thats awesome that youre doing that; too few people do that and its so easy for your family's story to get lost/mixed-up. i always wanted to do it, but so many people in my family either didnt care enough to find out old history or their memories are so bad that they cant anything straight lol. a distant relative made one for my grandma's parents tho, and it was really great being able to read it and understand a tiny little bit of where i came from.

I stopped going to family reunions and started getting emails detailing all the dangers of not showing up. Namely that I might start dating someone I'm actually related to, I'm letting the family name die by not carrying on traditions, etc. We don't even have the same last names, brehs. My family name will be fine.

Always had a small family. Cousins were far away. Was jelly of those big ass families until my friends basically unloaded all of their close ass fam shit drama on me. Then I was like good thing I don't have that mess

. Like this one friend of mine his aunt can't stop dating abusive hoodrats and she even got jumped by an ex-gf and her crew. Her punkass bf just sat in the car while they did. If I had an aunt like that I'd just pray none of those dumbass genes get near my children.

My family is sort of like Soul Food: once all the grandparents died everybody stopped doing family events/dinners/etc. The family reunion always just has people from...somewhere. I'm not sure where they are on the family tree or how I'm related, as we have different last names.

We stopped doing family dinners as much when my grandfather died. We used to spend time together Easter, Mother's Day, Father's Day, July 4;etc Just about every major holiday. Not so much anymore, but we're just now starting to celebrate them together again.

The problem for us is that we're the only group within the extended aunt/uncle/cousin/nephew/etc family that doesn't live in Detroit; we're about an hour away. We used to visit my grandparents at least once a month, and we'd go down there for all the major holidays.

I miss my grandad telling me (every time I saw him) that college was fine, but for real job security I needed to learn how to be a farmer.

With my dad's side of the family, I feel like I can cuss and be myself and shit. With my moms side of the family, I feel like a social pariah. No one pays any attention to me and I feel like a ghost. I feel like I'm walking on egg shells when speaking to cousins on that side and talks always boil down to,"how's school?" "Okay" "awesome" and I can't be my sarcastic, enthusiastic, funny self. which is lame because this is the side of the family I grew up with on the regular. All of which live in it are from Htown.

Mom's side: substance abuse, auto industry workers, religious, etc. One of my uncles is going through a midlife crisis. He just bought himself a Lamborghini and is the most shameless skirt chaser I've ever seen.

Dad's side: dentists, lawyers, nurses, teachers, etc.

Overall I prefer my mom's side, religion aside.

My two cousins on my dad's side of the family are really the only relatives I can relate to the most. Probably the only relatives I'm legitamately excited to see when I visit them. We share similar interests, similar senses of humor, and similar philosophical viewpoints.

As for the rest of my family, we're on completely different wavelengths.

last time i spoke with my closest aunt was almost 2 years ago and last time i spoke to (two of) her children was a year ago.

much like Atramental, I feel like we're on completely different wavelengths. I used to be close to those two cousins i mentioned but we drifted apart as we grew older.

My wife is very close with her family, and they're all pretty local; by extension, I'm really close with her family. They are all relatively balanced, kind, funny people, and I really enjoy dealing with them. I look forward to family events.

In contrast, my USA family -- well, I wouldn't say I came from an idyllic situation, but in comparison to the aunts, uncles, and cousins, the parade of substance dependencies, other compulsive behaviors, divorces, late-life shack ups, shared custodies, and legal drama ensuing from previous partners' drug use leading to unsuccessful attempts to adopt stepchildren into a more stable environment... My family looked like Ward and June Cleaver or the Cunninghams.

I hang out regularly with parents, siblings, aunts, uncles, cousins, and my only remaining grandparent. Most of them are less than an hour away and they're great people. The further extended family is more distant. The vast majority lives in other parts of the country.

My uncle recently passed away from complications with cancer. My aunt requested my bro-in-law and I to come pick up my uncle's old desk to get it out of the house. While we were there, she mentioned she was going to just get rid of his record collection. So we looked through it and were like o-damn. My cousin didn't want them. ("What's a record even?") Anyways, my brother in law took most of the rock albums, the dolly parton, the bill cosby comedy records and some musicals for my sister. I took most of the country albums, but left him the Johnny Cash. We split the Beatles albums. I took a bunch of Merle Haggard, Waylon Jennings, Conway Twitty and Willie Nelson, along with Moody Blues, Steve Miller Band, Bob Dylan, Peter Paul & Mary, Paul Simon, Aretha Franklin, Earl Scruggs, Charlie Pride, Linda Rondstadt, Tammy Wynette, Loretta Lynn and a Mitch Miller record. About 40 or so records for each of us. It was a massive haul. I found a WC Fields record that I nabbed just out of curiosity. My brother in law took the Orson Welles War of the Worlds radio play record.

I've never seen (or remember seeing) anyone on my father's side. but my father was a dick anyway, so whatever. My mom's side is plenty crazy and strewn all over Europe these days, so I don't even get to see them. No siblings sadly, so the only family I have on hand is my mom. She's - mom. I don't know if we'd ever talk to each other if we weren't related. She's a kind and loving person, but also an ignorant country bumpkin.

I'm pretty much persona non grata on my father's side after some hairy inheritance issues.

I'm ok with my mother's side but everyone is dispersed across the country doing their own thing. Family meetups are rare and tend to only happen at funerals.

We don't talk to my dad's side since they decided to throw hissy fits about how we ran our own lives after we graduated. I was disowned because I knocked up a Mexican so they decided to boycott my graduation because I was "an embarrassment".

I didn't want to walk anyways. They disowned my brother because he moved in with a woman that he wasn't married to during his sophomore year of college. They were never very fond of my sister. Probably because she's black and adopted. So they basically just fell out of touch with her completely. My brother apparently got back into their good graces recently. I don't care to try. they can suck a dick.

My mom's side lives in El Paso and we don't really talk to them. The day my grandpa died they called my mom and she said she was on her way over. By the time she got there they were already scrambling trying to figure out how to open his safe. Then when my dad bailed on us in Tennessee and my mom had to move there to take care of us she asked her brother to watch her bar that she owned. He stopped returning her calls so she went to El Paso to see what was going on. He closed up shop and sold everything in the place.
