I read it as an Amazon Kindle book. Kindle comics have a kind of fake Guided View - basically "zooms in" on each panel one-by-one, but as an inset of the page, not a "full screen" zoom like Guided View.

My general impression is:

Amazon Kindle comic on 10" Retina tablet: totally okay
Amazon Kindle comic on 7" Retina tablet: not so great, no orientation change and no true guided view
Comixology on 10" Retina tablet: obviously okay
Comixology on 7" Retina tablet: Guided View is usually totally acceptable and a fine way to read digital comics

I should also mention I feel The Sixth Gun pales in nearly every respect (story, characters, and especially art) next to my friend's Weird West comic, Next Town Over.

The Sixth Gun vs. Next Town Over

Have you read The Sixth Gun?

I bought some Adventure Time comix by Ryan North during the last $0.99 / issue sale. The CYOA issue is good, though really pales next to the now-released To Be or Not To Be. I also got the 4-issue BMO arc because I love BMO. Some decent videogame jokes, but again, nothing essential.

Yeah, those were actually the more interesting part to me, since they are generally drawn wildly off-model. I enjoyed them well enough and may pick some more up next time there's a sale, but I don't really consider them Essential Reading even if you're a huge fan of the show.

Same here. In fact, I thought Sixth Gun was more akin to 100 Bullets when I bought it, which shows how little the fuck I know.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 9 #1-10

I like it so far. The beginning was really rocky, it didn't feel like Joss and it didn't really feel like Buffy (where as, I thought at the very least Season 8 started very Jossy.) The art has also been pretty middling to bad compared to Season 8. But I have to say, it's definitely getting more entertaining as it goes on, and I finally am caring about the story. It's also nice that it feels a lot smaller-scale than Season 8, which I didn't mind being so bombastic and over the top because you could always tell how much Joss hated being constrained by a shoestring TV budget, and it also felt like a natural progression from Season 7. But like I said, it's nice how much smaller scale Season 9 feels. Buffy's just trying to make it in San Francisco but has to balance her slayer duties with it -- if that isn't the essence of Buffy, I don't know what it. I also like where they're taking the characters. Xander and Dawn together is a bit weird, but it kinda works at taking both of them out of Buffy's life since they're just trying to live normal-ish lives with eachother. Willow being pissed at Buffy is a pretty interesting turn, and isolates her even more. That said, it kinda sucks not having the Scoobies together, since otherwise this does feel like a normal season of Buffy. Especially now that

Giles is dead
[close]
, the whole Scooby dynamic just isn't there, which is the only thing holding it back IMO. But even then, that seems to be the theme this season: isolating Buffy (which isn't exactly a new concept, but the way they're doing it is.) Finally, it's also nice to have Spike back after him being AWOL for pretty much all of Season 8. I don't exactly know what they're going to do with him, but it seems like they have something planned.

I picked up Sam Bosma's Fantasy Basketball 40 page comic at SPX (which was EXCELLENT). Really great fun once it gets going, and my favorite of my SPX acquisitions so far. Looks like a PDF can be bought here for 2 bucks: https://gumroad.com/l/QylAu

I really enjoy the main Adventure Time Comic, at least the two TPBs I've read so far. Very well done stuff that got me to reconsider watching the show, which I love now too. I also read the Marceline mini, which wasn't bad but wasn't great either.

Hey kids, comics
I bought comics last week and didn't discuss them

archer and armstrong (relaunch) awesome stuff.  lots of fun!
harbinger - finished the first two arcs and they are pretty good.  i need to finish the bloodshot comics before i start the Harbinger Wars cross over stuff.
defenders - matt fraction really wiffed this series.  it's not great.
mighty avengers - al ewing rulz.  disregard the greg land art and it's awesome stuff.
murder she writes - john allison of scary go round did a great little murder she writes parody.  great stuff and cheap on comixology
uncanny x-men - kieron gillen does some very good stuff here and i really enjoyed the 9 issues of the run i've read thus far
villains united - gail simone's lead into secret six.  fun little villain book.
zero #1 - i have no opinion on this just yet.  i'll need a few issues i think to see where it goes.
century west - howard chaynkin pitches a tv show and it's horrible.

Judge Dredd is amazing.  I'm currently reading Complete Case Files vol 1 and it's just nuts.  I never really had access to it in my youth and the times I would DL 2000AD it would be in the middle of stories so I'd have no clue what was going on, but the Wait, What? podcast has been talking up 2000AD stories and I thought I'd give these complete omnibuses from my library a shot and I'm just loving it.

Rat Queens #1 made me lol.  Foul mouthed Fantasy comic about women troubleshooters in a town that has absolutely grown tired of their shit and so they're given a task to do that will take them far out of the city, however an unknown assassin is targeting troubleshooting teams.

I have not.  I have heard good things about it, but I haven't tracked it down.  I just missed a comixology sale on back issues

Is there a good site for tracking comixology sales? I would buy just about everything at $0.99 / issue but I don't want to load the app every day just to go through their splash pages.

Why not just sign up for their mailing list? They announce every sale there, I think.

comics update.
I spent last night reading 4 recent ( within the past few years) Spider-Man trades by Dan Slott aaaaaaaand I didn't really like them.  This tying Spidey to the Avengers and the Fantastic Four put him into cosmic world shaking events and that just didn't appeal to me.  I get that they want SM involved in more of their stories but ehhhh.  It was very cool to see Peter's smarts play into a lot of the story lines though.  I really didn't like Doc Oc's visual design in the giant iron lung nor Scorpion's design in basically power armor.  I think the exaggerated anime style of the art is to blame for that.

I am also reading early Judge Dredd stories and they are AWESOME.  Essentially Silver Age Stories for Maladjusted Adults.  Absolutely wonderfully insane.  Brian Bolland's art is amazing.  I am thinking of diving into Rogue Trooper which is The Civil War + Craziness.

Sex Criminals #1 - For a sex comedy it's not really funny.  Will give it a few more issues to see how it goes.  Basically two people can stop time with their orgasms. the first issue is basically the origin story from the female character's point of view.  it's..ok, i guess.  I like Fraction and I like Zdarsky but this never really gelled for me.

Rat Queens #1 - this, on the other hand, made me laugh out loud.  foul mouthed violent fantasy with no redeeming qualities.  highly recommended.  I've read this issue like 5 times in the past two days.

Real West #1 - picked this up on a whim because it's an overlooked genre in comics and I quite liked it.  Violent and exciting and sad with some great art.  Will buy more issues in the future

Adventures of Superman #1 - I like these out of continuity Superman stories.  This tale of Superman finding out Krypton may not have been destroyed (again) is pretty rote, but he fights a giant gorilla that shoots lasers out of its eyes, so it has that going for it.

Batman 66 #13 - This is the best non-Johnathan Case issue yet.  Batman vs The Sandman so we get some weird surreal art flourishes and the tale is actually good as well.

I still need to pick up The Wake.

Oh, and Comixology is having a Godzilla Sale, get The Half-Century War.  It's written and drawn by the guy who did Orc Stain.  It's beautiful and messy.

"Street-hero" level Spider-Man is definitely the best Spider-Man.  It always seems out of place when he gets caught up in bigger events like that.

Agreed.  It says a lot when the comic even tells you "wait!  the jokes are coming, I promise!" but it never really...comes.  No pun intended.

Bought this shit at Half-Price Books today. I know literally one thing about it, and that is that it features the origins of Extraño, the gay hispanic wizard!

And that it was probably a sad attempt to recapture the magic of Crisis on Infinite Earths that failed miserably.

Sure,

Basically it's about a small pocket of humanity living in Central Park years after a catastrophic ecological event which set back humanity quite a bit.  The time is several hundred years after this event (NYC is really overgrown, looks like After Earth or the end of AI more than I Am Legend) and not only did humanity die out because of lack of civilization, but mythical creatures returned as well and they have been hunting down humans for a bounty placed on them by the queen of the mythical creatures.

the small pocket of civilization loses contact with another village in Albany and so a few members determine they have to go and find out what did it.

spoiler, it's monsters

Well Battle of the Atom is turning out to be a disappointing event.

Really in general, All New X-men has been the same shit since it started.

X-men:"Oh noes the O5 are here"

X-men:"we should send them back"

O5:"We don't want to go back, we're going to do something about this future!"

And then a few X-men act supid for no reason and say "well it's not good that they are here, but they should decide what happens to them"/

Thats all it's been with a whatever subplot with Mystique. And the O5 are boring. Angel stands in the background, Iceman makes the same jokes the Older Iceman could just make, and Teen Cyclops is moppy. Jean is ok, because her backstory is cool and Bendis really just wanted to write Jean.

Battle has basically been the same argument over and over, just with even more future X-men and now a lame future X-men that I can only assume is Arron's creation. It's just been boring, the same characters talking about the same things. For an event, the 50th anniversary no less, nothing shocking really has happened.

Uncanny Avengers is a much better follow-up to Uncanny X-Force than the new X-Force book turned out to be.   :yuck

And it's in black and white for the better part, and yet solid gold.

On your inference, I started reading house of m, it's pretty good, and there's another thing that that flows into I think? Rereading Sleeper, because modern Alan Moore predominantly sucks, and. Brubaker writes Fatale in an excruciatingly slow manner, and meanders like an old dude with Alzheimer's pushing a trolley.

I read the first issue and it was ok, I guess.  I've heard that it's super slow and not much happens, so I didn't really pursue it much further.

Apparently THE Star Wars book to read is the Wild Space Omnibus which collects Star Wars UK strips along with other assorted things

I have a feeling that

current-day Cyclops will die, and past-Cyclops and Jean stick around.

I could have sworn Cyclops was on the cover of an X-men issue set after BoTA. One where the solicit and cover imply some sort of Wolvie team up.

Just wrapped Vol 2 of the Complete Case Files of Judge Dredd.  I just cannot recommend these enough.  This volume is 2 "epics" rather than mostly one shots or shorter connected stories as in the first book.

The first epic is The Curse Earth, where Judge Dredd must lead a convoy to deliver much needed medical supplies to Mega City Two, the huge sprawling city that takes up the West Coast.  It's mainly an excuse for UK writers and artists to riff off of how the UK sees Fly-over country and it involves a pre-Jurassic Park theme park which cloned dinosaurs back to life (only to have a lack of govt funding shut the parks down leaving the dinos to roam free) and robot vampires that steal blood from the living to keep the last president of the united states alive, and also fighting mutants and religious fanatics.  It's pretty nuts, nowhere near as nuts as the second epic, The Day The Law Died

In the second epic, Mega City One deals with the rise of Judge Cal, plainly a parallel to Caligula (sadly missing the sex) with increasingly insane whims driving Mega City One to crazed totalitarianism.  It's a pretty fun tale.

I just started vol 3 on the train which promises the introduction of Judge Death, but so far it's just one shots that flesh out Mega City One.

This is a fun series to read.

I have been crazy busy at work and probably won't be able to pick up my books for a bit, but I've heard from many sources that it's good.  Enough sources that i'll check it out.

This week's Batman '66 is INSANELY good. Colleen Coover doing Eartha Kitt Catwoman vs. Yvonne Craig Batgirl, awesome art, superb animations, and the promise of Batman and Robin fighting ... Lord Death Man '66?!

I know it was mentioned on the last page but I wanted to chime in and shill for Hinterkind.  It really feels like it has potential and #1 is pretty damn entertaining.

Of buyers new to ComiXology in the last three months, 20% are women. That’s up from less than 5% when they started the app, and it’s a number that Steinberger says is changing rapidly. Comic book publishers, take note. The survey also found that of the readers who were reading their first comic digitally, many went on to buy comics in print. Again, comic book publishers, take note.

this is GOOD NEWS.
