This show is ridiculous.

In addition to the constant profanity and cartoon gore, half of the time they are talking about sex or having sex. You get to see dude's junk, Lucy Lawless' boobs, etc.

... I don't know anything about the Spartacus legend, so I can't tell you if it's accurate or not. The violence is so ridiculously over-the-top. There's a lot of slow motion, but that seemed to die down in the second episode. It's on Netflix if you want to take a gander, Eric P.

I also realized something that blew my mind when i finally saw it, the black guy with the whip who trains them is also played by the same actor who got kicked off in the pit in 300 ("THIS IS SPARTA")

So much so that last night I watched the debut of SPARTACUS: BLOOD AND SAND on Starz.

Learn from my mistake, boys and girls. Don't go where I went.

Starz is not HBO, and this SPARTACUS is not ROME. Hell, it is not even SPARTACUS. Charles Laughton, Peter Ustinov, and Laurence Olivier are nowhere in sight. The writing and acting here are pretty much on a par with the historical accuracy. The visual style, especially in the action scenes, attempts to borrow from 300... but the slow-mo slaughter gets old really fast, and the giant gouts of blood being splashed around at every opportunity soon become silly, and began to remind me of nothing so much as the Black Knight sequence in MONTY PYTHON AND THE HOLY GRAIL. There's one scene near the end where a gladiator who has had both legs cut off is trying to drag himself away across the sand, and I was half expecting him to pop up, proclaim it just a flesh wound, and try to continue the fight.

I am going to have to watch all of I, CLAUDIUS again to get the taste out of my mouth. Pfui.

I have to be one of the few people who likes S2 of Rome just as much as S1 -- probably due to loving Mark Antony's character. S2 does take quite a few more liberties with regards to historical accuracy, though.

We brainstormed a bit, where a young aspiring thespian or writer meets up at the mansion of someone who seems particularly straight arrow (we were thinking Tom Hanks or Ron Howard), and when he walks inside - it's like a full on Roman orgy of decadence. Which he then learns is par for the course when you become established in Hollywood (Spielberg has five harems!).

That's a pretty spot-on review. It really is a stupid, meandering show. I feel uncomfortable just watching it at times and usually not because of the full-frontal male nudity (which does usually fit within the story, like when the gladiators are cleaning up or having gay sex), but rather the gratuitous female nudity (like random shots of women in the crowd completely topless).

If someone said it was stupid and juvenile, I couldn't argue with them.

... Still, it's kind of entertaining in the same way a five-car pileup is entertaining. You should be revolted, but you can't help but look on.

The entire show is gay. The last episode had a lengthy fight where Crixis and Spartacus started wrestling on floor - completely nude.

It made the nude wrestling scene in Borat look non-sexual in comparison. It looked like foreplay; I half expected both to start plowing each other's asshole right afterwards.
