They're either still calling it Bioshock for marketing or because plasmids and shit are still a part of the game (that rose scene looked like telekinesis).  Otherwise it looks like there is more of a mechanic theme to it and just as different as Bioshock 1 was to System Shock.

Yeah, they probably just slapped the Bioshock name on whatever new IP they were working on because 2K Marin were the guys from the team that wanted to continue with Bioshock while Levine wanted to do something new. Either way, this is clearly not a cookie cutter sequel so I'm optimistic.

I thought it was "Ken wanted to do something new, and the team wanted to do something, anything without Ken. Maybe even open a burrito stand."

I think it was "Ken wanted to do something new, and 2K Marin wanted to do something new too, and Ken said 'no way José, I call dibs on doing something exciting and new then,' and the team said, fine okay WHATEVER can we please just move to the opposite coast already."

Honestly, "Bioshock....in this sky" was my first reaction too, and a letdown. But reading how it's meant to be a travelling world's fair of sorts gone wrong sounds pretty interesting and brought me back.

I like that dude's mustache.

Also, the city looks pretty good. Is this UE3? Or that crazy hybrid engine.

Hmmmm, would be nice if it's a new engine because Bio2 (especially on PC) showed the engine's age/limits.  But that would mean doing an entirely new engine when they already have a good running multi-platform engine so dunnoooo

They've said it was a new engine but I don't know if that means an upgraded engine or a brand new in house engine or just the latest version of unreal since the original used like unreal engine 2.5 back in the day.

Considering this hit's in 2012, do you guys think that 2K might put out a bioshock expansion or something in the meantime.

No. It doesn't make much sense to do so.

Wait, what...2012?

What the fuck have Irrational been doing since Bioshock 1?  It says in the interview they only decided on the story for this one 7-8 months ago.  There's like a 3 year missing gap there.

They're at least going for a new setting this time, which does pique my interest a bit. The franchise is also going back to the original development team, so there's that too. And the steampunk style looks even more amped up, with clanking gears and airship and Victorian architecture.

Moral choice was really a non-factor in the original, since it boiled down to a single question "Do you want to be evil or good?". Despite the characterization by the staff that it was tough choice, on account of their being a limited supply of Adam, you could easily make your way through the game with killing the Little Sisters, which simply made the moral choice an issue of preference. Hopefully it will be more fleshed out this time.

Yeah that part was nothing but a gimmick. They could have easily removed that element from the game.

Someone made this comment which I hadn't considered before. They (meaning Irrational) seem to be treating Bioshock in the same way that Square treats the final fantasy entries in that they share the same name for marketing reasons but none of the story. That could be an interesting take on a western franchise.

I wish they would get away from Bioshock though.  I want to play a sci-fi version like Systemshock, but without having to see 1997 voodooFX graphics and fucking with Windows 7 settings.

Since they are committed to a Bioshock type world it seems there is nothing to say the next one couldn't be set in the future ala sci-fi.

I didn't quite make the point I should have: The footage was from a trailer which has been out for a month or so, and this is just cutting it together to say, "hey we're going to show you actual gameplay soon..." Which was weird to me. This is just as indicative of actual gameplay as Bioshock's original trailer:

Hopefully it's not far off for INFINITE, but this is more like a gameplay target than footage.

Bioshock 1 had an arrow play the game for you and this one will have a female character hold your hand throughout the game, telling you exactly what to do, where to go, etc. It looks amazing, sounds amazing, but it's only works as an "experience". As a game it's totally shallow, devoid of any compelling gameplay that made me a fan of Irrational in the first place (SS2, SWAT4)

I hope I'm wrong but after seeing that trailer and reading the interviews, I doubt it.

More games need to put player into the cutscenes, if you ask me.

Giant Bomb has a crazy long interview with Levine.

As far the gameplay video I thought it was impressive. It reinvigorated my interest in another title set in that universe when I thought I was Bioshocked out.

Reading the opinions of folks in this thread as more info came out was fun. I hadn't seen anything of this game until the 10 minute gameplay video, and I'm very excited to get my hands on this game. The plot comes off like a Hans Christian Andersen story.

I was under the impression that Bioshock 2 was good, if you want more Bioshock 1. I enjoyed 1, played it until Achievement completion, but I also felt like I had enough of it, since it felt a lot, a lot, A LOT like playing System Shock 2 again.

This one looks like you'll have some beautiful scenery (one of the screenshots is my current desktop), some interesting rapid traversal in lieu of hallways, a a hot, corseted chick with a pageboy haircut who desperately needs your help. Ken Levine and his damned ego grate on me, but I see no other choice but to consider this a day one purchase.

I do find the cultish love that sounds irrational a bit annoying which tends to inflate their ego.

But to their credit they do tend to put out interesting titles. At least premise wise. Mechanically I've never quite thought their games matched the premise but they are a good company generally.

Yeah, same here.

I'd automatically assumed Infinite would be more ridiculous milking until that amazing trailer.  So while I try to avoid Levine interviews, in fairness he and his team deserve the credit thus far.
