So far not that impressed by Final Fantasy "I'm no longer" XIII

My party consists of a "badass" "girl," the guy from the Cream of Wheat box, some dudebro, I guess eventually I get an obnoxious kid and his jailbait Aussie slut of a friend as well

I am enjoying entertaining myself by trying to decode the English-derived glyphs that appear on textures (about half the letters IDed so far) but the characters and story are faaaaaaart

MCD is spot on with SO4's battle system though. It's terrible.
All you do is BLINDSIDE MASH B BLINDSIDE MASH B BLINDSIDE. The entire game.

SO4 has no redemption. The battle system sucks, the story sucks, the characters suck, the cutscene direction sucks, the dungeons suck. How Tri-ace was able to top the crap that SO3 was is beyond me but they did it! I expect SO5 to somehow be even worse at this rate.

FFXIII's battle system is basically FF. You haste, protos, shell, slow, fire, blizzard, cure, attack. The only difference is now you do it at 50x speed and you can let the game autoplay itself like FFXII if you want (though you still need to R1 shift to get to the skillsets you want).
To me haste was the most important skill the entire game. Which is why I always kept sahz in my party until Hope learned haste at endgame. The battles end so much faster if you can haste your party from the start.

so4 has Things To Do(tm). and it's no fair criticizing so4's godawful plot/characters/story/dialogue when ff13 is dredged from the same cesspool -- and it's ultimately irrelevant to compare turds.

in so4 i am least dodging things and kitting a proper loadout, even if the battles are final fight with blindsides. ff13 up to chapter 3 is just an endless stream of pressing auto-battle and casting the occasional spell to start the stagger or quaffing a potion. so4 lets me explore, lets me do real crafting, and has some actual challenge.

again, they're both in c-grade country; arguing who gets the + or the - is pretty damn arbitrary. mass effect 2 this crapola ain't.

It's like I'm only playing because its this big sort of spectacle of a game and franchise. I don't really enjoy myself that much while I'm playing it nor do I really find it all that interesting. It's just sort of like I haven't played a FF game in awhile ( I haven't played a FF game since 10) so I thought I owed it to myself to see where the franchise is at. Its kinda an odd motivation to play a game.

Stoney where are you? Ch.2 & 6 are the worst parts of the game. There is this forest that just drones on and on forever.
Ch.7 is the first part of the game where it's actually an enjoyable (albeit linear) game imo.

The whole "straight path" shtick would be a lot more tolerable had they opted to make the level design more than simply paths with random monsters and straight paths with a few forks for dinky treasure chests.

It's a really really fucking fun game, but godammit. They couldn't have really thought that going through one dungeon with no gimmick or puzzles or enemy variety to speak of for HOURS would be good.

I'm definitely still in the early stages. I don't know which chapter exactly. When I play tomorrow I'll say where I'm at.

I'll stop kicking the game until I get a little further on. It's just that it gives an awful early impression. The first 2 or 3 hours are just stupid. From where I've been playing it's been starting to pick up but still, I just sort of feel like the game is on the wrong path from what I've been playing. I'm sure its going to get better but there is just something fundamentally wrong with a lot of the decisions they seem to have made.

To be fair to SO4, you don't have to blindside that much. You can fill your bonus board with 10% mana+health regen crystals and mash RT and LT for every fight as well. Depth!

Definitely not that great. Better than my last stab at the JRPG genre (the god awful, putrid, "makes me never wanna play another JRPG" Star Ocean 4), but a bit dull. The cast is much better than what we got in Star Ocean 4, Infinite Undiscovery, Blue Dragon, and Trusty Bell...but that's saying more about the state of the JRPG than it is the quality of XIII. :\

The fantastic visuals and soundtrack are basically the things pushing me forward. Well, I suppose I actually like the battle system as well...

Played till right past the warmech enemy in chapter 3...

First few areas:
Area 1 (the skyway) - kinda plain looking
Area 2 - (the temple) - looks like a rejected FF12 map
Area 3 (bresha lake) - absolutely fucking gorgeous...

Well, the story isn't really doing anything for me right now, voice acting isn't bad but I dunno. I expected something a bit more gripping at first, but FF stories do take a while to develop. Last FF stories I really liked were 6, 7 and 9. Battle system, well for the first 2 chapters, it's basically mashing the X button. Unlocked the sphere grid and paradigm shift, but even the paradigm shift seems to be auto battle, then occasionally hit L1 to switch paradigms to a healing one when your HP is low. So the game still feels like its playing itself for me.

Not to mention, I dunno if I'm getting old, but the game feels extremely spastic, you turn left or right the camera spins around so fast it took me back to the original Kingdom Hearts. Camera control is also really sensitive too. Even though the areas are straight corridors, I like to look around and admire the scenery a bit.

But yeah, graphics and cinemas look mindblowing, everything else is extremely 'meh' so far. Lost Odyssey will still probably be this gen's best FF game.

Oh and Vanille is pretty hot

Yep, Lost Odyssey is the best Final Fantasy this gen.

I just wish they could have built a game using something other than Unreal Engine 3. The Japanese have no clue how to utilize that engine well and the results are pretty painful at times.

Asian versions of RPGs are always in English, too - Mass Effect 2, Eternal Sonata, Blue Dragon, Lost Odyssey, Tales of Vesperia, Magna Carta 2, Infinite Undiscovery, The Last Remnant - I have the Asian versions of all of those and they're all in English.
