Just got called a 'star performer' in my annual review, not a single complaint. Yes, this is the same company that almost fired me 2 years ago. I'm just baffled all the time now.

On the other hand, they flat-out admitted to me that management grades on a curve determined by their budget. If they don't have much cash to dole out, they give out low scores on these assessments.

I would implore you, as a friend, to not hang around that person for your own safety's sake. I have a cousin involved in illegal activity who's been doing quite well for himself. As a kid I wasn't allowed to hang out or barely talk to him, and he's not allowed at family events. We've talked a few times in the last 5 years now that I'm an adult, but there's no fucking way I'll hang out with him.
