For the first time I'm disappointed it's not a spinoff.  :lol I was hoping for a whole game to run around Quadratum, but now I'm just going to assume it's the 4 hour tutorial before you meet up with Donald and goofy and go to star wars land or marvel or wherever

Eh, even that area just looks like boring Shibuya. It's not even stylish TWEWY Shibuya and maybe it's just because it's during the daytime, but doesn't look as cool as FF15's city or the Verum Rex stuff in KH3.

I'm sure it'll be touched up and good looking by the time it releases. That bit is very vertical slice demo.

There's no general PC thread that I'm aware of, so I'll ask here

Looking to get a new PC -- the one I'm on is... old, to say the least.

Not that interested in buying individual parts and building, so hoping there's a decent pre-built out there. Doesn't need to be a demon, just want a new PC to use. Price isn't really an issue.

Any services/sites you all vouch for, or can provide link?

What kind of performance are you looking for?

4k? 60fps? Max settings? 120fps?

I'd recommend a 120hz-165hz gsync monitor if you're upgrading your gaming PC rig. Most older PC games can run at like 80-150fps pretty easily and it looks nice.

Hmmm, I've always thought emulators were more cpu dependent than anything else. So you probably want a good cpu and can chill a bit on the gpu. The gpus are generally what drives the price of pre-built computers up.

My biggest issue with pre-builts and why I've always built stuff myself is they can be ugly as fuck like alienware and GAMER stuff. I think if you can find a pre-built company that makes non-flashy gamer shit and just get something with like a 3070 in it you'd be set.

Googling a bit, reddit has a "suggest a PC" discord that supposedly has lists of the best pre-built PCs and you can submit a ticket with your specific build desires to get recommendations:

https://discord.com/invite/aPqaTnG

Also price-wise you're probably looking in the $1,500-$2k range if you're looking for a gaming PC that like plays modern videogames in addition to Saturn emulators. If you really only care about emulators you can probably make a <$1k computer that doesn't do 3d gfx stuff much.

Yeah. If all you’re after is emulation and basic computer work, you don’t need a GPU. That’s currently the big price sink. Even the Steam deck can go handle up to PS3 emulation.

This doesn’t show emulation but it’s an idea of how few parts are needed these days to get something out together. Prebuilts, if you can configure them without a GPU or the cheapest options, it’s on the CPU.

I have one of their laptops with a mobile 3080, which to my understanding is equivalent to the desktop 3070- it's fantastic and gets great framerates even at 4K.  Is absolutely crazy at 1440P.  Not sure about that price, though.  Seems like it should have more ram and a larger SSD for that price.  Or are part prices still high?

Can also vouch for Computer Upgrade King, who builds and resells mostly MSI stuff.  They have good prices and excellent customer support/warranties.  The desktop I got from them had a major problem and they replaced the 3080 and a 2TB SSD inside for free.

I think most companies are moving away from the whole "GAMER" thing, Alienware aside.  Both the desktop and laptop I got in the past two years look more like "normal" PCs.  You'd never know how crazy powerful the laptop is especially and that it's a gaming device with the lighting turned off or set to a static color.  It's also very thin and pretty light for a 17" model- another thing that has changed a lot recently.  My older laptop from 2016 is much, much bulkier in comparison.

spoiler (click to show/hide)

[close]

That seems to be the case for a lot of stuff- it's all in the lighting now.  Gone are the crazy GMRRRR chassis designs and/or stupid large plastic red grills and whatnot.

I can understand wanting a more normal-looking laptop that you'd take with you, but at home, you've already got game consoles and nothing is more obnoxious looking than the the Playstation 5.  :P

Yeah, most gamer laptop designs look like they’re fueled from the fever dreams of someone high on Mountain Dew and Doritos. It’s difficult to imagine dragging one to a client for offsite work and pulling out the tech equivalent of a car with undercarriage neon lights.

that maingear pc looks alright. i spent about 2500 building something very similar with a 5800x but with a 3080, 1TB pcie 4.0 nvme ssd + 2 8TB drives in Raid 1 (plex stuff) and 32GB of RAM. and that was at peak GPU pricing (got a decent deal on the GPU but still ~$300 more than the deals you can get now). if you cbf building yourself you could build a significantly better box for 2k atm.

windows licensing though i guess. i have msdn and basically infinite keyz, and afaik you can usually get a good deal through some roundabout method

Really seems like GPUs are main component getting inflated. When they were in stock, could go 2x msrp. Things are settling down, but the 4000 line of Nvidia cards shouldn’t be far off? Quickly checking a 3070 ti, listed at $599. Most selling for $850.

High-end GPUs have always been supply constrained because they don't actually sell as much as the lower tiers so they got doubly hit when the crypto stuff plus COVID came in. CPUs just aren't as complex so yields are better and Intel has a gigantic manufacturing capacity compared to nvidia. As capital-G Gamers we just never noticed because nvidia constantly could refresh the top of their lines and introduce new products fast enough to meet demand of gamers while pushing the former high-end down to supply lower tiers. While the 3000 series wasn't a failure and got hit with mostly outside issues, when nvidia did have a failure in the FX (GeForce 5000) line it nearly killed off the company. Intel comparatively does so much "normal" business they're borderline immune to this.

nvidia has obviously grown since then and become dominant but the high-end GPU market is still like that enough to where these supply issues can easily derail an entire line for an extended period, it just won't kill the company because they now have enough business elsewhere. I imagine that the next series nvidia has coming won't have the COVID issues and many of the changes in the crypto mining stuff like specific cards for it should help alleviate some of the recent issues, it's just unfortunate if you haven't been able to punt through it.

On a related note, it's really been impressive how far Intel has come on their internal GPUs, that shit was so so so completely awful for so long it still feels like a miracle to see what they can do these days even if the leap was a few years ago now.

Rumor: Game Boy and Game Boy Advance emulators for Switch leaked

Pretty good GBA list if true.  GB is severely-lacking.
spoiler (click to show/hide)
Game Boy and Game Boy Advance emulators for Switch have seemingly leaked through a post on the imageboard website 4chan.

A 4chan user posted download links for four files—two NSP (Nintendo Submission Package) files and one 7z (7zip) archive containing two NCA (Nintendo Content Archive) files—which were apparently dumped from a Switch development kit.

The two NSP files are a Game Boy Advance emulator called “Sloop,” while the two NCA files in the 7z archive are a Game Boy emulator called “Hiyoko.” The Game Boy games themselves appear to be separate applications.

Both emulators are reportedly signed by Nintendo Europe Research & Development, a Nintendo subsidiary headquartered in Paris that previously developed the DS and Wii emulators for the Wii U Virtual Console, the emulators for Nintendo Entertainment System Classic Edition and Super Nintendo Entertainment System Classic Edition, and the GameCube emulation technology used in Super Mario 3D All-Stars.

Twitter user TrashBandatcoot posted several tweets about the leak, including screenshots of the emulators, as well as links to a Twitter account that published footage of each one in action. That Twitter account no longer exists, but an archive of the page is available.

Another Twitter user, Mondo_Mega, posted an alleged list of Game Boy Advance games tested on the emulator, as well as the four separate Game Boy game applications.

The list of games include:

Game Boy Advance

Astro Boy: Omega Factor
Car Battler Joe*
Castlevania: Aira of Sorrow
Castlevania: Circle of the Moon*
ChuChu Rocket!*
Drill Dozer
Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones
F-Zero: Maximum Velocity
Game & Watch Gallery 4
Golden Sun
Golden Sun: The Lost Age
Gunstar Super Heroes
Harvest Moon: Friends of Mineral Town*
Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories*
Kirby and the Amazing Mirror
Koro Koro Puzzle Happy Panechu!*
Kuru Kuru Kururin
Lufia: The Ruins of Lore*
Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga
Mario Golf: Advance Tour Mario Kart: Super Circuit
Mario Party Advance*
Mario Tennis: Power Tour
Mario vs. Donkey Kong
Mega Man Battle Network 5 – Team ProtoMan*
Mega Man Battle Network 2
Mega Man Zero 3
Metroid Fusion
Metroid: Zero Mission
Mr. Driller 2
Ninja Five-O
Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Red Rescue Team*
Pokemon Pinball: Ruby & Sapphire
Super Mario Advance 4: Super Mario Bros. 3
Super Robot Taisen: Original Generation
Tactics Ogre: The Knight of Lodis
Wario Land 4
WarioWare, Inc.: Mega Microgames!
Yoshi’s Island: Super Mario Advance 3
The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap
*Denotes a game that was previously in the ROM folder, but not in today’s leaked build.

Game Boy / Game Boy Color

The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening DX
Qix
Super Mario Land
Tetris
The emulators also include references to EZ-Flash cartridges, which Nintendo has long regarded as an illegal game copier. ModernVintageGamer, a YouTuber and game developer at Nightdive Studios and Limited Run Games, noted that Nintendo internally recognizing EZ-Flash cartridges raises questions about whether the emulators were actually developed by Nintendo. But Twitter user OatmealDome noted that the Git repository used for the project indicates that the image of the EZ-Flash cartridge was added by a Nintendo Europe Research & Development employee–whose name and email address is listed—on August 7, 2020. While faking a Git repository and setting specific email addresses and names when making commits (a snapshot or milestone along the timeline of a Git project) is technically possible, doing so would apparently take a lot of time and effort. Traces of code in the Game Boy Advance emulator also appear to indicate it was co-developed by Panasonic Vietnam.

As for what this all means—the speculation is that these are emulators tested for an eventual inclusion in the Nintendo Switch Online subscription service, which currently features games across the Nintendo Entertainment System, Super Nintendo Emulation System, SEGA Genesis, and Nintendo 64 libraries. But whether that ends up true remains to be seen. Both Eurogamer and Nintendo Life reported in September 2021 that Nintendo was set to add Game Boy and Game Boy Color titles to Nintendo Switch Online, with the former also claiming that “other retro platforms are also on the cards.” Later that month, Nintendo announced the addition of Nintendo 64 and SEGA Genesis titles.

Both will still sell better on the Switch because portability trumps graphical upgrades.
