to be disappointed, you'd have to have some built up expectations. I appreciate the concern. :-*

Also, I believe Heavy Rain will surprise many people - in a good way.

The Wii, again.

And I'm afraid Alan Wake will be shit. I think I'm already expecting way too much from the game.

Every PS3 exclusive.  Not because they will be bad games, but because their legion of fanboys will hype them up to be bigger than the reincarnation of Jesus.

This.

And why not hate on a game you've actually played and have good reasoning for hating on rather than prediction hating which only makes you look kind of dumb.

Among your picks, I always thought the original Dead Rising was incredibly overated so my expectations aren't exactly high for the 2nd.

Can DC Universe Online be a disappointment if you have no expectations for it?

Anyway, the games I'm at least hoping turn out good but I'm still skeptical of are Crackdown 2, Dead Rising 2, Alan Wake, and Heavy Rain.  I'd say GT5, MAG, White Knight Chronicles, etc. but I don't exactly have real expectations for any of them.

actually, just thinking about games next year, I'm amazed by how few PS3 games announced I care about compared to 360 games, which is the total opposite of 2009.

Generally when I'm skeptical its based on finding that the prior team or prior game of a studio I didn't like as much as I noticed most other people did. I think Alan Wake has a very good chance of being good based on resources and theme but then I've always thought that particular dev was a bit over-rated via Max Payne 1 & 2. Dead Rising is one of those early gen games that for some reason people seem to forgive instead of attacking it for how clunky and janky it actually was imo. If I was going to pick a controversial choice I would say Reach. Based on their track record I actually have pretty good confidence the game will turn out pretty well, but outside of Halo fanboys, I'm interested to see how the game is received especially coming after ODST. And just generally that the market has changed a lot since Halo 3 was top dog.

You can safely ignore the gamer nerds on both bore and GAF when it comes to racing and sports games. They don't play them so they generally have no clue as to what is good in those genres. It is a pretty big leap to go from a baseball game though to a completely different title like Dead Rising.

I've actually had indirect relationships with Blue Castle in the past and they are a good dev with a good process so for their sake I hope DR 2 turns out well.

I used to think that way, but this gen seems to have caused problems for others devs with good records.  Two that comes to mind are Free Radical and Factor 5.

also, these two

I'm thinking of just passing on Bioshock 2 until cheaper.  Alien vs Predator I also don't have expectations for other than really liking AvP2 on PC years ago.

Free Radical.

I don't think Free Radical has ever been all that great of a developer. They made functional shooters with funky style, which was nice, but I don't know what made me think they had it in them to develop something like Haze (or, what I assumed that Haze would be, which rumor has it was pretty spot on until a serous redesign halfway into development).

There are people who were very much fans of the Timesplitters series but honestly I wouldn't count myself among that group. It was a decent enough franchise that carried on that Goldeneye legacy but I thought other devs in the console fps arena had surpassed them.

Factor 5 had always had good tech but poor design.

Dante's Inferno

Is anyone really radically anticipating this game to make it a dissappointment? (Same with stuff like darksiders which somebody listed. I don't know anybody feverish for that title)

And the demo is up on both PS3 and 360. It's pretty much what I think most people expected. It's a not bad, decent god of war clone based on that demo. I think that's pretty much what everybody is expecting.

Timesplitters were goofy, fun shooters. No more, no less. Multiplayer was fun as hell, and I always thought they would sort of seize the Wii market. I guess they got in over there heads with Haze.

I'm a star wars fan so I liked them and at their core there was a good combat engine there. They were good (not great) games imo. It's just their games were always so by the books bland design wise that it tempered what I thought of them and what those games could and should have been. Unfortunately they never were able to combine the design side with their impressive tech side.

I almost hate to even step in these waters because I'm a Forza fan and all it does is encourage fanboy wars but I was underwhelmed with that GT 5 lap demo. Probably unfair to judge such a mammoth game off of such a small sample which I'm not going to do but that demo itself wasn't amazing.

FFXIII will surely have a huge backlash.  It's already starting.  I think the honeymoon hype period was the japanese launch day...

GT5 and FFXIII are two games in the "hyped and teased for so fucking long that they could never live up to expectations" category.  I mean, did car damage even make it into GT5 or is that coming with a patch in 2011?

Gran Turismo 5 - Might be decent but it won't be worth the long development time.  Although I'm semi-seriously waiting for the tell-all article about how Polyphony kept dropping the ball and blew through a Shenmue saga budget to end up with a game that probably should have been released in 2007 at its final state.

Natal (and all of its games) - After a laughably bad E3 2010 showing, Natal titles sputter out of the gate, delivering software that ranges from mediocre to embarrassing.  Microsoft spends shitloads of money on advertising for something that people don't want or like.  I await a Dean Takahashi article or book detailing about the various bumbling and fumblings of Natal.  While I expect Natal to be put to pasture quickly enough, it won't be in 2010.  This all assumes Natal is coming out in 2010.

Super Mario Galaxy 2 - I love the original and like what I saw on the video but I think a lot of people, including myself, are setting the bar too high for this one.  I'll re-Wii for this game but I don't think it will live up to the hype or expectations.

I'd say Alan Wake but I think people are more hyped that the thing is actually coming out, not that it is going to be amazing.

While I'm sure they will advertise the hell out of it and I'm actually a pretty decent defender of the Wii and the market it has attracted I agree the Natal has a big chance of flopping and not with the hardcore crowd which is utterly meaningless in the grand scheme of things but with the actual casual crowd they are seeking. The Wii just has that market on lockdown. I also don't expect much success out of that Sony wand.

Nintendo is apparently releasing WiiRelax.  The plastic finger condom thing apparently interfaces with it.  I could see it do decently in Japan, but it looks to be a flop everywhere else.  But I doubt you can call whatever they will release with that thing a game, so the discussion is moot.

There's no way everything in the Q1 flood will turn out good. By the end of March we'll have figured out which games were actually delayed for marketing reasons and which games were delayed because of inadequency worries.

On that note, while I'm not exactly going to be disappointed in them (maybe), I am wary of Bioshock 2 and the new Prince of Persia. They both seem like games that will end up shitty, especially PoP: The Movie: The Game.

As for Final Fantasy XIII, I'm kinda gleefully anticipating its backlash. Not because I hate the game or anything, but because I'm tired of everything Final Fantasy getting a free pass all the time. (Of course since Bioware is the new FF, this isn't much of a victory  :-\)

That would be MAG, Heavy Rain, God of War III and GT5. All are generally overhyped by the (internet) public, and I'm sure I'm gonna be disappointed in most, if not, all of them. Here's the kicker though, they're all being released in Q1*.

* GT5 doesn't have a confirmed Q1 release in any territory but Japan.

Its March, but it could slip to summer (June-July)

I don't see how God of War III could disappoint anyone. It's a bigger, prettier God of War I-II. You either like that or you don't.

If the PSP game didn't happen, and if GoW I & II were released further apart (iirc GoW I was delayed multiple times) then I might be more interested in a bigger, prettier, samey GOW.

The saturation of the series releases (I, II, CoO, HD, which were all basically the same), QTE-based games, clones, and action games in general killed all the excitement I had or GoW III.

Right, but then you can't really be disappointed in it when it releases. You already know what it will be.

Roughly agreed.

One of my peeves this gen is people having unmatchable expectations so that they can be debbie downer on everything that comes to the market. The reality is most of these big titles will turn out fine.
