They bounced around the idea of a sixth season of The Wire with the influx of hispanics being the central theme but nixed the idea  :shh

I think David Simon felt he didn't really know enough about it to give as truthful an account of it as everything else which is based on first-hand experience. (I just checked the Baltimore wiki and it said even the 2006-08 census was outdated as the influx of hispanics is such a recent phenomenon - Simon wouldn't be around to have seen it)

Just finished The Shield this past weekend, btw. It may not be The Wire but it was damn good. The final season was easily my favorite, which you don't always get to say.

I thought that season 2, while great, was not nearly on the same footing as season 1. I find the poor more interesting than the working man I guess. There was more intrigue and mystery surrounded around the figures in season 1. Not so much in season 2. That said, it was still extremely well written, and even at its slowest moments I never felt that season 2 was ever a downer.

So far, I have loved every episode of The Wire I have seen. No filler, no bullshit, just straight to the point. Nothing feels pointless, if something happens it is developed for a reason.

I hear season 3 is great but I also hear it's the weakest season from a few folks. Seems like a mixed season in terms of opinions.

And I agree that season 2 is ballsy as fuck. I thought it was probably the most ballsy second season of a show I've seen since the second season of Lost.

I've heard more people say Season Three is the best than I've heard people say it's the weakest. If you prefer the show focussing on the streets you'll like Season Three. And Four. Definitely Four.

Season 3 is great. I wouldn't put it on par with season 1 - yet, at least - but I like it more than season 2. Actually, on a story and writing level I think it's above season 1, but the mystery of cracking the Barksdale case was such a trip that I can't help but put it above the others. I'm nine episodes in. The drama just continues and continues to ramp up. This is some good television.

Only disappointment so far is that they have ignored EVERY THING in season 2: its characters, the port, Ziggy in jail, Nick and how he's doing, the works. NOTHING.

I'm sure I will be. I've been told that season 4 is about the education system. Arguing education and its importance in the black and, well, minority in general community, is one of my favorite subjects. It all starts in school. Kids who made the Dean's List and Honor Roll and were in the top of their class in the ghetto, make it to college and higher education only to find they are unable to do the coursework.

Shit is fascinating and one of the most important subjects when talking about crime, drugs, and ways of living. Far more important than police tracing calls and stuff. Although interesting, it's a foreign subject to me. Education and the effect on minorities, however, it more close to heart.

I'm sorry, boo.  :'(

I have no net aside from at my friends place (she's letting me mooch her connection when I need it) and I have nothing good to read, so I'm just marathoning The Wire.

After thinking on it, I gotta say...season 3 > season 1. In terms of writing, themes, characters...season 3 takes the cake. I love how it handled all forms of business and politics - illegal or legal, moral or amoral. And in the end almost every character gets hit in the face by politics, either in a good or even a bad way. It was a very well grounded and condensed season, and it never strayed off from the subject of politics and government and hierarchy. It never strayed off course like season 2 did and it was better written than season 1.

"We ain't gotta dream no more, man"

How do you interpret this line? So good.

Also, I hope someone skull fucks Clay Davis.

"Another time, a man got shot yards away, staggered onto the set trailing blood, and was treated by the show’s medic. Once, a man pressed a package of heroin into the hands of Andre Royo, the actor who plays the sympathetic junkie and police informant Bubbles, saying, “Man, you need a fix more than I do.” Royo refers to that moment as his “street Oscar.”

Wow.

Its really crazy. Shows don't usually peak so late into their run. Especially ones that hinged on a single concept (a wiretap investigation). I was worried initially the show would keep reusing that idea and it does for the second season but they get around that by drastically changing up the targets and tone of the story.

And here we have season 4 where an investigation isn't even the lead story. Instead it tackles education and politics. And somehow, someway it never crashes and burns. How'd they manage to place the focal point of the story on a bunch of child actors and have it not suck? Not only the fact that its a story about a bunch of kids but a multi tiered story that never feels fake. Its such a ballsy move taking Jim McNulty who would be considered the "main character" to anymone watching the first and second season and put him in the back then replace him with a collection of youths. And yet it works.

Agreed 100%. The very first episode convinced me I'd love the young characters by the end of the season. That arc also set up some of the most emotional scenes of the entire series - not just n S4, but S5 as well, which isn't nearly as good but still has its moments.

Can someone please kill or fire Herc? I'm sick of his incompetence.

In the past few episodes:

- Caught the Mayor getting a blowjob from his secretary. Gets promoted unjustly because the punk is a screw up.
- Lost the police surveillance camera.
- Railed on Marlow's crew. Forcing them to toss away crucial evidence, making the trail cold.
- Antagonizes the corner guys, making it harder to investigate.
- Promises Kima and Bubbles that he'll help Bubbles get the guy who's dogging him within five minutes of calling him.
- Bubbles helps Herc out and names Little Kevin out.
- Bubbles finds the guy who's dogging him in an alleyway, Herc says he's in the middle of an interview and ignores it, saying he'll help Bubbles tomorrow. Bubbles gets beat.
- Herc presses Little Kevin about the murder of the guy he's chasing, with the subtlety of a tank on a city street, and makes it obvious that there was a rat, that being his informant Randy. Now Randy will likely end up dead because Herc and shitty policing.

Herc sucks balls. By far and away the worst character on the show. Him, Carter (Carver?) and that other shitty black cop at Western District who handles people any fucking way he wants. All of them need to be capped - in the head - by Marlow and crew by the end of the season or I will be pissed.
