I was gonna say she looks like Alice, but Belle and Alice are basically the same, minus the hair, which I didn't notice before  :lol

Lots of strats to ezmode 1999 here, including chaining invincibility effects to be nearly unkillable and infinite money/lockpick farming.

no offense, but this sounds like something a man with a small penis would say

How the fuck do you fight a Handyman? Ridiculous that all these enemies are faster than you.

Do any of the vigors work against Handymen?  I don't even think I've been able to stun them with Shock Jockey, which is what I usually just do against annoying enemies.

The most "legit" way to fight a handyman is use Crows on them and pelt them while they're stunned.

Or you can use invincibility stacking, or glitches.

Did you need to have played 1 and 2 to understand what's going on in this one? Is it worth playing for someone who isn't usually into heavily scripted linear FPS games and doesn't care about "games being art"?

I'm almost done with it, and while I can admire it and appreciate everything, these games just aren't really my bag.  I generally don't like fps games without a lot of rpg elements (think fallouts, deus ex, etc) there's ultimately not enough to interest me to pay $60 for a game like this.

Very well made, well executed, beautiful to look at, I would rate it a 9+.... but I really wish I has just waited and not succumbed to the hype  :P

edit: in another couple of months I'll try to do a no shopping 1999 run I guess.

you need to adopt a more cynical shitcunt outlook on these sorts of things. I hardly ever play these big releases because I, with expert shitcunt cynicism, see all the ways I am going to hate a game even in it's debut trailer.

I'm good at tempering my expectations... a fairly short, linear setpiece game can be pretty fun from time to time. I still never played the original Bioshock for some reason. It was one of those games I was gonna buy waaaay back in the day, but never did, and totally forgot about it.

Finished it up today and found it to be a big disappointment over all.

I have many issues with the linear pacing of the story and the lack of using the multi-universes in game was a big let down. You have elizabeth toss you things from the other universes yet they aren't different outside of the coins. Then there is the whole opening tone which is very religious in nature and the whole societal issues with the racial bigotry of the time period. I thought this was Levine's biggest chance of actually breaking games out of the gaming ghetto and get something thought provoking going. Yet he bent to his masters and kindly left those topics on the wayside in order to make the game more sellable to mainstream consumers. Yes it could be argued that the intro was there just to setup the tone of Booker passing and being reborn, but I thought it could have been much more deeper than that.

It would have been nice to see player choices be an important part of the game and how that could alter how you go about the story. One particular area was in the Crow's nest their are signs proclaiming "Protect our Race" or something to that extent. Wouldn't it have been awesome to see your character make a difference in Columbia and have it say something like "Protect our Equality"? With the picture of the all white family being changed to a mixed family. Another super nit picky thing was the tears when you got to them they were only audio for the most part. It would have been nice to actually see into those worlds, it is technically possible. Early on I knew that AD stood for Anna Dewitt and that you were Comstock. The ending felt like a huge cop out and while nicely tying that cop out I lost interest in going back into another Bioshock world. It was a simple ending which could have meant so much more. There was no emotion at all during the whole game and so you don't feel for Booker or anyone really. It would have made sense to show the other Elizabeths much earlier in the game at times like when you die and she brings you back. I even though that they were going to have multiple Elizabeths during the story, but nope. Was anyone disappointed with the lack of explanation of the boys of silence?

I can only imagine Mr Levine was stuck and didn't know how to make his ideas into a game. The world he created while grand and beautiful is marred by the cookie cutter linear story that pushes no boundaries. The picture I have of Levine is one of a man looking at his keyboard stuck with writers block. Then he gets the lightbulb over his head and its Columbia which is just mirrored and repeated infinitely with money signs. I'd love to know more about the development process of this game cause it would be fairly interesting to see if that truly was the case or not.

Also something else that bothered me was the Songbird, it is never really talked about in any large capacity. And also Lady Comstock talks about her husband being confined to a metal body due to the cancer he got from the device. What happened to that whole bit? He was obviously flesh and blood at the end.

I'm pretty close to the end but I'll save the final stretch for tomorrow. I like it. I like it alot. I'll save the full wrap up "review" for tomorrow after I beat it though. It has its flaws like any game especially a story based shooter but storywise and atmopshere wise I think they've done a pretty good job after starting out and thinking that maybe they had lost their minds and gotten way too artsy and full of themselves early on. It's not a perfect story nor does it necessarily successfully pull off the gravitas to suit the material as well as I would like but I'll go into that tomorrow. On the pure gameplay side I think it plays a lot better than the original though.

Sometimes the writing in a game gets revised a bunch of times while they revise the gameplay. Sometimes things which an editor should catch fall through the cracks.

I think this whole bit is to simply build on the naiveness of the character. She's always wanted to go to Paris. Even when Booker rescues her, all she is thinking about is, this is her way to Paris. People tend to project their wishes on other people.

Finished.

I really appreciate the way the finale of the game plays out.

I'm really at a lost over how to approach speaking about this game. It's one of those narratives that I have a hard time wrapping my head around because of specific aspects. It tells a very thoughtful story and manages to defy many expectations.

Really, the gameplay is what shines most of all in this game actually. When the game puts you in a combat arena with sky-lines, multiple tiers of verticality, tons of item tears, etc etc, I don't think I've had as much fun in a FPS as I did in those scenarios in a very long time.

So to think you have some amazing shooty gameplay ON TOP of a well told story AND good characters? This is quite a way to end the generation.

But man, I can't really get into the story in detail. It's one of those "go back and think about what you've seen in a COMPLETELY different light" kinda narratives. I don't want to say much else beyond that.

Bioshock Infinite is a REALLY good video game product.

I still dont get the ending though.

Okay so you go back in time to kill yourself so you dont have a chance to go through the baptism.  But when you go back in time it isnt the normal kind of time travel, you are in the body of the old self with all the memories of your future self.  Wouldnt that mean that because of new memories that you wouldnt go through the baptism because of the future memories thus you didnt need to kill yourself?  It would have made more sense to me if you went back and saw your old self and killed him and then you see yourself disappear.

Well here are my final thoughts. Overall it's the best Bioshock yet, but could still be better.

+Gorgeous graphics and setpieces
+Competent shooter with superpowers to mess around with
+Decent enemy variety
+Rail lines and hooks are a cool mechanic
+1999 mode is an improvement over previous game modes

-Scavenger hunt gets boring esp. on repeat plays
-Midgame in Pinkerton is repetitive filler
-Mowing down the same old AI grunts can get boring
-While 1999 mode is an improvement, it's still too easy to break and powers don't feel as important as they should

That gaf post is typical for a pseudo-intellectual tryhard. It's rife with awful sentence structure, excess adjectives, and verbal diarrhea. He tries for flowery and descriptive and ends up with mangled and painful.

I'd be perfectly fine if Bioshock was some other kind of game where you were in that universe. Of course with that comes the limitations of a much smaller budget and almost no marketing compared to what it gets now. As far as his point though, Yeah you could probably make something closer to Deus Ex where you have more options to speak to people and combat isn't your only option. But I have a feeling that Levine has enough pull that if that was the game he wanted to make, he would have made it. I think it works for the type of game it is though. It's a linear story based adventure fps campaign. I judged it on those merits and didn't find myself harking for a Deus Ex style game but I see how somebody could feel differently based on how much backstory the universe has built into it.

I absolutely hate critics who try to say what a game should and shouldn't be. It's the worst kind of critiques in my opinion. Judge a game on what it IS and not what you wish it to be.

Saying stuff like "I hate that this game isn't X" is fucking stupid and awful.

Criticism does imply you wish it were different. When it gets to the point where you want the game to be an entirely different genre, you might be going too far. "I wish this game was an RPG!" is a pretty common refrain.

Stoney, that fight is pretty easy if you run into the alcove w/ the medkits and camp back there.

Best way to take out Handymen is spam Crows on them while using a high powered weapon on their weak spot. If you run out, ride the rail lines until they jump up to zap the lines. They are very vulnerable while hanging on.

I made it more than halfway through before I decided I had enough. I'm just not compelled enough to finish it. I got my $3.50 worth.

I think the gunplay is the highlight of the game IMO. Between the way the weapons feel, the new powers, the skylines, etc. It all makes the combat really fun and memorable.

When the combat is at its best, and you have lots of options, I agree it is really fun.

yep yep yep.  I love hooking a skyline at the last moment to get out of harms way and get supplies before I hook one back to continue kicking ass.  It adds a whole new level of excitement to some set pieces
