i play games on easy or normal because i like to finish playing games
Nothing wrong with that. I generally play games on Normal also because my goal is to have fun rather than be frustrated. If you've played lots of diablo style games Torchlight is fairly easy at Normal from what I've heard. So fans of the genre I would advise to start on hard if they want a "normal" experience.

yeah, that's what they're saying on the torchlight forums

nothing wrong with wanting a deeper challenge, i'm just quick to throw my hands up and yell FUCK THIS GAME after repeating a level/scenario more than three or four times

and sometimes even on normal the balance goes nuts, like in COD: WaW where enemies threw grenades at you like pitching machines no matter what difficulty setting you chose

That's just bad game design then, Eel. I've mentioned that WAW is horrible a lot of times.

it's artificial lengthening of play time to cover the fact that that the SP campaigns are so short

COD4 did the same thing, and MW2 will probably do it too (as will MW3 next year, etc)

it's obvious both COD teams consider the SP to be filler tracks nowadays, just a little side bonus you get for buying the MP

I'm playing on Normal. Will go up to Hard for my next character now I know the interface and system.

The levels with the guy with the wand portal in town are fantastic.

Also :lol @ the first time

I hope this game runs on my fart box PC. My PC struggled a little with Fate, so I'm not too optimistic.

Awesome game.  I love how the screen shakes when you do a critical hit.  The load times are pretty bad on my dirty poor system though so I will wait and buy it when I upgrade.

How long is this game anyways?

IIRC there's 36 levels of the mine, and a level cap of 100

I'm playing on hard. About 5 hours in. Still a little bit too much like Fate for me.

I wish it was a bit deeper experience. Maybe my mind will change the further I go.

I bought the game and started a new game with a Mage character on HARD.  Soooooo much better now.

To get to floor 5 on normal with my fighter = 37 mins
To get to floor 5 on HARD with my mage = 1:30

Have to got a lot more slowly and use strategy.  Buffs/minions/spells/physical.  Much more fun.  Game is great.

Since I'm new to this genre, I have some questions of things I don't understand:

1.  Why does it seem that to do the optimum damage as a mage you need to be a melee mage?  That seems counterproductive to being a mage.  What I mean is that the 2 handed staffs are waaaay better than the 1 handed one.  Or maybe that's just because I got a rare 2-handed one early that deals like 108 damage and gives +4% damage to all magic element attacks.  My 1 handed staffs are like 30-50 attack.  So what I'm doing is equipping the 2 handed staff and shooting spells.

2.  This relates to 1; the tip says if you start seeing "glancing blow" a lot, you need to upgrade your weapon.  "upgrade"?  I thought the only thing you can do if your weapon is outdated is to get a new one or enchant your current one.  Is there a way to upgrade your weapon?  Because I'm getting that a lot on floor 5 now with my 2 handed sword I've been using since I was level 2 (level 7 now)

3.  This relates to 1:  I like the difficulty on hard mode ...but the first boss was CRAZY.  My spells were doing JACK SHIT damage.  I was doing more damage just standing in its face and smacking it with my 2 handed staff.  Now like I said in 1, this seems counterproductive to being a magic shooting mage....what's up with this?  Also I died :(  Luckily I just restarted from the stage entrance and lost some gold.

4.  Classes within Classes.  I see people saying they are playing a _____ ______, as in picking one of the 3 main classes and then going down one of the 3 sub-classes for skills.  Since I'm new to this genre and skill trees, why can't you just pick and choose your spells from all 3?  Like to say it more simply:  I don't understand why the spells are divided into 3 sub-classes and not just one giant pool?  So far at lvl.7 I've just been getting 1 of every spell that seems remotely useful (I think I have all of the lvl.5 and below ones besides Critical Damage+ & Melee Weapon proficiency)

5.  Any point in transmuting?  I haven't tried it yet.

6.  Is HARD balanced in comparison to normal.  Like since the enemies are harder do you get better loot or more gold?  Because I have very little money and my equip isn't that great.  My lvl.6 swordsman on normal mode is much more badass.

7.  I haven't gotten any fish or anything to give my pet.  Does that stuff not start until later in the game?

I think I had more questions, but I'll remember them next time I play.  I reaaaaaaaally like this game.  I want to get better at it.

Kinda figured out how mage attacking works.  Just seems random which is your best choice for atk between 1 handed staff shooting, 2 handed staff punching, atk spell.  Basically whatever has the higher stats is your best way to atk?  My atk spells are kind of useless at the moment compared to me standard no-mp-cost shooting.  I'm just using magic shield on right mouse button and shoot enemies with left.  Played for 3 hours tonight until I hit lvl.10, on floor 7 and have done all the sidequests available so far.  Good times.

respec mod :bow2

Didn't work when I tried it on the steam version?  I just created a /mod dir in the torchlight dir and put /respecmod there.  Hope mods will work on the steam version!

What is respec anyway ^^;

Stopped playing and saw it was 4AM, aaaahhhh this is bad.  Must sleep.

I beat the Overseer and am on floor 8 now, about to hit lvl.12.  Game is definitely a tough on Hard for a genre newbie like me using a weak DEF char like a mage.  But it's fun and I'm just barely surviving by my teeth.  I love summoning all kinds of allies and then doing my normal ass kicking + all the damage their doing & they distract everyone  :D

You might want to try the melee character as an alt if you get stuck as a mage.

Yea, that's what they mean by upgrade. Get a better one (with a better DPS).

I don't play mage classes, but I would think that using your pet as a meat shield (set his stance to AGGRESSIVE) while you sit back with magic would be the way to go. Just remember it's SHIFT + 1 to heal your pet with a potion. Keep him healed up.

Quote
5.  Any point in transmuting?  I haven't tried it yet.

It's not as important in the early levels as the gems you get offer little bonuses and you turn over your weapons and armor so much it's almost not worth the time. Once you hit level 15-20'ish you should start combining your gems (transmuting) and using the sockets on your gear. You should be saving all your gem shards in your personal chest.

That's a good question. I don't think anyone has done the math yet.

[/quote]

You need to find a fishing hole. There is one in the SE section of the main town. The deeper you go into the dungeon, the better the fishing holes will be.

The only thing I wish this game had was coop.  I haven't played this type of game with friends in a decade and I miss it.  Running through the dungeon I can only imagine how great it would be to be doing this with some of my buddies.

I know borderlands is sorta similar in that respect, but none of my friends play fps and have borderlands; but most play rpgs and are playing/have Torchlight.

I know they said there's an MMO version coming next year, but I don't want an MMO; I hate MMOs; I just want 2-4 player coop added :(

Also, I'm perfectly fine with their being 3 classes since it's $20.  I would definitely not mind paying DLC for additional character classes.

PSS.  I still don't get the point of the three "trees" under skills.  You can even skip tiers, so afaik there really is absolutely no difference between splitting the skills into 3 "trees" and just giving 1 giant tree with all the skills.  It's not like you're forced to play as one of 9 different character types.  There are 3 character types; end of story.

It does.

Plus you can have multiple characters if you want to make a new one and have your demo character transfer loot to your new character to make the start easier/quicker.

In the demo he never followed me and then just appeared at the boss cutscene.  When I played with my 2nd character he followed me through the dungeon and killed stuff.

Just beat the demo, and wow this is awesome. So easy to manage your inventory and skills, and everything is so smooth and seamless. The pet is a fantastic idea. The "not-Tristram" town music is fantastic.

Only problem is that the visuals are too busy, at least in the demo part. It's kinda hard to tell what some enemies are supposed to look like and when you start swinging it's hard to tell which enemy you're aiming at.

I had the same issue. But honestly I had the same issue with Diablo 2 although maybe to a lesser degree. It does get kinda busy and hard to track with all the special effects going off even though it looks real neat.

I think all the characters have XP+% skill.  My Alchemist does.

But even with using respec if you pump lots of points into that while playing so you level quicker, you lose out on ALL YOUR SKILLS...which at least playing as an alchemist is unthinkable since he is all about spells and summons and that's all skill based.

This game is so damn good.

I just got to the 17th floor with my warrior guy (on hard).  I'm pretty much focusing on dual weapons and heavy offense.  Between my two pistols and two melee weapons, I just destroy enemies.  My dog covers me by both distracting enemies and summoning creatures to help me out.  I rush in and beat the shit out of everyone.

I read about that.  I'm glad I already kicked the habit of enchanting everything I use because it was costing too much.

my biggest concern now is leveling up dexterity to the point where I can use better items without relying on armor that boosts that stat.  But the helmet I'm using boosts my dexterity by 16 points and lets me use two awesome pistols that do as much damage as my melee weapons (around 240).

-How do increase spell ranks? I see that there is a ranking, but there was no explanation as to how to increase it.

-It looks like you can disenchant anything that you enchant, and remove gems from equipment, basically undoing stuff. Is this correct?

anything else I need to know?

1.  You have to upgrade the appropriate spell mastery.  For example, my summon zombies spell is charm mastery skill, so I have to upgrade that skill for it to rank up.

2.  You lose either the gems or item when you disenchant.

I find myself playing this when I should be doing other things.
