Messed around with the SNES Classic for about 30 mins trying various games before being over it. Seems like a solid emu machine, but doesn't really feel like anything new beyond the years of SNES emu and VC. At least if Switch freaking had VC it'd be nice to play some of these portable, but...

Seems about right. I bought one last year and I have only spent about an hour with it.

I play it quite a bit and am glad I never have to think about getting the essentials for any other machine again, as long as USB and HDMI are common. VC has been a joke without BC, a constantly crappier output after each reboot and pricings from a decade ago.

Yes, but it's great to have a little machine available. Same with my NES Classic (both hacked to have a ton of games)

Also the NES/SNES Classics are targeted more towards 30-40 year olds who haven't played games since high school/college who just want a quick and easy way to play some of the major games they remember.  They're not really meant for nerds like us who never stopped playing these games, either through emulation or still having the original systems around.

that makes me think of those hotels that would have a controller plugged into the TV and you could play games, almost always SNES, off the TV for a fee, i think like the first hour was always cheaper or sometimes free with the room, so i only ever played about an hour

AND THAT reminds me that once we stayed at a Howard Johnson in part because they had a free Game Gear with Sonic and something else you got overnight, of course, it was a Game Gear so i was only able to play about an hour

those controllers were probably my first experience with Nintendo's patent on the d-pad, because they were all unofficial controllers and i was like "wtf is up with this shit" especially if SFII was on the thing

lot of my friends were late to the SNES so didn't have to put up with their knockoff controller garbage for player two until a bit later

So I see the NES classic is re-stocked at some Targets near me and Gamestop.com has them online for a little more with shipping. I read it has a new kernel and the "Reset Button Controller Hack" doesn't work as well as certain other hack stuff having issues. Should I still pick one up and expect this to be sorted out soon? Don't really want to get one unless I can hack it down the line and add more games. Will hack my SNES mini at the same time when I'm not lazy so both have a bunch of stuff.

Welp, drove to the local Target that the stock tracker said was in stock and they told me they sold their last NES classic like 3 hours ago  :'(
I've never had any luck with videogames at B&N in my city. Way too many videogame nerds with money in OC.
Said fuck it and bought from Gamestop (ewww) with the extra $8 shipping.

I just got one and god dammit i forgot about the stupid controller cord length. it's seriously two feet long like who the fuck would ever approve that what the fuck is your fucking problem

anyways I hope I can hack it because I need some more good games on it. there's a bunch of classics but some stuff like pacman are wtf and having Castlevania 1 and 2 but not 3 is a no.

So I dont know where you find this info but

a) yes you can still hack them

b) yes its stupid fucking easy you are stupid as fuck if you cant do it

c) the reset combo is down+select by default but you can change it to whatever you want

d) compatibility for both emulators (snes/nes) is roughly 80-90% of the library

Seems like there's some issues with the new kernel? Like nothing totally stopping it but also seems like they'll need to update the hack for the newer models to get everything working right again.

Wrong Hakchi. Look up Hakchi CE

The long-winded reason:

The new NES Classics are actually using the SNES Classic's hardware (like, chips and shit). So while its a NES Classic, internally Hakchi thinks its a SNES Classic so.... yea, things get weird

TLDR use Hakchi CE (by Team Shinkansen) and you will be fine.

Cluster has pretty much abandoned development on his Hakchi so I wouldnt worry about that version anymore.

Here is a Google Document I have helped in updating and maintaning for SNES Classic and any patches / updates you need for games.

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/12HKfz4ZQBy6Ip5awvh8t2aV5cVswYlnsdKxn9xoIW2Y/edit#gid=2014317767

Here is a similiar sheet for NES Classic that I have zero part in

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1QTRTPODrhE5X55EciFsiQZaa-xVGlSD73Rt26Nd2rk0/edit#gid=0

These are for the built-in emulators. You can use Retroarch if you want to turn your Classic into yet another Raspberry Pi

Cool. I looked through the SNES one and kinda bummed that out of the few games with issues are some of the bigger deal rpgs. Seiken Denstsu 3, Lufia II, and Ogre Battle are all classics I've never got around to playing and wouldn't mind playing at some point. All seem playable though, just some issues.

Yes, they are all very playable. Some minor blemishes but I have played all three and they are perfectly playable.

If it absolutely bugs you, you can run them via Retroarch, or just not add them at all.

Why not use Retroarch? The SNES emulator has been proven to have less input lag than Retroarch itself. You can also take advantage of the Classic's save state / rewind feature even on added games.

I'm not sure if this is the case with the NES Classic's built in emulator, but it works perfectly fine for me and any input lag may be the result of your TV's settings.

Going through all the endgame stuff in God of War. Not as annoying or as grindy as I thought it would be. Enjoying Muspelheim and Valkyrie fights. Dreading Niphelheim however.

Also bought Hollow Knight on Switch. I can see this game going places.

Oh my god. X-com: Enemy Unknown/Within spoilers: The Newfoundland Mission/Harbor. OMG. How the fuck do they expect you to beat that so early in the game? :lol :lol :lol :lol

Suffice it to say, after like 10+ attempts, reloading my save. Getting grenades, rockets, and beam weapons and the shredder ammo for the snipers, I was able to get past the extraction with NO casualties in my group. 0. Nada. Zip.

I'm literally jumping up and down out of pure excitement on beating this "impossible" mission first-time out. :lol Supposedly, if you replay the game, it's random and comes way later in the game which makes it easier.

Now I know for sure I need to get the Plasma guns researched ASAP. :lol

I kind of want to start playing Warframe. I’ve been thinking about it for a while but just never sit down and do so. There’s always other games I’m working on finishing up.

But I bought the mega platinum pack on steam during a price error like a year ago for $8 so I probably should boot it up sometime.

It's been my inbetweener, go-to game when I don't have anything big on the agenda.  Not sure how/if they changed up the introductory levels, but this game has so much going on, it can be extremely convoluted with hardly any guidance.  But it can still be picked up quickly, and rip through some levels for a quick sesh.

A fun mish mash of Vanquish and Phantasy Star Online.

Got my NES mini and lasted less than my 1 hour with SNES mini. Like there are a few games that still kinda hold up, but most of these games are waaaaaaaaaaay too dated af and not fun for more than 2-3 mins for nostalgia. Also while I'm cool with the SNES controllers in the SNES mini (though imo they don't compare to modern controllers like Saturn pad or even DS4 for 2d gaming), I haven't touched a NES controller in 20+ years and this is probably blasphemy but I think it's a pretty shitty controller. The hard angles on the corners make it uncomfortable and it's not like the d-pad or buttons are particularly great or anything.

Like the SNES mini, once loaded with roms and with a wifi controller, is probably a solid emu box for some old-school 16-bit rpgs and stuff like mario allstars and super punchout, super metroid, f-zero, yoshi's island, etc...although lacking some of the modern emulator quality of life stuff like speed up. Don't mind the $70-80 or so it cost me.

But the NES mini? Yeaaaah, I definitely feel kinda ripped off at like $70-80 after shipping. Not even sure if I wanna bother dumping roms because I don't really have any interest in playing old ass 8-bit games. Same with buying a 2nd wifi controller, dunno. This was definitely a nostalgia shelf-life box.

Anyhow, I've never been particularly into retro gaming so maybe I'm just being all weird here.

Grabbed some PS2 RPGs during the PSN mid-year sale:

-Okage: Shadow King
-Wild Arms 3
-Rogue Galaxy
-Dark Cloud 2

Only cost about $15 for all four.

If you played any game that has grinding, it's basically just that. I like how they announce it as some sort of roguelike thing you can keep coming back to, but it's basically just 5 connected rooms with the travel space between them swapped for 1 of the 4 traps. You've basically seen everything it has to offer after the first run, but you gotta grind them mist echoes for that sweet platinum trophy.

Not necessarily a save scum if you're wanting to keep your only team that's leveled alive. :yeshrug

That said, I'm getting fucked over sideways with money. I have like 200 in the bank, building a Satellite Array (or whatever the upgrade is called) and can't build more Satellites. So I have like 2-3 panicked nations, my aircrafts aren't upgraded (as my research fell behind slightly) and the covert rebel group has started to show up. :lol :'(

So surprisingly playing the NES Mini has made me enjoy the SNES Mini much, much more. I still can't enjoy playing NES games (outside like Mario 1-3) for more than like 5 mins before wanting to bail. But then I boot up the SNES Mini and play their 16-bit upgrade sequel and they're way more fun. Really enjoying replaying Super Mario RPG and Yoshi's Island.

I don't remember if I ever tried Ghouls N' Ghosts before SNES-era, but playing the NES one, wowwww that game sure runs like shit. Surprised anyone could beat it like that. Even Super Ghouls N' Ghost is just alright and not one of my favorites in the series, I think the PSP one probably is and then the Arcade game.

NES games can get a little wonky if they go beyond platforming, I guess. I didn't understand Zelda 2 back in the day, but now I sat down with it on NES Mini and had a really good time. For pure 2D action games, NES library is excellent. Power Blade, Shadow of the Ninja, Shatterhand, Dragon Fighter, Panic Restaurant, Kick Master, Isolated Warrior being some of the slightly lesser known ones. KID and Natsume were on fire that era.

OG Contra is still great.

Yeah, one thing I was surprised about was how well NES Contra controls and plays for an 8-bit game. Feels just as good as a 16-bit one, just with less impressive visuals.

But playing Double Dragon II or Ninja Gaiden NES...yeah, no.
