Had a fantastic day out in Kyoto with an old co-worker from my 2nd company in the game industry. Both of us are currently out of dev; he's really-really out, as he's gone into academia, teaching game dev at a 4-year university. We rolled around Kyoto enjoying the local sights and food, and hooch. It was a great day, and my feet are really tired now. I love Kyoto as a wandering spot, and it was great to catch up and compare notes on post-developer lifestyle.

IIRC, the composer of "Amazing Grace" made money in the slave trade so there is some discussion that the themes you perceive are individual expressions, H. Because religion dominated so much of society, it provided cover for people to express themselves individually.

That said in Christianity humans are wretches without the grace of god. Abhor that position if you want, but it's going to permeate Christian-inspired work and there's a lot of Christian-inspired work worth embracing.

You don't want to be one of the people they get to write the introductions to the books / plays of flaming commies I like to read where they do embarrassing mental gymnastics to justify the work but shame the ideas that inspired it. They go hand in hand.

One of the few cool things about church was seeing a white person randomly show up and be pleasantly shocked at how the hymns were sung. Then we'd go up to them like "well how do you guys sing them at your church?" And then they'd nervously smile and sing us the noise of their people.

It's really hard to hate on old gospel songs (for non-sentimental reasons) considering they're the basis for most American music.

Amazing Grace has a long history in the civil rights movement. Maybe this is because I'm from the south, but it's definitely a huge proponent in our culture. It's basically seen as the black anthem down here.

This is why it's a bad song and why I don't understand why anyone would sing it. Different strokes though. From the individualistic point of view, I can buy it, if you actually felt you were a wretch in the past. But for most people? I don't think so. As for the historicity of the song, while telling, it doesn't account for the popularity of a song that basically discounts ones humanity without god's light. What had me bring this up, is watching something on tv, and seeing them display children while "a wretch like me" played. Not sure how anyone can really defend it. Bad song.

Back packers tend to have the worst views on women. I actually think the simplistic direct nature of "girl let me nut in your face" - which you might hear in a southern or mainstream rap song - is more respectful of women than the "be my sub-servant black queen, cook my meals, and don't dress like a slut" bullshit you'll more typically hear from a back packer.
