Boss fights were dumb for how out of place they were, but all were pretty easy.

stun gun and any lethal gun, or better, the typhoon augment, takes them down in seconds.  I just used my exploding revolver on the first two and they were downed quickly.  If you dislike the first two, the third will leave you raging.

just to be clear, saying seconds isn't hyperbole.  stun > revolver > stun > revolver in about ~30 seconds took down the second boss.  apparently the typhoon takes less time.

re: comparisons, of course it's like Deus Ex, I was just picking something modern that's a good comparison.

I was just joking.  The AP comparison works because AP felt inspired by DX1 in spots.  There are a few things that the games share absent in DX1, though.

I think it's also that I played both on PC and some of the interiors in DXHR are giving me AP vibes. If Bebpo starts playing this I think he may say the same thing.

So what's the consensus? I can't play the game until next week. Great game with shitty bosses, or mediocre game with shitty bosses?

Really great game, with a few annoying boss battles that take up MAYBE half an hour out of a total of 30+ hours.

I played both on PC too.  I really liked AP and agreed with your comparison.  AP actually has more consequential choices in the center section, and an argument can be made for the conversation system.  Otherwise it's a wash in favor of Deus Ex.  And I agree that if liked Alpha Protocol, you'll probably really like Deus Ex HR.  I'm tired and will just use the word people are throwing around, but they share the same spirit, along with Vampire Bloodlines.

Thank god I did a little reading up on this game before I got too far in.  If I didn't I would've walked into that first boss with nothing but hacking skills and a pair of panties.

Dermal armor  :-*

But screw these clunky Japanese style boss fights.  Not only is it completely out of place but the combat system in this game isn't good enough to make something like that even remotely enjoyable. I'm still liking the game overall though.  A lot.  It's been awhile since something has hooked me like this.

Anyone know if there's a new game+ after you beat it?

Also, is anyone running into any performance issues on the PC?  For the most part my rig runs it a 60fps at 1900x1280 with everything maxed but every now and then I get a little chug in framerate for like a second.  Like the game is loading or something.  I haven't tried disabling crossfire yet so that may be where the problem is but I'm at work now so that will have to wait 'til tomorrow.

Sounds pretty western to me. All the white folk who can design good boss battles either work at Blizzard or Sony, the rest are garbage.

I left at least one sidequest in Detroit left uncompleted.
spoiler (click to show/hide)
I guess I dicked around too much after I met that Mexican dude from the first mission when he tells you where to find the aug who set him up.  The quest was available for a while but I got caught up doing that multi tiered mission for the cop who was undercover as a prostitute and the next thing I know it was no longer there.  I think I broke into his apartment by accident though.  I hacked a level 5 security lock on one of the appartment doors and the place was looked like an illegal aug clinic.  I'm not sure if that was related or not.

Anyway, I'll be sure to correct that the next time I play it.

the cop's apartment is in the same apartment building required for the sarif drug theft one.  It's the one that has a gate in front of it.  The one you found with a praxis kit was just a secret.

well yeah. i mean if i had to choose just one. i decided on:

spoiler (click to show/hide)
Sarif. Taggart wants to keep the Illuminati around and that's not cool. Darrow wants to stop the Illuminati but at the same time may stop all technological research, and that's not cool. The fourth option isn't bad, letting humanity decide for itself. However committing mass murder against everyone in the facility is not cool.

So Sarif is the only option. It allows continued research on augmentations and deals a blow against a terrorist group. And Jensen is still alive to fight the Illuminati.

Pretty great single player experience overall. I like that there's a lot of story in the side things like computers, ebooks, etc that flesh out the world instead of it simply being exposition. The story itself was pretty wacky at first I had a hard time following what was going on but the basics are enough to make it make sense.

In regard to the Illuminati:
spoiler (click to show/hide)
So Zhao, and Taggart are members of the current iteration?

edit: about Darrow:

I didn't even know who the fuck he was when he was brought into the story. i must have completely missed him being mentioned
[close]

I had a low of fun playing this as a straight stealth game. I wouldn't even have minded if this was a 3rd person game since jumping in and out of cover is a little weird. Using the various augments to be super stealthy was great. Seeing through walls to get an idea of my surroundings, hacking terminals to turn off cameras, choking dudes out, etc. all satiate my MGS hunger that I haven't had in a number of years. Hell, if this was just more of all of that but more focused on primarily being a stealth action game without all the RPG stuff I wouldn't mind.  that said, the RPG stuff was still pretty fun too. I liked that the majority of sidequests where given to you while you're on the critical path so most people won't miss a bulk of the content. but it's still good that they put a few out in the world for you to find to encourage exploration.

the world itself i felt was a good mixture of being just big enough where you felt you could get lost initially (to me that's a plus) but dense enough where even if you're wandering you'll still probably find something. this is something i've had issues with in a lot of open world games. you give me a large open area but it's so large that it feels empty. IMO here I felt there's was nearly always something to find, whether it's a credit chip, a pocket secretary, some ammo, something to hack, or even just some XP. give me something for exploring and i'll continue doing it.

This is def a top 10 contender but I simply can't take top spot thanks to those damn boss battles. They're just downright awful and there's really nothing redeemable about them. If you removed those or did something else in it's place, it could have had a real shot.

as it stands though. really awesome game.

I'd say play the first game, then replay this.  There are a lot of seemingly minor things that make more sense if you've played the first game.  The first game might be too dated for some tastes.  I think it holds up fine for the most part.  The RPG and exploration is actually better than Human Revolution, but the mechanics are kinda busted.

also, you didn't skip the credits, right?

the most obvious part about it is: (spoilers, but not really, for deus ex 1...it's in the opening cutscene)
spoiler (click to show/hide)
The guy at the end of Bob Page, who is more or less the main bad guy in Deus Ex 1.  It's setting up what happens in DX1, which is about 25 years after Human Revolution.

If you haven't play DX1, it just seems like an MGS post credit ending

i figured that was the connection. just didn't have any kind of impact.

played the Hell's Kitchen mission in DE1. The archaic shooting mechanics are what really holds this down. And the fact that the tranq gun is useless if there's more than 1 dude around or if there's an alarm in the area. i guess i'm spoiled by head shots with a tranq taking a guy out.

maybe i see if there's some kind of god mode cheat. that way i can dick around with the stealth stuff and do more hacking and play for the story without worrying about dying.

So what do you guys think their next Deus Ex game is? More Adam Jenson adventures or direct sequel to Deus Ex 1?

I'd really like more stuff pre-dating Deus Ex 1. I much prefer dudes with robot bits than clones filled with nano-machines.

Invisible War is a "direct sequel" to Deus Ex.  Though, Human Revolution doesn't acknowledge it, but why would it when it's about 45 years in the future.  I don't think they'll write it out of whatever world they're building on.

timeline goes:

2027 - Deus Ex Human Revolution
2052 - Deus Ex (The Conspiracy...if it had a subtitle, and it did on PS2)
2072 - Deus Ex Invisible War

Human Revolution is about mechanical augmentations.  Deus Ex is a mix of mechanical and physiopharmaceutical, with nano augmentation practically brand new.  Mechanical augmentations aren't in Invisible War since nano augmentation is better, though physiopharmaceutical has a minor presence.

there is that 25 year period to work with, if they go with a prequel/sequel

yeah, Deus Ex has bad bad stat rpg garbage shooting.  the mechanics have a layer of dice roll bullshit dragging it down.  the stealth is weird too if you want to take enemies out.  like, you need to hit a single pixel behind an enemy's head or neck to take them down

a ways into the game you can find the dragon tooth sword and it tears through enemies.

If you ever play Invisible War, the best way to approach the combat is punching everyone in the head.  there are upgrades to make it a nearly instant ko, and another that lets you box out machines.

they're supposed to be good, I think.  I only glanced at the gaf thread about it.  Seems like there is slowdown during combat and otherwise it's fine.

if you have a chatpad for the 360, you can use it to type instead of the in-game keyboard.  don't know if a bluetooth keyboard works on the PS3.

360 version is fine,it has some slowdowns but nothing overly dramatic...and it uses FXAA,first console game to do that
If you install, loading times are decent.

UK sales are good,sequel inevitable.

Deus Ex: Human Revolution has stormed the UK all-formats chart, finally shoving Zumba Fitness off of the top spot.

505 Games' Rugby World Cup entered in third, just 400 sales behind Zumba.

Xbox 360 sales of Deus Ex counted for 57 per cent of its total. PlayStation 3 notched up 31 per cent while just 13 per cent of copies were sold on PC - although Chart-Track doesn't count digital downloads.

Human Revolution is already just 26,000 copies away from beating predecessor Deus Ex: Invisible War's lifetime sales.

You know if the Steam sales numbers of some titles would be up in the millions companies would love to boast them.

We never hear of Steam sales #s.  Maybe because they aren't that high, huh?

You have a point,look at Witcher 2,interesting

Quote
CD Projekt Red (previously Optimus), producer of the record-breaking “The Witcher” and “The Witcher 2” computer games, reported a net profit of zł.20.4 million and generated zł.80.3 million in revenue for the first half of 2011, Parkiet reported.

Of the group’s many areas of operation, the gaming division provided the largest contribution to the result. In particular, The Witcher 2 game, released on May 17, proved a great success, with sales of 940,000 copies, out of which 200,000 were downloaded online by gamers.

The result was what the company had expected, Piotr Nielubowicz, CD Projekt Red board member, told Parkiet.

He also announced that the company wishes to diversify its source of income by widening its selection of movie publications. Currently, it distributes Disney movies in the Polish market and will start publishing Polsat movies and series starting in September. Also coming up are games by global leader Activision Blizzard which CD Projekt Red will distribute exclusively in Poland.

So out of 30M Steam 'users' only 200k bought Witcher 2 (or even less, it was cheaper and without DRM on GOG.com).

That is less than 1%, more like 0.5% of userbase.

:piss PC 'gamers' :piss2

you have a really dumb perspective on pc gaming.

it's really not. digital purchases are still a relatively new thing so having ~20% if a games sales being solely digital is pretty impressive. TW2 is a poor barometer on the medium either way because it's still a fairly niche title that sells nearly entirely to it's base (hardcore pc gamers).

Shit, I was sleeping on the release of Human Revolution!

Just picked it up yesterday, and got onto the streets of Detroit.

As one of the biggest Deus Ex fanboys on the planet.....so far, so good.

I love that they've brought back the voice actors...Bob Page!  and the voice of Walton Simons as Jensen.  The music cues from the original.   I like the sneaking, the takedowns are badass.

Not so sure about the combat yet though, doesn't seem like running and gunning will be an option like the original could, if you wanted.

Still, am excite!  :hyper

in this case i believe it's critical path that i go heel.

so continuing forth in Hong Kong:
spoiler (click to show/hide)
I make it to Hong Kong. Now initially I found Maggie Chow first. I speak to her and she tells me to go look for the evidence that proves her right at the police station. However I found it strange that the maid was constantly following me around so I got her stuck on the upper level (by jumping down off the balcony) then went looking around. I just stumbled on the secret entrance underneath the lantern and got caught by the MJ12 guys. So I basically fucked that up but I thought it was hilarious that I was able to stumble on a plot twist before it was really revealed to me. When I reloaded the quicksave I went a different direction and met with Gordon Quick who told me to meet Chow and and get the proof that she's a liar. I did it correctly this time and stole the Dragon's Tooth (which is godly btw). I go and speak with Max Chen, they get attacked by CYBER MECH WARRIORS but they get ANNIHILATED by the sword then i go see Gordon Quick. Pretty cool.

The amount in which the way the story could have went from reaching Hong Kong is kind of mind blowing.

just wanted to say punching through walls is my new favourite augment--not only is it great for knocking out unsuspecting gangbangers hiding in apartments, I even found a Praxis kit hidden behind a wall in the sewers!

played for a while today and I gotta say I'm digging the fiction, which doesn't happen that often with videogames. so, a worthy successor to the original then.

I love how you can hack a turret, make it friendly, and then pick the thing up and carry it around like a portable death machine.  It doesn't happen nearly enough in the game but when it does it's fucking awesome.  The only downside is that you don't get a lot XP when it kills people.

second playthrough as robocop right now

after 30 odd hours of sneaking around, never sounding a single alarm, or killing non-bosses, it's just so satisfying.  first mission I walk up to the first guy, stab him; stroll around the corner, pop one guy in the head, throw an explosive barrel at the other, run up and stab third guy, turn around and shoot explosive barrel, and walk through the front door.

I've only found one I could hack so far. And I couldn't hack the machine because Jensen has to stand up to hack a machine and I get spotted instantly ::)

Looks like I have to tell Malik to go fuck herself because the final quest in "Shanghai Justice" REQUIRES you to have Level 3 hacking. There's no other way around it and no pass number to get past the panel. Worst of all the next main mission will cancel all the sidequests so I can't come back to it later. The worst part is I've already trawled the level for all the extra Praxis. What a shittily designed quest.

I have murdered every fuck in the club and there's nothing. Apparently other people are freaking out about not being able to finish this quest too, there's some discussion on the Eidos forums about it. Apparently there just is no door code.

So you couldn't even try every 4 digit combination and open it? There's actually no code to do it?

I'm not playing as a hacker :(

I managed to murder enough random people to level up and reach Level 3, but the degree of difficulty of the hack is pretty much distinguished mentally-challenged unless you've boosted Fortify etc. Tried the hack +20 times and never got it. Already wasted an hour on this shit so fuckit, I'm going to Tai Yong Medical and get on with the story.

Isn't that just a side quest where you need to hack the club?

Yeah it's the very end of Malik's side quest. Oh well I guess we'll never get revenge for your poor preggers girlfriend, shut up and fly my helicopter, this isn't a Bioware game so it's not like you'd put out or anything

:lol it's a pretty funny end to the quest.

Do you have any nukes/stops to help the hack?

Can you just kill the guy (Lee I think)

Naw, too late now anyway, I'm in Tai Yung and having fun again

BTW the Level 3 hacks here are approximately 200 times easier than the one on that door, I'm nailing every one. WTF

If you don't have that one perk that reduces the chance of being caught while hacking then any kind of higher level hack is going to be impossible without nuking all the way through.  Regardless if you're building a hacker or not, that's one area you really should invest in.

robocop Jensen mode is so much fun

TYM is pretty good, especially towards the end.

TYM is probably my favorite part because it has a nice amount of social in addition to stealth, combat, exploration and hacking.
