I was listening to some more versions of Doom E1M1 music, and this slower 3DO remix is pretty cool.

The 3DO versions had a soundtrack recorded by an actual band, rather than just being done in midi. That's about the only good thing about the 3DO version.

wtf they seriously had the 32x port of doom on the cover? :rofl :rofl
It was a major deal at the time. I even had that issue. PC at the times were generations ahead of console gaming and the possibility of having one of the biggest title of the era on a console was huge.

i store the snes port came out first but the 32x version was released a full year earlier. i just remember laughing at the time bc even my parents shitty 486 tandy could run the game better than these consoles.

Doom 32X was on a couple covers I found in the archive (Game Informer, Sega Visions, GamePro, etc.) as it was like the only launch title outside of Star Wars Arcade that wasn't (at least based on the reviews) garbage. And was like the biggest game overall at the time. Virtua Racing and stuff came out later.

Doom 32X was also the first console port, the Jaguar one came out a couple weeks later and until PS1 was like the only one even close to PC.

The funny thing was that the SNES port despite looking terrible probably actually is more accurate than the 32X version. :lol
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Official_versions_of_Doom#Consoles
Quote
The SNES version of Doom features all five of the PC version levels that were missing from the Atari Jaguar version, but is missing a different set of five levels instead, and, like the Sega 32X version, does not have any console exclusive levels. The levels included resemble the PC levels more so than other ports. This was also the only home console port of Doom released in the 1990s to feature all three of the original secret levels and boss levels from the PC version.
...
Randy Linden, the head programmer, created a new game engine called the Reality engine for the port. The game makes use of the Super FX powered GSU-2 chip
...
This version lacks the Spectre enemy (replaced with regular Demon monsters), though it does feature the Cyberdemon and Spider Mastermind boss monsters that the Atari Jaguar, Sega 32X, and 3DO versions lack.
...
This version of Doom features support for the SNES Mouse peripheral.
Quote
The 32X version of Doom was published and developed by Sega and was released on November 21, 1994.[11] It features 17 of the 18 levels from the first two episodes, but none from episode three. This version lacks multiplayer support, does not play in a full screen, and only has the front sprites for the monsters. 10 levels are missing from the original version (twice as many missing levels as any other version of the game). A DOS prompt shows up after the credits roll if the player finishes the game either using cheats or starting from any level other than the first level, locking up the game.[12] Similarly, the secret level cannot be accessed in these scenarios. Due to the lack of the third episode, the BFG 9000 can only be obtained through the use of cheats. Due to extremely poor use of the Mega Drive/Genesis YM2612 sound chip, this version's soundtrack is noticeably inferior to that of other versions, and many of the sound effects are missing. As with most mid-90s console ports, the levels come from the Atari Jaguar version. This version does not feature the Cyberdemon, the Spider Mastermind, or the Spectre. There is a level select option that allows the player to start on any of the first fifteen levels, although there is no way to save the game or settings.
Quote
[The 3DO] version runs in a small screen at a low frame rate, though it includes the option to shrink the screen size further, which allows the game to run faster and smoother. It lacks some effects found in other versions but has an updated soundtrack that features remixed and original music. The Cyberdemon and Spider Mastermind are missing, though the Spectre (which is absent from the Jaguar, SNES, and 32X versions) is included. The 3DO version was originally a more ambitious project, intended to surpass the PC version, but after it was mired in development hell for two years, the programmer was contracted to create a basic port in ten weeks.

Run on emulators but whatever:

Wolf 3D had a similar but weirder port history:

Quote
*Here's the genealogy of that sentence - PC begat SNES, SNES begat Mac, Mac begat 3DO, 3DO begat IIGS, IIGS begat STe. Five descending generations from the PC original.
Quote
The first official port was for Super Nintendo, and was developed in-house by id Software. Imagineer, the SNES version's publisher, had originally hired another contractor to develop the port, but nine months passed and the contractor could not be contacted, forcing id Software to stop all work on their current project, Doom, and develop it by themselves, from scratch, in only three weeks.
Quote
The Macintosh port, which was alternately titled, Wolfenstein 3D: First Encounter, Second Encounter, or Third Encounter, based on whether you were playing the shareware demo, the mail-ordered full version, or the retail-boxed full version, was ported and distributed by MacPlay, a division of Interplay Productions. The Macintosh version is based on the SNES version, but restores the blood, the dogs, and most importantly, Hitler and his Nazis. The same 30 levels as the Super Nintendo version are present, as are the two new weapons and the automap feature, but the graphics and sounds have been given quite an overhaul. All graphics are now twice the size as their PC versions, with a much greater attention to detail. The sounds are of vastly higher quality, with guards now speaking proper German instead of the roughly-translated "Mein leben!" from the original game. There is one shortcoming, though, in that the enemy sprites no longer have rotations, so enemies are always facing forward, removing the ability to sneak up behind unaware guards. Also, despite the addition of separate keys for strafing left and right, it is not possible to circle-strafe, as the controls behave oddly when both a strafing and turning key are pressed. The First Encounter (the shareware demo) includes only the first three levels, ending when first boss Hans Grosse is killed. The Second Encounter provides all 30 levels from the SNES version of the game, while The Third Encounter includes not only those, but also all 60 of the PC version's levels in their entirety, as well as improved support for third-party level packs, like Laz Rojas' Astrostein series. The music in the Mac port is all new, composed by Interplay's resident musician Brian Luzietti, and has nothing to do with Bobby Prince's original compositions - not even the Nazi anthem is present. (Random side-note: the Mac version was ported back to the PC, entitled Macenstein 3D SDL - it contains the 30-level Second Encounter episode and all of the graphic and sound improvements from the Mac version, just running in the PC version's engine in SDL.)

The Atari Jaguar's port was based on the Macintosh Second Encounter version, with 30 levels and the high-resolution wall tiles and enemy sprites. It was developed in-house by id Software, as a "test" to determine if the Jaguar had enough horsepower to run a Doom-like game. The Jaguar version actually contains brand new weapon sprites, obviously patterned after Doom's but with BJ Blazkowicz's grey shirt sleeves instead of the Doomguy's flesh-toned rubber gloves. It is one of the few official ports to retain Bobby Prince's original music, slightly remixed to play on the Jaguar's sound hardware, and the sound effects are mostly from the SNES version, though the guards have gone back to speaking German instead of English. There are actually some major gameplay changes to this version, too. The only on-screen HUD elements are health, ammo, and keys. With no score display, treasures would have otherwise become worthless, so they now count as bonus health, allowing you a maximum of 200. The bullet weapons now fire much faster, with the MP-40 firing roughly as fast as Doom's chaingun, and the chaingun now firing nearly twice as fast as before. Since this is based on the SNES and Mac versions, there are backpacks lying around that will allow you to hold up to 300 bullets. Also, the upgrade rule from the SNES version applies here as well: the MP-40 and Chaingun are permanent upgrades to the pistol, so you are no longer able to switch back to them (or the knife, unless you're completely out of ammo) once you have a better gun. The Rocket Launcher and Flamethrower are both selectable by pressing the Jaguar's Option button. The automap is still available, accessible with one of the numeric pad buttons. Finally, this is the only console-based Wolfenstein port (until the Xbox version) to have a mid-level save, accessible by pressing the numbers 1, 2, or 3 on the Jaguar's numeric pad.

The 3DO port was developed by LogicWare and published by Interplay Productions, and was based on the Macintosh Third Encounter version, so it includes the 30 SNES/Mac levels as well as all six PC version episodes. In addition to the high-quality Mac textures, sprites, and sound effects, the 3DO port contains all new synth-orchestrated CD music by Interplay's Brian Luzietti (who also composed for the Descent games), which outside of the title theme from the Mac version, is entirely new and specifically composed for this version. In my opinion, it's probably the best version of the soundtrack for thematic purposes, even though it is missing Horst Wessel Lied (and, in all honesty, makes the game sound a bit like an '80s action flick in the process, making it all the more awesome). This version was also released in Japan, and is the only version where the status bar labels are translated.

You can fix that by adjusting the screen size!

Wish I could find the video where the guy shrank it as far as possible.

Framerate and pixelation of the SNES version sucks but it is legitimately impressive to see that running on an SNES and also more complete than the other ports of the time. One of my favs just due to the sheer wizardry it took to make it run on an SNES.

Best port is DOOM64 though. Hands-down the best console version even if its completely different. Just remember to boost the brightness all the way up, lol.

The New Nintendo 3DS is getting its cheapest price yet on Black Friday.

Nintendo will be releasing two new limited edition versions of the handheld — one black, one white — which will both be available on November 25th for $99.99. That makes it just slightly more expensive than the $79.99 Nintendo 2DS, which is missing features like glasses-free 3D visuals, and half the price of the larger New Nintendo 3DS XL. Both of the new limited edition variants feature a slick and subtle Mushroom Kingdom print.

The only content that doesnt have matchmaking afaik:

- Raids
- Nightfalls (difficult versions of Strikes that yield high light items)
- Trials of Osiris (competitive 3v3 elimination mode that yields rewards at certain wins; every Fri-Mon before reset)
- Patrols (this is just the open-ended fuckall mode)
- Story Missions
- Legacy content (Prison of Elders; Challenge of the Elders; old Raids)

There are third party resources for finding people, but due to this nature you can either get chill as fuck people or straight dickheads.

Again, stressing that it can be boring solo, but I still enjoy jumping on to do some PVP and Strikes to try and get some good rolled gear.

I picked up:

Forza Horizon 3 PC (still not ready to buy an Xbox One, maybe in 2017)
Quantum Break PC
Dirty Rally
AC Syndicate
Captain Toad Tracker
Super Smash Bros Wii U
Yoshi's Wooly World
Hyper Light Drifter
Abzu
Firewatch
Bound
Momodora
Enter the Gungeon
The Flame in Flood
Song of the Deep (Because Insomniac)
A Golden Wake (Because $2 and 1920s)
Planetary Annihilation Titans (Because $5 and been wanting to try PA someday when it was cheap enough)
Sunset Overdrive for when I get an Xbox One someday (Because $10)
Rare Replay for when I get an Xbox One someday (Because $15)
PS4 Camera for when I get a PS VR someday when it's actually in stock (was a good price)

Would've gotten Kirby Robobo but the price changed by the time I went to look at it.
I already paid off FFXV a half year ago, so that's the final hurrah of gaming purchases for 2016 for me outside The Last Guardian and maybe Dark Souls 3 PC in the winter steam sale if it gets to something a little cheaper or if PS VR is ever in stock, but I figure that's not happening until after the holidays.

But I do try to play everything I buy for at least like 30 mins to try it out, and then stick with the few that are really good.  I wish there was a modern PC rental thing like Redbox where you could just rent games for $5 for a couple hours and see if you like it enough to buy.

I feel...okay...with my purchases this weekend (GTA V, DOOM, using a bunch of Humble Credit to get Singularity for $3 since I wanted to play it back when it first came out, stopping myself from almost paying $10 for Prototype 2 because I assumed it was $5....lol Activision pricing) except I did make what could be a huge mistake. Homefront: The Revolution was $13, $17 with all the season pass and garbage, and I got swept up like two weeks ago in the months later "hey, this game is actually pretty good and the jank is sorta adorable*" stuff that started after Tom Chick gave it four stars. (Same as Doom! And four times as many stars as No Man's Sky!) Then some other people started revisiting it and making it sound fun. And it seemed way out of line with the really weirdly jaded coverage that was sorta best shown by Austin at GiantBomb (but he wasn't the only one) gave it at launch where it seemed like they were looking for reasons to hate and mock everything before even playing it. It was a bit in the Quick Look where like Vinny asked about stuff and Austin immediately dismissed it as worst thing ever, but somewhere else I watched a video about (Polygon?), and all the stuff they were making fun of as if serious was like seemingly Saints Row/Borderlands "tongue-in-cheek" making light of the source material stuff. Especially the USA firework gun.

I guess it also ran like garbage, had all kinds of missions bugs and crashed constantly on consoles at release.

There better be Paddy's Pub and other Always Sunny references in this game though. Or else, what's the point.

*getting comparisons to Dead Island/Dying Light and a Eurojanked Far Cry 3
