Just got disc 5 (final disc) of season 1 from netflix. I stopped watching for a bit because I wanted to watch some films. Speaking of which, I need to put Tron at the top of my queue since I've never seen it and want to see the sequel.

Story is getting good.

I've never seen a show with so many of the actors being overwhelmingly black while being a serious drama to boot with the only exception being Roots. I like that. A lot.

A few notes:

1. Omar is the shit.
2. The script is amazing.
3. I love every character.
4. Bubbles has a lot of heart.
5. I love how it's a nice take on both the illegal biz and the cops. There are nice parallels between both groups, and each character feels human, every single character has a character quirk; they're not perfect people and the show doesn't show them to be. Whether they're pushing crack in yellow caps or a detective who uses his own children to help him on a case, every character is just trying to get by, and through their own means. This is my HBO Original Show that isn't Sex and the City, so I'm just really geeked out over the quality of the writing here. It's something you rarely see on television, even in dramas, in my experience, and currently -- of the shows I watch -- the only shows that pull it off well are Mad Men and Breaking Bad.

Phoenix posted this scene before but I didn't watch it for fear of spoilers, but it's a clear example of how awesome this show is, and yes I know I'm beating a dead horse but I don't give a shit.

I'm finally finishing up the series. Halfway into Season 5. The thread of various characters is greatly handled in this series. Season 5 is pretty ho hum for me but there are other aspects that are keeping me captivated.

Indeed, one of the best. I remember hearing BET completely cut the docks scenes out of their broadcast of S2. Pretty pathetic. Those scenes speak beyond race

Yup. 1, 3, and 4 are basically the best; 2 is the most divisive; and 5 is universally considered the worst season, while certainly not "bad"

Dunno which I like more, 3 or 4. S3 is hard to put anything over due to some of the more amazing/shocking events, but S4 is easily the most emotional. I remember watching the first episode of S4 and being convinced I'd fall in love with the younger actors by the end of the season. What an amazing show.

My taste in each Season is coming into focus and I'm feeling that it goes as such 2>1>3>4>5 . There's been a large gap between watching seasons 1,2,3 and 4 and 5 though. I didn't really care for the one aspect they focused on in 4 and Season 5 sort of focused on an aspect thats even more contrived. I just wanted them to go back to busting gangsters.

I'm the exact opposite: the focus of S4 completely enthralled me. I knew so many kids like that growing up. The school system focus was amazing. And I also like the mayor/politics stuff

Are uninteresting and uninspired. They don't really fit into the whole thing and they are written that way. The abrupt shift from 1 to 2 was perhaps the ballsiest decision on television, ever.

I had figured that Avon ordered Stringer to do it. I don't know why. I guess that's how low my opinion of Avon was. Before this String never acted without Avon's approval. Never. Even at the funeral with Prop. Joe, he's like,"I'll talk to Avon". It's always about Avon with String. String is Avon's go-to man, and has been since episode one.

Watching the next episode confirmed that Stringer did it without Avon's consent.

Stringer is too smart for Avon and it seemed that String called most of the shots. A wise cat like that won't stand as second in command for too long. I'm sure String will betray Avon like that and take control of the organization if the opportunity presents itself. Stringer's two-face acts come as no surprise though. He's too smart for his own good: going to college for business classes to use on their own organization, fucking Dee's girl when he's in the can, putting a hit on Dee...but the thing is that he does everything he can for Avon, so it seems like his actions carry truth behind them. But now I just don't know anymore.
