I honestly think it's a social criticism on the rote and student-trivializing nature of modern education.

I never thought about the minigames this way, but that explanation actually makes those minigames a lot more clever.

When it comes to open world games in general, I love when you get enough stuff to become overpowered. I love the progression of starting out with next to nothing and amassing tons of gear, and tons of perks. Bully doesn't ramp up in ways that are enjoyable to me. Eventually you get kicked out and live in your own place, you get a motorized scooter. That kind of stuff is neat contextually for the main character, but it isn't that neat for me as the player. The incentive to play is the game's charm and characters I feel.

I've recently put a large amount of time into Saints Row 2. The stuff you unlock from activities and doing main missions is incredibly rewarding. Buying storefronts, buying and decorating cribs, collecting cars, earning cars. Getting unlimited sprint, automatic pistols with infinite ammo.

The progression of cash and gear is why GTA San Andreas is still a contender for the best GTA game. The pacing is perfect for unlocks, along with the game giving you enough activities from the start to get really cool perks and a ton of cash. By the end of the game you should own all the property in San Andreas, have a couple million dollars left to spare, the best weapons, fully modded vehicles, fancy clothes.

Saints Row 2 is the GOAT sandbox game.

It's one of the few games that truly gets and understands the genre: that you're molding your character and that the goal is to give an ever increasing roulette of toys to play with. It rewards you for everything. It doesn't hand out rewards, but it rewards experimentation, putting time into the game, exploring, and playing the game well, which even GTASA doesn't do.

Co-op makes it even better.

Yeah, but fwiw Paper Mario was funny as hell in English because they like to be silly.  I remember playing Paper Mario 2 in Japanese and it was dry and standard and totally not funny at all.

I mean face it, Nintendo games aren't really known for their writing or stories, so I'm fine with NoA injecting humor into their localizations even if some of it is cheesy.

I think I hated Persona Q overall despite liking EO in general, but I'm of the opinion that these games should be about 15-20 hours max rather than 60-80.

In AC Unity, they had some similar stuff where the bios were written from the perspective of a history nerd working on the animus program rather than a textbook and there'd be lots of snipey comments. It made it funny to read.

That's always been the case. Shawn/the history dude is the one that fills out the animus comments. Well, until Black Flag. I dunno if Unity/Rogue bring Rebecca and him back for the "not-Abstergo" animus writings, but they've always had "comedic"/sarcastic snipes since at least 2.

They are in Unity and one of the better things about that game. Especially since Shaun is a Brit and doesn't even pretend he's holding back his biases about the French in his side notes. It always felt like it was worth popping open the menu just to see what he wrote about events.

Question : What Front Mission would you recommend to play ? Game must be available (have a PS3 and a PC) and localized in english. Saw a video yesterday evening of the beginning of 3 and it scratched my tactical itch.

I played FM3 back in the day and had tremendous fun with that (I was able to cheese the last mission, tho) and I had forgotten how the game had such good mechanics and was right up my alley. I would not be adverse to playing 3 again (it's on the PS store for pretty cheap) but I figured I might as well ask for a new experience.

Priority is for a solid tactical experience in battle. I'm lukewarm on the worst excesses of JRPG tropes (FM3 didn't strike me as the worst there, except for the protagonist repeating the last word of the phrase just uttered as a question. MIDAS ?)

The original Front Mission came out on DS with an extra, optional path that unlocks when you beat the game (speaking of which, I never played through that). I've heard good things about 5, and although it never got an English release there's a fan patch for it.

I've never played a Front Mission but you have a lot of options available.

Front Mission (1) - Emulator (SNES/DS)
Front Mission 3 - Emulator (PSX); PS3 (Retail or via PSN)
Front Mission 4 - Emulator (PS2)
Front Mission 5 (fan translation) - Emulator (PS2)

I played Front Mission on DS (which I understand is pretty faithful/improved from the SNES original). It was alright but these games feel so slow /ponderous I really don't have the patience to get through (I played for about 10 hours) and start thinking about all the other things i could be doing with my time. The soundtrack is one of my favorites from Shimomura & Matsueda, and there's only about 45 minutes of it vs. 50+ hours getting through the game so I'll just listen to that =P

That's my main problem with SRPGs. They feel so unbearably slow. I tried to play Devil Survivor on the DS, but that's an SRPG where you then go into JRPG battles when you engage enemies and that's just... No.

I didn't remember FM1 to be that long (though I only did the main mission, not the optional mission exclusive to the DS version), think it took me ~25 hours. Which is pretty short by SRPG standards.

The $80 Fire Emblem version is going to be the superior version. Actually comes with both games on a single cartridge, unlike having to buy two separate cartridges.
