I am kinda expecting full 'base' BC, but nothing will be able to really take advantage of SSD speed increase due to way they were designed.

SSD/NVMe etc in PC will hopefully start being more utilized soon.

Xbox Series X runs all Xbox One games out of the box..

It runs about 400/500 360 games

And about 30/40 xbox titles?

I know what Ill pick

Ps5 is a joke if you cant play your digital ps4 games...

It's sounding like Xbox might turn into my main system. Get a PS5 somewhere down the line for the exclusives.

Sexbox has full BC with Xbone, and any BC comparability Xbone had software wise will be the same with the Sexbox.

Of course, Sony loves their legacy so much, maybe they'll release a PS2 classic console that sucks more ass than the PS Classic.   :lol

MS have been super cagey in how they talked about that (what a shock, I know :lol ). Their general PR has been "yeah it just works" but when you start digging it's not that straightforward:

https://www.gamespot.com/articles/xbox-series-x-phil-spencer-discusses-how-tons-of-g/1100-6473541/

Quote
"I'm trying it. It's in active development, sometimes it reboots. Not all the games today are completely compatible. We're working through our list of approved games on it. You can see what I'm playing; there's tons of games that work," Spencer said.

https://news.xbox.com/en-us/2020/02/24/what-you-can-expect-next-generation-gaming/
Four generations of gaming: Our commitment to compatibility means existing Xbox One games, including backward-compatible Xbox 360 and original Xbox games, look and play better than ever before. Your favorite games, including titles in Xbox Game Pass, benefit from steadier framerates, faster load times and improved resolution and visual fidelity – all with no developer work required. Your Xbox One gaming accessories also come forward with you.

This is official PR on their main website,  it would be a disaster if they wouldn't deliver that now.

I mean it's pretty obvious that MS made the Xbox One with compatibility in mind like Windows upgrades.

Sony obviously did not and figured "hey since PS4 and PS5 are essentially custom PC boxes, everything PS4 should just run on PS5, right?" and just like when you try to run 15 year old PC games on a modern super fast computer, a lot of times it just works fine, but some games don't and have issues. So Sony is going through and patching the issues one by one on a per game basis, but that takes a lot of time/manpower so good luck on all of them, they'd essentially be doing what GOG.com is doing.

that being said, I'd expect it to go like running most 2000-2010 era games on your PC right now. Most should run fine. I'd be surprised if the compatibility is < 75% of the entire library from launch.

At launch, PlayStation 5 will play "almost all" of the top 100 most-played PlayStation 4 games via its in-built backwards compatibility support.

Close to 100 games at launch is what is expected.

I have to imagine that there will be some exceptions made for yearly sports games lol. Though I'd have a good laugh if 20% of the backwards compatible games was various EA Sports titles of the last 4 years.

side note: I also wonder how this will affect games that are launching now and after. Like they are being released ever so closer to the PS5. Would titles like Persona 5 Royal and Doom Eternal be backwards compatible? Cause yeah they aren't top 100 as of right now, but probably titles that people would "expect" would have a larger focus when making select titles b/c.

100 games are the ones they're testing and making sure work. I'm pretty sure they aren't even testing some weaboo game.

It really depends on if they choose which ones you can play. Or if you can stick any PS4 disc in and it'll play, but some might not work right. If it's the later I still think it'll be most of them working. I don't know if anyone remembers, but that's how PS2 BC was on early PS3. I remember compability lists and having to run certain games in safe mode because not everything works automatic.

The 80GB model removed the EE and emulated it on the Cell. Then when they moved to the 40/80/160 setup on 65nm they took out the GS too. Wiki says August 2007 for the first, August 2008 for the latter.

I'm not sure they ever really built a PS2 emulator for the PS3.

https://blog.us.playstation.com/2020/03/18/unveiling-new-details-of-playstation-5-hardware-technical-specs/

UPDATE: A quick update on backward compatibility – With all of the amazing games in PS4’s catalog, we’ve devoted significant efforts to enable our fans to play their favorites on PS5. We believe that the overwhelming majority of the 4,000+ PS4 titles will be playable on PS5.

We’re expecting backward compatible titles will run at a boosted frequency on PS5 so that they can benefit from higher or more stable frame rates and potentially higher resolutions. We’re currently evaluating games on a title-by-title basis to spot any issues that need adjustment from the original software developers.

In his presentation, Mark Cerny provided a snapshot into the Top 100 most-played PS4 titles, demonstrating how well our backward compatibility efforts are going. We have already tested hundreds of titles and are preparing to test thousands more as we move toward launch. We will provide updates on backward compatibility, along with much more PS5 news, in the months ahead. Stay tuned!

(still weirdly vague though)

Sounds good, and yeah pretty much full auto BC for PS4 games except some might have funky compatibility glitches which they will iron out on a case by case basis for popular games. Basically what I thought.

I remember that the original Sin had a memory leak and you had to stare to the loading screen for like 20 minutes until it finally loaded.
They later patched it but not everyone had internet back then or knew the patch existed.  :doge

Papa Nier or we riot.

A father doing anything to save his daughter and the consequences of that is A LOT more riveting than an older brother saving his sister.

I also loved the voicework for Papa Nier. It's going to be hard playing as Love Brother but I'm gonna give it a try.
