Hopefuly this game isnt harder by forcing the save after you lose all your potions and die like the prequel or whatever he calls it.

From GamesTM:
Quote
Miyazaki wants the players to experience tens of thousands, or millions of deaths."
"The combat remains largely unchanged from Demon's Souls, while the team concentrates on improving the elements of role-playing and exploration."
"You are no longer [able] to pick a character class from the start. Instead you are allowed to equip any armour or weapon you like, prising the potential for customization wide open."
"There are over 100 weapons, and players will be able to cycle through them in real time. A wider range of magic spells is also available."
"Miyazaki is careful to point out that the game isn't truly open-world as some media outlets have reported, but it will be less compartmentalized than Demon's Souls. There's still a hub - a campfire within a ruined castle - but you'll be able to leave through your choice of exits and work through the interconnected levels. We're told that you'll be able to travel to any location you can see in the distance."
"Secret routes and locations have also been discussed. From Software inadvertently reveals one to us in a place aptly named Trap Road"
"Player death does not have him transform into a ghost, but instead he finds himself in an alternate part of the area and discovers a tunnel to a secret location. Miyazaki is keen to point out the tunnel leads to an even harsher environment as punishment for slipping off the rail and dying."
"We are trying to provide an experience one or two steps ahead of what we did for Demon's Souls."
"Dark Souls introduces mid-level bosses that can pursue you in unprecedented ways, leaping over walls and climbing buildings to reach you."

And some new screens:

Nah, that's the first proper gameplay I've seen from Dark Souls. Looks exactly the same as Demons Souls, if I didn't know better I would've thought they were playing DS in world 1. So essentially this is Demon's Souls 1.5, new environments, more quests, different classes, new spells and more ways to hold your weapons. Sounds good :drool

Remember when Demon Souls was first shown and everyone thought it looked like dogshit?

The game looks absurd visually. I didn't play Demon so is there like a plot? I just thought it was "Yo, kill shit and die horribly" but this seems to have a legit plot which seems out of place.

There was a plot in the Demon's Souls, but 95% of it takes place in the background. There are only a few NPCs for you to interact with and almost all of the cutscenes are very short. It's basically just an action game - you pick a stage, kill everyone in it, kill the boss at the end, and then move on to the next stage.

Dark Souls will probably be similar, though I wouldn't be surprised if they tried to characterize the bosses a little more or something.

edit: by the way, it releases on October 4th in the US. October 7th in Europe. Only 4 more months :hyper

Demon Souls first showing was particularly dogshitty and barely functional. Just ask DCharlie.

Fortunately the game was tightened up before release. But It was an early PhyreEngine game and it showed. This however looks phenomenal thanks to the art direction, they took everything that made Demon Souls good and fucking RAN with it. I can't tell yet how big of jump it is technically though, so far it looks like a more polished DS with better lighting (and better textures?). I wonder what engine they're using.

Re: Story

The first game had an unintrusive backstory, a few NPCs, and a somewhat intriguing lore (if you care enough to read every bit and piece about it out there). But it's definitely kept to a bare minimum, and thank god for that. I can see them going the same route here, as there haven't been anything shown so far that would indicate otherwise. All voiced lines from the trailer so far sound like your the regular NPC fair.

I still havent played Demon's Souls, but I have pre-ordered the collectors edition of Dark Souls, purely based on recommendations.

Looking forward to playing it!

Been wanting to play a game I can really get my teeth into lately. I'm enjoying Deus Ex, but I'm so strapped for time at the moment, as I'm making a game of my own, which should hopefully be complete once Dark Souls drops.

Some info on the 360 version: http://kotaku.com/5844514/hows-dark-souls-looking-on-xbox-360

He basically says it's nearly identical, but he hasn't played it as much as the PS3 version yet.

Also, no voice chat confirmed, if it hasn't been already.
Quote
Curious players have also wondered about how Dark Souls on Xbox 360 will handle Party Chat and Private Chat functionality. Well, the game does not support player-to-player voice chat over Xbox Live. At all. No real surprises there. However, if players engage a Party Chat session, Dark Souls will instantly kick you out of your current game and boot you to the main menu.

"Cannot continue game while you are in party chat. Returning to title screen..." reads on on-screen prompt if in a chat session. It's similar to the way Dark/Demon's Souls handles network connection interruptions for players who take those games online—you're booted to the main menu, with your progress, location and world state saved.

It probably uses the same tech MW2 does. You can still do 1v1 chat...
