No Ponyo for "best animated picture"? Not that it was my favorite Miyazaki movie by any stretch, but surprised at its absence...

It was pretty much a foregone conclusion at this point. The only thing I can say is that the lack of writing or acting nominations shows how shallow that Best Picture nomination truly is.

The Hurt Locker was amazing. It deserves to win something.

The only win I know is in the Best Animated Feature. UP will win that for sure. Hell, it's the only animation flick (does Avatar count?) in the Best Picture list.

Yeah, if they're going to start nominating animated films in the Best Picture category, the Best Animated Feature category needs to be axed. It pretty much gives whatever animated film nominated for Best Picture a consolation prize.

This should be Tarantino's year.

Nah. If there is going to be a spoiler, it'll be Bigelow, but it remains to be seen if the Academy will give the award to a woman. Otherwise, prepare for more king of the world antics.

So which awards can we turn to now for some movie circle jerking?

The Oscars have lost a lot of legitimacy in the past decade or so, this is pretty much the final nail in the coffin. The Internet is so saturated with film discussion that I think most of these awards are irrelevant at this point. The serious stuff will be doled out by the individual guilds from now on.

You're so impressionable Green Shinobi, I thought you had more life experience then to be swept away by such a movie. But it seems you experience stuff and learn nothing.

I thought the people in old folks' homes would have more life experience than to be swept away by the Wii, but we all saw how that turned out.

I know, but several very worthy films have been snubbed since then. And Best Animated Film was basically a reaction to the Beauty and the Beast nomination.

The only good Best Picture nominees (that I've seen) are Up, Up in the Air, D9, and The Hurt Locker.  Obviously The Hurt Locker should win out of those.

Fantastic Mr. Fox was great but Up and Coraline were both much better.  I think Coraline had better animation but  I personally liked Up more.  Edit: Holy shit why didn't 9 get a nomination?  That was great too.

Wow, fucking ten movies?

Anyways, I already saw the bitch about Half-Blood Prince being nominated for Best Cinematography. It did deserve some recognition, considering the cinematography in that film was awesome and better than the previous standout in the series, Prisoner of Azkaban.

Other than that, I still have quite a lot of these films to see. I've seen District 9, Up, Avatar (lol, please god don't win) Inglorious Basterds, and Up in the Air. My favorites out of those would probably be District 9 and Inglorious Basterds, although I can't really be upset if Up wins, since that film is pretty amazing as well.

Next on the list is The Hurt Locker, since it's on blu-ray.
