I've had a rough day. My wife got hit by a car crossing a street in downtown Seattle this morning on her way to work. We spent the whole day in OB Triage at the hospital. The baby is totally fine. My wife's back is really sore, but otherwise she is fine. She's asleep in the bedroom, and I'm still trying to calm down. We got really lucky.

The driver of the SUV took a free turn while she was halfway in the crosswalk. Hit her in the back, protecting the baby. The guy apparently stopped and made sure she was alright while the cops and fire department showed up.

Been having some car problems lately. Wednesday afternoon after work, my wife says that it feels like a tire is losing air and she happens to be right near the car dealer/service center we go to. Tires are fine, but there's a major oil leak problem.

So we bring the car in the next day and ask them to contact my father, since I'm gonna be at work and my wife's English still isn't so great. I'm too busy to even check my messages at work, and while waiting for the train afterwards am then flooded with text messages like "THE CAR IS DEAD!!" and "$4200 TO FIX EVERYTHING!!," then an apology from the service department.

This is a 22 year-old Honda Accord, so it doesn't really seem worth it. Problem is, we don't really have the money to comfortably pay for a new car. (Dirty poor, etc. etc.)

A used car would be fine, but my parents are worried something will happen with it and don't want us to go that route. Plus we all worry about car accidents, since the car has no airbags and has had brake issues in the past. So they're gonna help us pay for a 2012 Honda Fit. Will be nice to have a new car after a decade with old and/or shitty ones!

that depends on his credit. With great credit he can get a brand new car for a negligible amount more than a slightly used one.

I'd find out specifically what is wrong with it and have someone you trust look it over. $4200 bucks at a dealership can probably be done for a couple hundred and a few six packs if you have friends/family that are knowledgeable about cars.

This will be the first new car I've ever owned. Got two hand-me-downs when I was a teenager and bought a used lil' k-car when I was in Japan. When we moved back to the States, we didn't have shit for cash and my Grandmother gave us her old Accord, since she rarely ever used it. It lasted for over three years, so I can't complain.

Anyway Fits are cheap enough as-is and there's not going to be much of a difference with a used model. We also don't have the time to be looking for the right used car in the right condition and then getting it inspected...we need to get another car ASAP and my folks want us to have a new one.

Well, in this case, it's my parents offering to help with the car payments (really at this time, it's them paying for like 90% of the monthly payments) and my Dad being firm about getting a new car. We don't want to go through more problems, and with a new model it will be covered by the warranty for 3-4 years if shit does happen.

My wife is the one driving most of the time and my parents are pretty worried about her. It would probably be different if it were my ass driving around.

Nah, these guys are trustworthy...that's why we keep going back to them. They've fixed a lot shit cheap and have also waived fees when we've brought the car in before. There's a large amount of problems with the car and we've kept it going for as long as we can. Despite being 22 years old, the car only has like 55,000 miles.

I don't remember everything off the top of my head, but there's problems with the ignition, the starter, the brakes, the axle rods, oil leaks, and more, plus minor stuff like the wiper fluid system no longer working.

My cars wiper fluid runs out on a regular basis, my ac is broke (and I live in fucking texas, imagine summer months), my car has trouble starting regularly, I swear I have to buy at least two battery's a year and the battery I bought 6 months ago is already shot, the alternator seems to need fixing, last summer the car just TURNED OFF EXPLICITLY IN THE MIDDLE OF STREET though it was quite low on gas, it's a bumpy ride, someone broke my drink holders when I was away for college so now in order to hold drinks I have to put them on the ground or put it behind me so my back/butt holds it in place without spilling.

I seriously hate my car and I think it's the main contributor to my disdain for driving.

I don't trust the car at all and I don't feel safe driving it. Imagine trying to get a job in this thing. In Houston, you can't not have a car, you NEED a car, and I find that absolutely PATHETIC BECAUSE HOUSTON IS THE 4TH LARGEST CITY IN THE FUCKING COUNTRY GRAH. I can't even drive it now because of the battery issue. I need to get it towed to Autozone so they can replace the battery (thankfully I should be a replacement for free).

My car issue really affects my wife way more than it does me-- I take the train to work and am extremely glad that I'm able to do so. Our apartment is a five minute walk to the station and I work in a building right above another one. Plus they pay for my train card!

Atlanta has a train system! It doesn't go all that far out, but if you need to get downtown or to the airport it works.

One of the reasons paying for the Fit on our own would be difficult is due to the high cost of the apartment we're in. It's premium real estate due to its size ("1.5" bedroom, 1100+ sq. ft.) and proximity to the station. I have friends who pay like $500-$600 a month for their place, but ours is $975 at the moment. I'm sure it's way cheaper on the south side (I'm all the way at the end of the line on the north side), but that's getting ghetto so no thanks!

Houston is too spread out for a train system. It's made of a bunch of sub-communities and suburbs and shit, with their own laws. The people in my area (Humble), it's a town all on its own and they have decided they don't want any buses going through their neighborhoods. They passed a law that basically makes public transportation illegal. Their reason? "I don't want people going through my neighborhood."
