As promised last month, Famitsu Xbox 360 held its big 100th issue anniversary event at Enterbrain's WinPa event space on the 31st. Famitsu.com was in attendance and delivered a report on some of the announcements that came during the various talk sessions.

The event featured appearances by Vanquish director Shinji Mikami, Valhalla Studio Chief Technology Officer Tomonobu Itagaki, 5pb. CEO Chiyomaru Shikura and Cave head of development Makoto Asada. The biggest announcements came from Shikura and Asada during their live recording of Shikura's Famitsu Xbox 360 "High Spec Machine; Low Spec Man" column.

Asada, known for his work on arcade-style shoot-em-ups, revealed that he's making an adventure game. This game is being done in the motif of detective adventure games that were released in the 80s and 90s. It will feature a 40-year-old male lead, although Asada joked that due to "adult circumstances," the character may change into a girl.

Vanquish looks nothing more than a game that "hardcore gamers" will play to brag about their skills and high scores.

To me it looks like a hectic japafag bullshit shooter game. And god, I hate shooters, and in this game you basically only shoot at things.

well i can't talk for "people" but i can talk for myself and i really liked the original

to be fair the actual game is really simple, you just punch monsters until you are strong enough to take care of the boss,if you are aiming for a high score you will go for the kill as soon as possible (which might be too soon) if not probably until the game says "OK! you are strong enough! go kill the boss!"

what makes it shine is that the game is divided in 50 scenario's and each scenario is different, full of secrets and wacky,in one of the scenario the boss is a black and white monster called CATS who seems like he just got out of a old gameboy game, his power consist of turning the land into black & white and he quote zero wing intro (he declares "ALL YOUR COLOR ARE BELONG TO US") if you reach a certain place before he GBize it and put a secret code, you get a secret weapon

in another scenario you have to defeat a really strong boss and you can go north or south,if you go south you make a pact with a demon and you go into path A,if you go north you team up with a cleric which puts you into path B,if you defeat the monster without the help of anybody by grinding yourself silly, you get a secret achievement

in another scenario the big baddie has removed all of the monsters on the map (so you can't grind!) so you ask for the help of an hermit and he decide to train you, normaly you are supposed to just train until you are strong enough to defeat the boss and complete the map but if you grind yourself silly, the hermit issue you a challenge,if you beat the hermit (and he's REALLY strong!) you gets extra equipment!

(NOTE: consider that "grinding yourself silly" in this game means wasting 5 minute on a map instead of 2)

I'm not big on shooters either, especially cover shooters, but Vanquish looks more like my thing because like Uncharted 2, it's not a slow cover shooter. It emphasizes speed and finesse and fluidity. Not like boring ass Gears of Snore.

Yup, looks amazing. Bayonetta and Mass Effect had a fucking beautiful baby.

I was just calling third out cause he says he doesn't like stupid games about shooting things but unless he liked GTAIV for Oscar winning story, shitty driving and bland lifeless sandbox play what the fuck did he like it for? I don't care if he doesn't like tps games but he continually goes on about GTAIV being best sandbox game this gen which was basically a mediocre tps set in NYC.

I still liked it at the time but I don't wank on about it then diss on games that look 10x more creative and fun. Pretty much I think he's an idiot.

I'm not into those hectic games where you can do 403959 combo-hits in two seconds and then try to beat that high score. I want games that are slower paced than this mess.
The game just looks stupid and has a generic mecha look to it.

wow, terribad. :rofl

And there's no freedom in the game, just a lineair path where you shoot at everything that moves. And it will probably have a stupid story also.

Mikami has potential to make a good game. But his last few projects have been atrocious. God Hand and Killer 7 are very bad games.

Judging games by their covers. SMH  >:(. Didn't you like ME and Alan Wake? Both pretty linear games where you walk down paths and shoot things. Who knows what kind of mission structure Vanquish will have. Albeit it'll be linear like Bayonetta but I have no problem with that.

Me2 has a pretty good cover imo. And yeah, I liked both ME2 and Alan Wake. But the games also have calm moments in them where you can explore the environments.
Those games aren't really comparable to Vanquish. Vanquish is more of an arcade shooter game. The gameplay is very quick and there's non-stop action.

We know nothing about the game's flow or structure except you shoot shit. In fact, most footage we've seen seenms to be from the same level. What is your point? Points? What the fuck. Who cares, the same thing is in Ninja Gaiden and Devil May Cry.

Resident Evil 4 was linear and the same thing. It's godly. Who cares.

LOL, RE4 is nothing like Vanquish. RE4 is slow paced and has some amazing scenario's in it. I'm sure that Vanquish will be nothing more than "shoot and kill everything to clear the stage"

Aren't you the one who likes the boring and almost death-inducing Shenmue games?
The majority of games I play are slower paced games like adventure games or rpgs. I'm not into the high-score games where everything moves at a light speed. I want to play a game, finish it and move on to the next game. Don't like to replay a game just to master it.

Well one thing that does not work: companies should focus more on shortening release dates between the Japanese and US versions. It's ridiculous that even in this day and age, some games take 1+ years to come out in the US.

Japanese role-playing games are different from Western ones. And by "different" some would say, "not as good".

During the 1980s and 1990s, Japanese role-playing games flourished, but some now say that the current JRPGs seem trapped in time. Fans of the games believe that if something is not broken, then why fix.

You are looking at the Japanese ad for American role-playing game Fallout: New Vegas. A group of young Japanese hold protest signs that read:

(Image removed from quote.)

• "I think it would be good if the hero had missions that weren't only about destroying evil."
• "The player is weak, the enemy is weak. That's way too convenient."
• "When did games become something you watch?"
• "Because the story doesn't change, what's the point of playing it again?"
• "Games nowadays are focusing way too much on photorealism."
• "What's a game that's moving in accordance to the scenario? It's the same as living on rails."
• "Levelling up is time for motivation down!"
• "The stage has been set. After that, you're free to do whatever!"

This ad is arresting, eye-catching. It is, without being too blunt, a publicity stunt.

That doesn't mean the messages on these signs hold any less true.

Games like Fallout and Mass Effect are doing their best to make the vast majority of Japanese role-playing games look horribly dated and worse yet, stale.

Japanese developers might want to take heed of these signs — not to copy Western role-playing games, but to rework the elements of their games that, well, no longer work.

Well in the Fallout ad, I definitely agree with points 1 and 5.

Quote
• "I think it would be good if the hero had missions that weren't only about destroying evil."
• "Games nowadays are focusing way too much on photorealism."

The rest of it is pretty stupid. I don't see why every game needs nonlinearity and open-endedness. Funny enough, the people who are so in favor of choice in their games are the ones who want every game to play exactly the same. Shouldn't gamers have a choice between playing open-ended and linear games?

Don't want to sound like a nonconformist all of the time, but I really love turn based rpg's and slow games.
Maybe I'm getting old.

The Naruto Storm 2 demo is sick... oh my god I might have to play this when it comes out just for the scenes.

The special attack scenes are a big reason why I've been buying the cc2 naruto games since back on the PS2.  They have better style and quality than the actual anime.  It's nice that UNS2 is going to have big boss fights and more of the scenes for single player since the first on PS3 was pretty empty.  One video of a boss battle made it look like a rail shooter.

I just wish they'd make another .hack game, or something else other than Naruto, or learn about antialiasing.

oh, and it's nice that they even have nice animation when you fail a qte.

There's a Nier demo on JAP marketplace as well, in English. Why Square Enix doesnt put this in America marketplace is beyond me.

Quote
A meeting room in the belly of a Parisian office block: Ubisoft producer Florian Granger stands to his feet to address a group of serious-looking, middle-aged men. These are some of the company's most experienced game designers, artists and coders, veterans of Ghost Recon and Red Steel campaigns, architects of solemn videogames about war and tactics, strategy and death.

Granger's job? To reveal the next assignment the assembled group will be working on. The project? A Wii game. A Wii party game. A Wii party game based almost entirely upon a mini-game that first featured in another Wii party game, months earlier. A Wii party game that, within 18 months of this meeting, will have gone on to sell three and a half million copies and knocked the record-breaking Modern Warfare 2 from its top spot in the sales charts. A Wii party game whose instruction manual also happens to also be its name: Just Dance.

"You'd think the team would have been cynical about the project," explains Granger. "There was a flood of casual games coming out for the Wii at the time, all offering the same-old experiences with no innovation or real attention paid to the player experience. But there was immediately a sense of excitement within the group. I think that was because the codebase for the game was already proven, and the games we were looking to learn from and build upon were respected titles like Dance Dance Revolution. Our reference points were authentic."

Just Dance began life as a music mini-game in the Raving Rabbids series on Wii, in which the player used the Wii Remote and nunchuk to 'dance' in time with a piece of music. Gregoire Spillmann, Just Dance's creative director, enjoyed the mini-game, but wanted to explore what would happen if you removed nunchuk and strict Rhythm Action gameplay and allowed the player to dance more freely.
