Anyone play The Division or any of the new(ish) Tom Clancy games?
There's a sale on the PS Store and most are 25-50% off.

Thinking about picking up Siege...

Went to OKC to meet up with slime at Super Bitcon [retro game convention], but the fairgrounds were really messed up from storms the night before [lots of downed trees and power lines, no electricity, some damage to buildings], so they ended up cancelling it for the day. Still, I did manage to snag a few OG Xbox games from a few places around town:

-Dead or Alixe: Xtreme Beach Volleyball
-Otogi
-Brute Force
-Mechassault
-Metal Dungeon

NICE!

:bow OG XBOX :bow2

My pick-ups from the convention:
  • Contra - NES
  • Game Genies - NES
  • Journey to Silius - NES
  • Kid Niki: Radical Ninja - NES
  • River City Ransom - NES
  • Tombs and Treasures - NES
  • Xexyz - NES
  • Earthworm Jim - SNES
  • Final Fight 2 - SNES
  • Lester the Unlikely - SNES
  • Robotrek - SNES
  • Shadowrun - SNES
  • Star Ocean - SNES
  • Tales of Phantasia - SNES
  • Dragon Warrior: Torneko - PS1
  • Point Blank - PS1
  • Point Blank 3 - PS1
  • 40 Winks - N64
  • Flying Dragon - N64
  • Legend of Zelda: Master Quest - N64
  • Mortal Kombat 4 - N64
  • NFL Blitz 2000 - N64

i have it too because of course i do :-*

doesn't it not even have Xbox Live co-op support? just like DLC or something. Even though it came out like two years late or some shit because of working on Freelancer at the same.

Blood Wake is my favorite Microsoft Game Studios early Xbox product, even if I hear otherwise I'm still convinced it's a water effect demo that was turned into a game over like three months of planning

Azurik is my second favorite

so much beautiful first party jank on there :lawd

even Sega acted like it was Sega platform to put their own first party jank on

but then there was Crimson Skies :gladbron

Microsoft should give me a Ubisoft sized studio and unmarked non-sequential cash money and I'll make them a new Crimson Skies game with special Scorpio/PC features that make PS4 look like dog shit. Bidding starts at $250 million.

Also, might they have access to the source code for this: http://store.steampowered.com/app/42500
And might as well throw in this too as I think it also got an XBLA release: http://store.steampowered.com/app/91100

I think that's why they bought Rare in hopes of getting that audience...except Rare's immediate pipeline being Star Fox Adventures, Grabbed by the Ghoulies, Conker, Perfect Dark Zero and Kameo showed why Nintendo didn't care about selling them off to a competitor instead of acquiring them.

(Nintendo had an option to buy the 51% of Rare they didn't own but turned it down, then Activision and Microsoft went bidding on the whole shebang but Kotick probably wasn't going to pay $500 million for them like MS did.)

I get the Rare hate, especially since their recent output in the last ~16 years has been mediocre but Rare was widely considered one of the biggest names in the late 90's console market. Their N64 and SNES output literally revolutionized genres and their tech was nearly unmatched on their respective platforms. Even back in the 8-bit days as Ultimate Play the Game, they created Knight Lore, one of the most influential British games of all time. These guys were widely respected for very good reasons.

While it's easy to look back on the Xbox days and wonder just why Microsoft bought them out, at the time Rare was considered a proverbial goldmine with over 48 million in sales on the N64 and SNES. Microsoft was also entering the console industry as a relative newcomer and their M.O. was to clone and compete with Sony and Nintendo. Rare was the easy solution and purchase for going toe-to-toe with Nintendo.

newcomer? rare has been making console games for a long as I've been alive. that part of why I shit-talk them so much, bc i played a lot of their early games and didn't like them at all (except for wizards and warriors, but whatev). they made a lot of stuff and a lot of it was derivative and a lot of it was experimental, but i pretty much always found their stuff frustrating and boring.

i know coming off the n64 they were huge, second only to nintendo, but i still think a huge part of their success was that they had almost no real competition in the platform. had they been on Playstation I don't think they would've sold anywhere near as many games as they did with nintendo.

They were widely respected when video games lived in a club house and, accordingly, it was easy for glee clubs to drone opinion into truth. Watching the tree house fall down and shatter the lies has been an exquisite experience.

I'm probably going to pick up The Division, as my son bought it and doesn't want to play it, but also doesn't want to sell it. It's basically Destiny in NYC after a plague event. Trying to solo stuff is frustrating, but the PS4 community around it seems to supply pick up partners pretty easily.

Plus B&K Nuts and Bolts is one of the greatest construction games ever. The ability to craft various vehicles from gradually unlocked parts is just an amazing accomplishment, and how it didn't end up doing well is forever-a-mystery to me.

I meant that Microsoft was the newcomer in the console space, not Rare. I know MS was publishing games for a while by that point (Midtown Madness, Crimson Skies, and Close Combat were so good!) but the console space was completely different and far more lucrative at the time.

 :badass

~'95 to '05 were the most profitable years for the console game industry for both platforms and games. 3 of the best selling platforms of all time were actively sold during those years (:bow PS1/PS2 :bow2) and game budgets/teams were still manageable. Rare made their biggest games during that time period and became a globally recognized AAA developer.

That looks like it could be cool. But it also looks like it could be an indie game that remains in development forever made by a small group of developers who had all their formative experiences in shadow of the colossus and wind waker, so who knows.

I'm too jaded.

I see yet another "indie" team (with a global publisher) relying on minimalist yet vibrant environments to distract you from the lack of gameplay mechanics other than navigation and wrapping it all an ambiguous story that tries hard to make "poignant" commentary on the human condition without really addressing the issue at face value. Then they'll ask $40 for their 3 hour "experience" because making games with 4 people somehow manages to cost nearly as much as one with a team of hundreds.

Yeah, I'm good. It'll be on PS+ in two months anyways.

I've said it before, but I'd think a lot higher of u.s. indie games if they weren't all trying to recreate journey it or old games they played in childhood. even if I really enjoy a game (like shovel Knight) there's just something weird about making something so derivative.

That's what AAA devs bang out a lot though. I don't know why it bothers people with indies so much, but I suspect production values help mask core similarities between games.

shovel knight certainly nails what it's going for, but what its going for is pretty uninteresting tbh. it is a mismash of memorable parts from various nes action games jammed into a value package (too many levels that are all too long, too many dialog boxes, too much of anything really) for players who think the original games its referencing are outdated and/or have 'bad game design' because they are too hard.  also lots of comedy writing from people who respond "well played, sir" to puns probably. Volgarr is a much better example of an american-made nostalgia sidescroller (even if the graphics in that game leave a great deal to be desired).

when I think for successful western indie games I think of stuff like Spelunky and Binding of Isaac, which, while they do reference older games that were obviously important to the creators, they also made it into something interesting that isn't just a re-tread of the same old shit with some memes plastered on top (disclaimer: isaac still plasters memes on top, but it is on top of something interesting). I havent played night in the woods but it seems more like a visual novel with some minigames added in for effect, which is at least making an effort beyond regurgitating classics with training wheels and fancier chiptune music.

I really enjoyed Shovel Knight, but it wore on me by the end in ways that Mega Man never did. It's not Meat Boy or anything, but there's just a little edge of that kind of gameplay in the latter half and I don't care for it.

Too old for that shit / 10.

I don't remember which bundle group it was, maybe humble bundle, but recently there was a special deal for 10 games and maybe four or five of them were variations on flow.

I was in my second company in the game industry when Warcraft 2 hit hard. The next year I was looking at PC Gamer or something, and there were dozens of RTS games in development plan for publishing soon. Most companies want to go for the safe money. Unfortunately, there is no such thing. Nobody can still win by doing exactly the same thing that somebody did better before them.

I wonder if that can happen, if they're interested in more Japanese studios. They expanded to eat EIDOS because they wanted western distribution and publishing, and they got Crystal Dynamics because EIDOS had /just/ purchased CD. I honestly think S-E is mainly interested in making more Final Fantasy games and the occasional movie. The last time they took chances with non-RPGs, they recoiled like a snail's eye stalk.
