It looks like it was made in rpg maker, right down to the menu style.

It looks cheap, hollow, and that it was made by interns or outsourced to a random company for five dollars a sprite.

Compare.

To

To

To

Since it's obvious main art inspiration is IV and V, let's go with that.

It is night and day to me. Even if the backgrounds have the detail of FFIV, for instance, we are literally talking about a game from 1992 stomping the shit out of spiritual successor graphically. Makes no sense.

Like. I can buy that you don't mind how it looks. But to say it looks like an snes rpg in hd makes me think you're legit blind, mate.

yep sorry but i see no difference between that ffd screenshot and the ff4 screenshot aside from resolution.
left side has a stationary cartoony monster, right side has short people with giant heads and eyes. looks the same.

That artstyle just doesnt work as well in high res if you dont up the detail/complexity I think.

Probably a big part, much like cinematic 24 fps.

But I think it is fair to say that objectively you need greater detail if you increase the resolution, you can see this in tv as well were shows need higher budgets now to look real then before on sdtv.

I do wonder how much of that is our generation's nostalgia for chunky pixels, though.  Which would a kid say looked better?  When he grows up, will he have our affection for low-res sprites?

I can tell you right now, my nieces and nephews think retro 8-bit style looks awful and don't understand the appeal.

I just like them more aesthetically. Not all the time, because games like Child of Light and Transistor look great. Like, the sprites are low res, but that's far from the point for me. The FFD sprites lack detail, have smooshy character designs that makes their body parts ooze into other body parts. There is no sense of unity or weight or definition in these characters. More than that, they are aesthetically bland. Notice how I didn't bring up the monster. Or the bgs. Because those are good. And it isn't nostalgia at all for me. I am judging from the visuals as they are today. The only reason I bring up the snes RPGs is to compare it to something a long time ago, to show much of a downgrade it is in terms of visuals.  It looks terrible to me and given that those sprites are what we look constantly while playing a 2d and they act as the window into the games world, I don't find it inconceivable at all that someone would find those sprites so bad they have trouble playing the game.

I normally scoff at "bad graphics." It typically does not bother me. There is usually at least something worth looking at or praising in a game worth playing visually. Even with games like Deadly Premonition, I like the character designs and art direction despite being low budget.

I'm not getting that with FFD. The sprites actually are detraction. I'll play it for five minutes and then always be reminded how UGLY the character I'm playing is, and how fucking boring everything is.

If those snes examples don't work for you, compare the game to Transistor or Child of Light. Still satisfied? Need an SE example? Theatrhythm looks adorable and has consistent art design. Still satisfied with FFD?

The fact it "looks like a high res snes game" doesn't excuse that it looks SHIT.

i didn't want to speak because honestly i can't exactly explain why, but i do agree with himuro, those FF dimensions character looks horrible! on a guts feeling i'd say the problem is that it feels like the color just don't mesh with each other very well... especialy the eyes of the character, it looks like someone drew the whole sprite and then was like "oh right! the eyes!" and added them later on

the smaller resolution version look uniform with rightly proportiened eyes while the HD blown looks like a mess of color with their huge eyes that looks like out of place

and i know "THE EYES LOOK WRONG" sound really spergy but i can't explain it in a better way :yeshrug

I'm quite satisfied with it, yes.  Given the scope, budget, and the display on the target platforms, I think it looks fine.  You bring up Child of Light, but that game's staff was about three times the size of FFD's and the budget likely an even higher multiple.  The art in FFD was done by two people.  In full.  They didn't have the time, manpower, or money to detail sprites on the level of CoL.

As for Theatrhythm, it has a cute look, but the number of unique assets required there pales in comparison to what FFD called for.  Half of the characters were already created for previous projects, on top of that.

I dunno, I think you're not appreciating or understanding both the circumstances of the game's development *and* the intended audience's preferences.  And I'm not sure what you'd have had Square do.  They put a legend on the character art duties.  Good sprite artists aren't exactly falling out of the sky in Japan these days, especially ones that do super-deformed stuff at HD resolutions.

I was going to make a snarky comment about Slime's young relatives never having tried to work out a tiny project budget before, but Oscar has beaten me to it with more grace and thought.

Anyone try that Gameloft Puzzle and Dragon copy game?

Btw King of the Course (EA) is a kind of ok game, but around hole 15 it got a bit hard, dunno if thats a paywall or if i was just playing crap. You need X amount of points to pass, in that hole its like 1750 for the lowest ranking. There are two 200 point fields to shoot into, 1 300 point and 1 500 point. So even to pass it with the lowest ranking you need to shoot into. The 300 5 times at least... Kind of assholy

Dungeon Plunder is awesome.

https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/dungeon-plunder/id588551503?mt=8

It's a roguelike, where if your character dies - that's it. You lose.

When you die, you get some stuff leftover from the previous character (or all chars? unsure). When I died, I got some gold, and an accessory I had found. It also let me start at Level 2 if I chose. But fuck that.

Battles are done like slot machines. You "hold" what symbols you want to keep, then re-roll.

World of Tanks on iOS is pretty fun , kind of hard to navigate on a small screen but the game's pace is alright for mobile, def feels better then FPS shooters.

Wonder how long it will be before I face too good tanks that I cant kill though, as happened on PC.

Tomorrow is Civ day though :drool

King (Candy Crush) made a new Solitaire game. It's damn good, but they have some bullshit F2P aspects attached to the game. Every 20 or so levels they put a timer on unlocking more levels. You can use in-game currency to unlock it, but I can see a point where that runs out and you are facing a 2-3+ day timer to play more new levels.

so i was looking at the recent android release when i found this game called castle doombad

now while i enjoy playing as basicaly dr.doom cousin i don't like tower defense game much, but this brought me to adult swim games! i remember adult swim coming with lots of cool stuff like house of dead ninja's so i checked their other games...

...and that's when i found monster ate my condo, basicaly you have a tower made up of blocks and you knock block from the tower to make match of 3 between blocks of the same color, making match 3 creates bronze block, 3 bronze block make a silver block, 3 silver block a gold block, and 3 gold block a diamond block, meanwhile in the background giant "monsters" rampage around, i use the air quotes because the monster include a giant pirate crab, a robot unicorn, a german yodeling cyclops and mostly important of all... a giant pug in a jar! it's all very garish and colorfull a-la dr.genki in saints row! the monster have all a color related to them and if you hit them with block that aren't of their color they get angry and when they get too angry they start trashing around which can knock the tower down causing the game to end, seeing the giant pug getting angry never get old, never! :lol

the game has objective and everytime you clear a set of objective new kind of powers or special blocks get added, which is a nice way to add progression and make an actual game to what otherwise would be a 2 minute time waster, there is a little strategy in the fact that each monster has a special power that you can activate by feeding them a metal block but the better quality of the block, the longer the special power last so there is a "which is better? the egg today or the chicken tomorrow?" conundrum
