Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 9 #1-10
I like it so far. The beginning was really rocky, it didn't feel like Joss and it didn't really feel like Buffy (where as, I thought at the very least Season 8 started
very Jossy.) The art has also been pretty middling to bad compared to Season 8. But I have to say, it's definitely getting more entertaining as it goes on, and I finally am caring about the story. It's also nice that it feels a lot smaller-scale than Season 8, which I didn't mind being so bombastic and over the top because you could always tell how much Joss hated being constrained by a shoestring TV budget, and it also felt like a natural progression from Season 7. But like I said, it's nice how much smaller scale Season 9 feels. Buffy's just trying to make it in San Francisco but has to balance her slayer duties with it -- if that isn't the essence of Buffy, I don't know what it. I also like where they're taking the characters. Xander and Dawn together is a bit weird, but it kinda works at taking both of them out of Buffy's life since they're just trying to live normal-ish lives with eachother. Willow being pissed at Buffy is a pretty interesting turn, and isolates her even more. That said, it kinda sucks not having the Scoobies together, since otherwise this does feel like a normal season of Buffy. Especially now that

, the whole Scooby dynamic just isn't there, which is the only thing holding it back IMO. But even then, that seems to be the theme this season: isolating Buffy (which isn't exactly a new concept, but the way they're doing it is.) Finally, it's also nice to have Spike back after him being AWOL for pretty much all of Season 8. I don't exactly know what they're going to do with him, but it seems like they have something planned.
