Yeah, everybody talks about how the PS2 is the best library ever and I'm just like... ehh. I mean it was probably the best system of its gen, but at least for RPGs, the SNES and PS1 had much better libraries. PS2 was certainly better than what came after, though...
Nah, PS2 has the best rpg library imo. PS1/Snes have a handful of good stuff, but PS2 has like 3 dozen great rpgs, the best action games, the best music games, and the best weird as hell games, especially with imports.
PS1 is alright, very, very few PS1 rpgs still hold up. The loading is killer on so many. SNES is alright too and has some classics but most of the rpgs are pretty shallow and lack the depth of PS1 and beyond.
I want to think I own every rpg ever released in Japan from the PS1-era on, as its the genre I collect because I want to play them all one day. My PS2 library before it was sitting in boxes in storage was like the biggest library outside of PC digital gaming that I have. Backloggery tells me I have about 300 PS2 games and I'd wager at least half of them are good and still hold up. Also most of the PS1 rpgs that are dated these days have revamped more playable versions on PSP. Like Suikoden I & II on PS1 still hold up and are classics, but the PSP versions are even better and easily the definitive modern versions. Or Tactics Ogre, where the PSP version is amazing and the PS1 version feels dated trying to play it now. I really wish Xenogears got a PSP/Vita updated version, because it's one of my favorites but trying to play it today is shit because the game is slow and shitty to play.
I mean straight up, I'll never find tighter actions game than Shinobi, Devil May Cry 3, Zone of the Enders 2, MGS3 (well, MGS5 plays better but the story is terrible in that one, and MGS3 still has better boss fights). All of those still hold up if you pop them in right now. On the rpg side, stuff like Shadow Hearts 2, Front Mission 5, FFX or XII, DQVr, Makai Kingdom, Soul Nomad, etc.. still hold up fantastically.
But anyhow, I'm not into retro and nostalgia does very little for me. I like the PS2 because when I play those games I get enjoyment out of them not because of some voodoo nostalgia magic, but because I put them in and they still play as good as modern 2016 games and look and sound great to boot. I'm happy with PS2-era visuals for life. I mean that's what I got on PSP, and to a degree 3DS and even iOS stuff like Chaos Rings and I've been happy with those games visually.
