No I know where the tutorial is and yeah I saw that it was overly long. Hence I just said screw it and went about my day with the game. It was more enjoyable to just jump in the game and figure it out.

Yeah, definitely gave up on Xenoblade part way through and Monolith for good along with it.

I remember buying Xenosaga 1 at launch all excited and after I finished it (at the time I finished every game I bought) just immediately started thinking less of it and steadily progressing downward from there over time. The lack of music was such hot garbage. Then everything I read about Xenosaga 2 pre-release put it in the no-buy category and I was done with the series.

I missed the Valkyrie Profile talk though, that's one of my favs. The only worthwhile game made by Tri Ace as far as I'm concerned.

VP2 is better than VP1 imo. The combat system, dungeon system are aaa-tier. The characters and story aren't bad, either. Seriously, play it. i think it's the winner of that generation in terms of jrpg gameplay.

really wish I had the patience to enjoy an RPG only for the combat, I'm sure it was great.

What was good/interesting about the dungeon system?

Puzzles. The puzzles are extremely well made. You freeze things with photons like in 1, but you can now switch places with them if you shoot them again. So let's say there's an enemy on the other side of a gap you can't jump across, you just switch places. It leads to a unique platforming and puzzle solving element to a genre that generally has dungeons that are mostly about risk and brute force. Much like with the original, it's refreshing. VP2 builds upon what 1 started and just goes to town with the wonders of 3d that they just couldn't do in 1. You need to freeze and trade places a lot in order to unlock the desired items and loot in each dungeon, such as seal stones.

Seal stones are initially locked into the dungeon. Let's say, one dungeon has 20% attack up. It's sealed into the dungeons alter. By being in the alter it affects enemies. You want it OUT of the alter, and you will be handicapped until you take it for your own and replace it with something else. Then dungeon are often unpredictable due to the seal stones. What one dungeons stones may be, will be different from the next, and the dungeons function as a kind of cat and mouse game of trying to topple the enemies or be wary of enemies depending on what stones are equipped. You'll be fighting an uphill battle if you don't have specific seal stones, so again, solving puzzles does wonders.

The battle system is a unique blend of strategy rpg, puzzle game, and standard VP. You can split up party members and lure enemies intro traps. You can hide behind environments for cover. You can dash. Let's say there's a pit of miasma. How do you get across? How can you use the miasma to help you benefit from the battle? Environment plays a huge role in VP2's battles, which again, is refreshing due to how static and non-interactive most rpg battles are.

Battles, dungeons, puzzle solving. The game combines all three so effortlessly and so flawlessly it comes ahead of the cream of the crop on the ps2.

The game still has a lot to offer than just combat. It's got tons of content, a brutal post-game, some cool characters, and astonishingly great presentation and dungeons. It ain't no Suikoden in regards to story, but it works. If it can be gotten cheap, give it a shot.

thanks for the writeup himu, that dungeon stuff sounds p. solid

my biggest turnoff with the game is that it seemed to strip out everything that was cool and interesting in VP1 (you probably know what I'm talking about). I mean yeah, it was kinda BS that you had to use a guide to get the best ending true, but everything else about that game felt so fresh and it's weird that there's never been anything even remotely like it since. Feels like you can say that about a lot of PSX RPGs.

The best part of VP1 are the storylines, but VP2 is no slouch in that. I wrote stuff years ago on how they compliment each other. I'll try to dig it up.

i like the one about the bandit trying to redeem themself, but a lot of them are about someone making a noble sacrifice to save someone and last way too long!

it doesn't matter anyway because once they have told you their sob story, they stop having any sort of dialogue at all which make everyone boring as fuck

I see ot of RPG talk and since its boring to read I will contribute:

- Baten Kaitos is awesome, you're a loser if you are on the wrong side and card battle systems are the best thing ever
- Xenosaga is creepy
- Xenoblade is the best game ever
- Resonance of Fate is boring
- VP1 sux weenies since its full of fluff and the actual game only starts at the very end (nevermind the horde of useless chars, barf barf barf)
- Never played VP2

VP1 is damn good, VP2 is better gameplay, worse story, RoF is great but repetitive and broken.  Those are the top 3 Tri-ace games and top Tri-ace is great jrpg-ing.  Agree with the rest.

Anybody watching the documentary series "Diggin In The Crates"? It's all about retro game music, and it's done by RedBull (yes, the energy drink company) of all things... some electronic artists (Anamanaguchi and Flying Lotus being the most famous) and hiphop artists talk about their influences, and there are small interviews with game composers like Hip Tanaka. It's really awesome. And they mention awesome Konami famicom sci-fi RPG Lagrange Point.

Android?  No idea.  Ask magoose.  But co-op RPGs are pretty rare in general.  Can't think any even in the much bigger iOS selection.

the only games i play on my android phone are PAD and the recent terra battle so beside those i wouldn't know what to suggest :yeshrug

Yeah, my Android tablet was way more feature packed than my iPad, but going back to the iPad was awesome when I realized I could actually play games on it. I wish all developers made the same games for both, because it would make owning an Android device a no-brainer. But until that day, I'll be playing actual games on my underpowered, overly-costed walled garden horseshit device.

For games?  Yeah, it is.  They miss out on tons of stuff because Android owners are allergic to paying for stuff.  Certain companies have cracked the model that works there (it involves setting your price to free, doing shitloads of online checks, and adding in tons of IAP even over the iOS versions) and keep supporting the platform, others have just thrown up their hands and given up, and still others focus on countries like Japan who are less prone to stealing shit, not even arsing with releasing the English versions overseas that they already have translated.

Yeah, a friend of mine pointed out to me that Google doesn't do any real checking of people who want to sell through their store. Hackers can, for example, download Awesome Endless Runner Game, hack it, re-list it as Awesome Runner Game Free, and even make a similar company name to the original publisher.

If a user searches for "Awesome Endless Runner" and then sees both the real game and "Awesome Endless Runner Free" in the search results, they'll frequently grab that one even if the original is also free.  :maf

Android gaming has always been the pits. At first it was the severe fragmentation of handsets hindering development (still a problem in 2014, though less so) and now it's that no1pays.

You're old enough to have played better games, therefore you're too old to enjoy... No, wait.

Everything I've heard and seen about Destiny makes it seem a lot like Rage. Everything is great, the shooting, the graphics and art direction, music (less so in Rage, I guess) but the gamey game part, levels and objectives, is anaemic and incredibly repetitive. They even share a baffling finale and non-ending.
Oh and the loot delivery is ass backwards and reminds me of D3's goblin and golden chest farming near release. It's more efficient to sit in one spot and blindly fire into a cave than it is to fight challenging enemies, because of course those drop nothing and/or rubbish.

Much harder to control in the air, but on the ground it is fine.
I think at the moment it's just tricky using the 3DS analogs/buttons to spike opponents trying to recover - which leads to a more conservative gameplay that results in longer games.

On one hand, that means an easier time for newcomers. On the otherhand, it can be frustrated.

Wii U version will def. be the best version, but if your kids got multiple 3DSs they'll probably have a ton of fun with the Smash Run mode which is exclusive to 3DS (and limited to local MP.)
