Never actually owned a PS1, but my best friend's older sister had a PS1 and N64 we'd play on when I was visiting. Coincidentally she was my favorite friend to visit because her parents were never home.

the difficult part of using that nowdays would getting a serial port to usb connector or something, then the software would probably get in one of those "you need an operating system of Windows 98 or ME or newer" loops (like half the games i have on Origin can't be installed because of EA putting this check on their games back then but i guess you get what you don't pay for because their store broke that one time)

She started by asking if she could run it on her Surface Book, which we tried and it went terrible. Then she asked how she would even go about buying a computer. I ended up building her a part list and decided to get her a Ryzen build. Hopefully it ends up being decent, afaik they are pretty good.

So what's the complete build list? Ryzen is solid, especially for a first PC. We could go into performance details and go full turbonerd on it, but I'm pretty sure she'll be happy with it assuming you've done your job well.

16GB DDR4 RAM
GTX 1060 6GB GPU

For her I picked out a Fractal Design Node 804 case so she can tuck it away under our coffee table when it's not being used.

Honestly I really just reviewed the Neogaf PC 2017 thread and the builds on PCPartPicker.com and then went from there.

In some ways it's a better PC than mine, because I'm still using an older Ivy Bridge i7 3770k and DDR3 RAM. But I do have a GTX 1070.

Sounds good for a first-timer! Did you build your own btw? I assume you checked the RAM speed compatibility with the AB350M since that could be your only issue based on your list. Would suck if the speed got downgraded, or wasn't compatible with the mobo. Building PCs never get boring, and I love hearing about other people's purchases. So sorry for prying.

I also have a 1070 and it's my baby.

Been watching Polygon's Battleground streams. This one they're playing the zombie custom mod. I gotta say, this is probably the closest representation oh how terrifying being in a zombie apocalypse can be. There's a part where they decide to get on a boat and as they go along the coast they try to go to a remote part of the map only to find... nope, zombies are still there. At one point the go under a bridge and a friggen zombie jumps off at them.

It's really interesting to me because ostensibly the zombies are controlled by human players but the actual act of playing - being that they have limited abilities - the basically become zombies in their actions. They have a singular objective and do whatever they can to carry it out.

It's a genuinely unnerving video to watch while also being fun.

), there's some good points made in this video about the current state of console and PC gaming. It really can be easier and more convenient to play a game on PC nowadays compared to consoles.

That said...his points to me mainly apply to Microsoft. I see zero reason to own an Xbox One if you have a good PC, but Sony and especially Nintendo have enough games on their consoles that are not available on other platforms, either from themselves or from third parties.

And consoles are still cheaper.

You can still get Wolfenstein 2009 on consoles. I ordered the PS3 version new off Amazon the other day...couldn't find the PC version anywhere, although I bet there's used disc copies on eBay.

It's in digital ownership limbo like a lot of stuff.

Activision claims Zenimax owns it because they bought id and the IP, which is technically accurate, but Activision and Raven would have all the actual game stuff stored somewhere and apparently nobody asked for it? Activision has said they wouldn't do anything about Zenimax selling it, but I assume Zenimax would have to get the assets and everything from Activision to put it out, which probably means a side deal of $$$. I'm assuming that if id had it all there wouldn't be much of a problem. (Like RTCW and Quake 4 which made the trip over from Activision just fine.)

IIRC, on PC you might as well just pirate the whole thing because you should crack it anyway because of the DRM it has. (And I want to say cracking it lets you use something to change the tiny FOV and stuff too.)
