group 2: meh, it's no Gears/Bayonetta.  Japanese devs shouldn't be doing FPS/TPS.

Demo was challenging, but I didn't die. I don't see how you could. I thought it had a nice balance of difficulty and AWESOME.

I kept dying and I really don't know why. I thought you are supposed to zip around?

I asked above what I was supposed to be doing. If it's a scoring game I shouldn't be hiding behind barriers, I should be attacking nonstop, but by doing that I was being punished. So next time I'll just treat it like Gears and take my time.

I found it to be a combination of Gears cover combat and zipping around. With the robot boss I used the cover until there was none left and then zipped around and took advantage of the slow motion.

Using the sniper rifle to pick off the enemies controlling the big walkers, and then taking over the walkers also really helped.

???

There's no sniper rifle in the demo.

Yeah, not really digging the demo that much. I mean it's a great combination of Gears and Bayo action but I feel those games handle their respective gameplay styles better.

Will rent for sure,. The full game seems like it can be a ton of fun.
??? ??? ???

Nothing about it is like Bayonetta.

There is a sniper; after you kill the first two or three guys and head into the next area, take a right up the stairs and the sniper is in the weapon container thing.

Am I playing the game wrong?  Everyone is saying not to play it like a GOW game, but those are tools and mechanics the game provides.  I did do the tutorial and figured out boosting and the manual bullet time mode, but this still feels like another stop and pop 3rd person shooter.  I don't get the high praise.

^ That's what I've been saying.... but apparently we are "playing it wrong"

The problem is after going off the much superior Bayo, this game isn't designed that way so we get our buttholes flex. Play it like Gears with silly slo-mo and boosting and sure it's "ok"

Huh? It plays like other third person shooters with cover.

It's just that unlock like those games, it's not slow as fuck. It's intense.

It's not get into cover.

Guy gets into cover.

Shoot.

Miss? Guy goes into cover.

Wait.

Wait.

Wait for ittttttttttttt

blam.

Which is more boring than an Ayn Rand book.

Vanquish, however, does the same formula but switches it up. You're in cover, but enemies and bosses routinely seek you out and rarely use cover. In fact, they BLOW YOUR COVER UP. So instead, you have to use the entire environment rather than using a bland ass cover -> wait -> wait -> wait -> wait -> wait -> shoot mundane formula. Whoever says it doesn't play like Gears is derp derp. It plays like Gears, except it plays in a way that it doesn't put the player to fucking asleep.

Aim to clear the demo in 7 minutes or less. It doesn't play like a typical TPS at all.

You can play it like Gears, but you're really not meant to.

The replayability of this game is ridiculous. Once you know where all of the enemies are in an act, you can plan out your path and just blow through everything so quickly. The scoring system really rewards speed more than anything.

My best time right now is 6:35 with a 19400 score, but I fucked up at the end since it took me two knockdowns to kill the boss. Oh well, will try to improve next time. :spin

The demo is so sick. Definitely shouldn't be played like gears, I found everything about the game pretty intuitive initially, only thing that kinda bewilders me is a melee attack overheating your suit instantly. But yeah, I already like this game more than Bayo.

I've been thinking about this and how everything is perfect and there's just one thing that sticks out:  what is the design idea behind melee?

When you're up close and surrounded by a few guys, you have 2 acceptable options to avoid sustain damage:
1.  Dodge + L1 to go into slow mo and take them all out
2.  Dash out to somewhere safe

But both of those require boost.  Since melee will put you RIGHT IN THE FACE of the enemy and leave you with NO BOOST, despite it looking awesome to jump kick a dude in the face, it seems like a bad idea unless there is only ONE DUDE standing there.  Doesn't make much sense.  There has to be some upgrades or a way to make melee more practical.  You should be able to boost up to a guy, jump kick his face, then roll back and shotgun the other guys next to him.

Use melee in combination with slow-mo to get the most of out of it.

The entire game is based around the energy bar.

You can upgrade your weapons, so I wouldn't be surprised if you could upgrade your suit as well.

Seems unlikely that at the end of the game, 1 punch = your entire bar drained.

See that's my problem. I was playing it like Bayo. You have to pop and stop and stay far. The boosting is just to reach enemies in rapid succession. I will try the demo again knowing this.

Bayo definitely poos on this.

Nice. Never thought about fighting the robut on the bottom floor. I always used the first turret to kill the transport and then saved the second turret for the boss fighter so I can kill him in one knockdown. That should save a good chunk of time and even earn more points.

The new Vanquish demo is up on the Japanese PSN, I don't see it on the US PSN or XBL yet.

It's basically just a challenge mode that ends after 5 waves of enemies. It does have new weapons to try out and new enemies to kill though. And for some reason the scoring window is turned off, but it does give you your completion time once you finish (I got 10:25 for my first attempt).

Game's still amazing. GotY status reconfirmed.

second demo is amazing.  Much harder than the first one.  I haven't finished it yet but I was on the last wave, last enemy, and the guy trapped me in a corner when I was grabbing grenades.  I ran out of ammo and did a melee hoping it would take him out.  It just left him with the smallest bit of health and me sad.

I saved the two AT-ST walker mechs for the final wave, so when all of those guys came they were quickly obliterated. 8)

I bet the rocket launcher works pretty well on them, I still haven't used that. I like to do the sliding dropkick to the big guys since it does a ton of damage and you can go into bullet time in mid air. Pretty easy way to kill a single one quickly.

As long as it has replay value I'm fine with this. Four hours is painfully short though. I was hoping at least 6-8.

Man, I hope Platinum knows what they're talking about. In most games, devs set completion times higher than what is actually true all the damn time. I'm really stoked for this game but four hours for $60? :-\
