averaging 8.2 million viewers (with delayed viewing) in the season, competing against more established Top 20 series Dancing with the Stars and The Voice. The series also performs well in the much-coveted 18-49 demographic, ranking as the fifth-highest rated program on CBS in that category.

Also, it's on that dunno list, but rumor is it's renewed. So I'll give a recap that nobody wants. Lucifer's stretch run has been really strong with the heavier myth arc focus. And they let the show be emotionally quite brutal to characters that you don't think would be allowed from a show like this. Especially considering all the heaven/hell talk involved.

At the same time, the humor has really been fine tuned over the three seasons. I mean, this kind of thing is just incredible: Cain has an extensive rock collection. BRILLIANT. And everyone, especially the characters who don't know he's Cain, call it stupid and weird because they aren't like special or fancy rocks. And he gets extremely dejected by their criticism.

It's fun how it's embraced its altered comedic version of the comic's world while keeping the mythology components strong, without getting totally self-serious and losing the grounding like Gotham and becoming farcical nonsense. The fact that it's grown its ensemble, and the characters within it, does a lot for it to where you don't even need Lucifer or even Decker, in every scene or plot. (And it seems like they're ready to stop putting off "the relationship" and instead let the large set of troubles it'll start come.)

Syfy purchased The Expanse in a bid to rebuild its sci-fi image, and relies on live viewer counts as the key ratings metric: bloody ridiculous ::)
I hope Netflix pick it up like they did with Travellers after Showtime dropped it.

Once again Syfy have proven to be a pack of fucksticks :maf I'm surprised (but glad) 12 Monkeys managed to get a full run.

There really seems to be a lack of TV sci-fi that can balance substance and style. ST: Discovery was ok, but the pacing (tied to shortish season length) and writing did it no favours. To round it off: haven't seen Orville, Westworld is kinda losing me (though, they did do Persons of Interests so way too early to judge if lost cause), and I'm not interested in what ever live-action series Star Wars peddles out.

How slim are these chances of it living on given that it's apparently being shopped around?

The Expanse deserves much better than being spaced.

Your better off just hardening your heart already and just assuming its dead. The revival thing is always a super low roll of the dice kind of thing. It can't hurt to request it here on Netflix if you want to do something.

You and Seagram's have good taste so I'll give it a second shot. The only episode I saw was season 3 ep 20. My opinion at the time was "this is kind of a second rate Angie Tribeca."

it has the 'cadence' of a traditional sitcom, but there's a unique, very very goofy sense of humor to it. Also there's a certain 'heart' for lack of a better term that Goor and Schur shows have that's very endearing without being schmaltzy that's worked pretty well for this, Parks and Rec, and The Good Place imo

And don't listen to Scrubs-loving Wrath, who loves Scrubs, cuz he's a...

Looking grim for The Expanse.

The guy in charge of props confirmed on facebook that Netflix passed on picking it up due to their current/future roster of sci-fi (lost in space  :doge) and disinterest in resolving the tangled revenue streams (netflix has worldwide streaming rights, amazon has the first 2 seasons on prime in the US). Worse yet, the sets are going to be dismantled and/or sold to Star Trek Discovery (:rofl) if a buyer doesn't show up because Alcon isn't going to continue to pay the obscene costs for storage past the date they allotted for being renewed/finding a buyer. Which is this coming Monday.

After Monday, the need to rebuild the sets adds a significant cost to the amount needed to resurrect the show. Not to mention the people working on the show drifting off to find new work and feed their families. Prop guy is directing people to keep sending messages to Amazon as they have interest and have a shitty lineup, so use the 5 minutes you'd spend browsing reshitera to instead write a small message: https://studios.amazon.com/contact-us.

It's certainly by far the best show I've ever been watching while it was cancelled prematurely.

I mean Firefly was good, Journeyman was good, Farscape was good, etc.

But Expanse is better.

I find it odd that Game of Thrones got so big while Expanse did not. They're both long investment, twisting plots with politics and strange worlds. I think that sort  of approach is just a very rare success and a good percentage of success is luck. It's not like Expanse lacks for actors or has any obvious flaw. Maybe the one commercial flaw is the lack of big epic or controversial scenes. Some space battles to share and that's it.

I've yet to get around to Game of Thrones. I was initially surprised when Game of Thrones crossed over so much to casual people also but I think casual people like the shocking nature of it and the who's gonna die aspect of it every week. At least that's what they tell me. That isn't a shot at Game of Thrones. I'm sure its a really good show. More what I'm saying is that it feels like Game of Thrones maybe has more spectacle than Expanse although not having seen it, and not wanting to get spoiled, I'm guessing.

My kneejerk reaction is that slow talky sci-fi always struggles crossing over to casuals. That being said, Westworld is pretty slow and talky itself and seems to be popular although the theme isn't space stuff and its on a more prestigious channel like HBO and it has a gratuitous amount of sex and violence baked in to try to lure audience.

I think being on SyFy network also hurts. I don't think casual people take that channel very seriously or are aware of it.

Ultimately I think the slowness, being on SyFy, and the lack of promotion is what killed it. I was vaguely aware of the show when it first launched but honestly completely forgot about it until people started talking about it in this thread.

Also let me be clear that I adore the slowness of it. It's slowness done right. It's slow because its showing multiple sides and building out its story. But I understand how that's a turn off to casual people who always seem to complain anytime crazy shit isn't exploding on the screen every week.

Yes, spectacle is the right word. GoT has far more spectacle and The Expanse lacks that for the passing audience giving it a quick try.

Even Farscape had good spectacle. It provided an interesting and truly alien world, with sexuality and villains.  The Expanse's story is based around something truly alien, but its a very rare sci fi setting int hat it's a near future and singular solar. It doesn't push the world beyond what we already know until the unknown hits.

I felt more empathy when this random one off, one episode character died in expanse than anybody who has "died" in Westworld. When you create a believable world with real stakes and gravitas that happens. Death feels like Death because the world feels real. Once again not trying to diss Westworld. I like that show. But its why doing violence just for violence sakes is meaningless to me.

All the wailing and gnashing of teeth in this thread over The Expanse getting canceled has convinced me to use stupid Amazon Streaming again. I think I knew it existed but I hadn't seen much buzz about it til it got axed

I never watched the Expanse because it’s a Syfy product and those are universally ass.

Already have, the show is essentially take 2 of the books as the authors are directly involved with writing and directing, and it's benefiting greatly from having characterizations and events from future books sifted within the events happening on a solar-system wide level in place of novel-centric PoV pacing.

I can't wait for season 5, when everyone is suddenly 20 years older but still looks exactly the same.

will it be considered method acting for the cast if amazon doesn't pick up the show, but the project gets revived 20 years from now?

Nice ending for Barry. It gives them a pretty clear opening for S2.

Agents of Shield has been renewed, albeit with a shorter episode order. But I’ll take what I can get,I was sweating it with how late this renewal came

Will this be the last season, you think?
