really depends on what weapon you want to use. Certain weapons scale better than others via STR/DEX, check the equipment screen. Weapons have stat scaling values on their status, you get shit like C, D, B etc. next to an icon which will tell you which stat scales the weapon damage

I'm so indecisive!  I originally wanted to go STR, but I don't wanna be slow and encumbered with armor and shit either.  And I'm not sure what sort of goals I should set, stat-wise—like what I'm trying to build up to.

Blighttown? That's barely a quarter into the game.

That's as far as I got.  :'(

Dark Souls proves that you dont need complicated controls, long tutorials or a billion cutscenes like Zelda recently.

That said, I would love them to add towns with only npcs and no monsters in next Souls game.

That large ass dude with the club when heading down to what I assume is Blighttown is pounding my puckered butthole :( I understand the strategy needed to beat him but he always seems to get me when he has a sliver of life left. He has this deceptive swing that allows him to come in for a second pound.

Are you FUCKING serious?! Oh my GOD :(

For some reason its being a real hair in my asshole. Its probably the weapons I'm using (the Black Knight Sword). Its pretty slow to swing but obviously powerful. Maybe I should upgrade a spear or something.

I think there's a total of 6 or 7 of those dudes in Blighttown.

Blighttown is admittedly one of the first make or break sections of the game. It tests your patience with confusing layouts and lots of annoying enemies, some with really bullshit attacks.

the only advice I will give is: make sure you have purple moss and blooming moss.

I really feel like Blighttown is when the game starts.

And BT, try parrying. If you're on PC with the unlocked framerate, it's actually pretty easy to do. Specifically the overhead smash and side swipe.

tomb of giants is way worse. Thanks to the shorttcut in blighttown you can skip like 60% of the actual area.

On PS3 unfortunately and I've been such a pussy in regards to parrying cause I second guess myself when it comes to the correct moment to parry. I just watched a vid on it though and will try and practice. I'm currently playing like the Hulk and I think I would be better suited with more finesse.

Speaks to the depth of this game though. Seems like you can get by with a single tactic, although you'll die a lot. Seems best when you try many different tactics, weapons and armor. Hope they develop the next King's Field like this.

There will never be another King's Field, rest assured.

I can't imagine playing the game approaching every enemy with the same tactic. Pretty much every encounter in the game is deliberately designed and there's almost always a clear path to success, it's just about execution.

I believe someone high up from From stated that they would like to return to King's Field. It would be an interesting break in between a next gen Dark Souls or something but I'm just wishing here.

I would be very pleased to see a source on that. The only thing I remember hearing is that Souls director Hidetaka Miyazaki is a huge fan of those games (the influence on his work is obvious), and that dark fantasy is part of FROM's DNA, which... No shit. Of course they'll make another Souls-style game, but I highly doubt we're gonna see a new game with the title "King's Field" on the box.

Again, I'd love to be wrong, I actually like the King's Field games more.

I remember reading a GAF thread where people were freaking out over the quote but can't find it now. The only thread that comes up is a quote about reviving the series via smartphones or tablets with an emphasis on still being hardcore or something.

I just wish they'd look at the wild success of Skyrim and the success of the Soul series and think on the possibility that a hardcore first person game ala King's Field could be viable commercially if its heavily connected with the Souls series.

What strategy are you using against them? And are you using a shield with 100% phys block? This is one of the biggest keys to the game, and staying under at least 50% equip load. Anyway all you need to do is circle strafe and backstab those big dudes with clubs, I NEVER parry in this game or in Demon's Souls. Just keep dat shield up, circle strafe and backstab, keep circle strafing with your shield up wait til he misses you, go in for the kill keep it simple and methodical fancy shit like parrying is for pros/PvP completely unnecessary for PvM except maybe the final bossfight depending on your build. Screw greatshields too, get something light with 100% phys block like the Spider Shield at the beginning of the sewers.

Kings Field is very much better.

I own them all~

KF1, KF2, Shadow Tower, KF Ancient City, Eternal Ring

I know there's a translation for the jap-only PSX game... and recently there was a translation for the PS2 sequel to Shadow Tower.

I actually got past him. I grew some balls and used two Parry and Riposte and finished it off with a swing or two. Really easy to parry it but the danger was extremely high obviously (one hit is insta-kill for me). Now I'm getting my ass pounded in the upper woods area.

I recently figured out how to parry Black Knights, I feel like a super-badass running around in Lautrec's armor one-shotting big baddies like it's nothing. Since placing the Lordvessel I've just been kinda goofing around. I tried fighting Seath and that went very poorly, then decided to check out the Painted World and messed that dragon up instead.

No judgement, but I feel like the Drake Sword is a pretty dumb weapon at the beginning of the game. It's way more useful to find a weapon with some good stat scaling that you can keep with you and level up for a long time, ideally all the way to the end. Watching my friends use it and going from my own experience, it trivializes the weapon upgrade and stat scaling elements for most of the game's beginning, systems you ought to be familiar with as soon as possible.

From what I understand about the stats in this game, it's better to pick equipment you know you want and spec into it so that as you get stronger, so does your weapon. I could be wrong, though, that's just how it's worked for me.

The Black Knight Sword scales with strength and dexterity I believe and can be obtained in Undead Burg? (I think its called) Its been my go to sword and I've killed bosses rather easily with it. Needs high strength to handle it though.

I need one of the regular Black Knight swords, the Black Knight Greatsword's stats are just way too high for me right now.

The Drake Sword is a really good weapon for early on, and by the time it becomes less useful you should have other weapons that you use.

Yeah, the Black Knight Sword is an amazing weapon that will carry you through the game. It's a little too slow for me, but the trade-off is being able to flatten bitches like pancakes.

you can get a zweihander in the first 15 minutes of the game, which ironically is probably the best strength weapon in the game. It scales with str and dex, and the R2 is incredibly powerful as it can knockback almost everything. Even those mega knights in anor londo.

Yah, but you can 1 hand the Drake sword in the beginning with 16 STR iirc and you'll do better damage 1 handing it than two handing the Zwei for a while. Base Drake outmatched Zwei at +5 till I was up to Sens Fortress

well yeah, but zweis longer reach is also an important factor. I have basically played with the same sword the whole game. I got the dragon greatsword with it's super R2 attack, though it consumes durability so i switched back to zwei.

raise stamina and you can do R1, R1, R1 in one sweep. Will kill most nearby enemies. As for the powerful R2, use it on enemies that are important to knock back (etc large orcs or knights)

Absolutely, feel no obligation to attack right away. For groups, try to corral the enemies so you can clear out many with one swipe.

Sticking with pure damage is more versatile, because pretty much everything in the game takes physical damage. Doing a magic upgrade usually trades raw damage and better stat scaling for bonus elemental damage, so it's more about what you want for that weapon. I'd find a secondary weapon you like and ascend that to something like Divine, as it'll come in handy later when you're fighting skeletons.

yeah vitality and endurance

str, dex, end and vit are the best stat upgrades if you're going melee character.

edit: NEVER raise resistance as it is the most useless stat upgrade in the game.

I didn't think it was that bad, you just gotta worry about the toxic assassins. They don't respawn so if you make it a point to hunt them down the rest is pretty cake once you get a handle on being aware of your footing at all times. A lot of people fall to their deaths there. The worst part is the gnarly framerate drop, but I imagine if you're playing on PC with DSfix, this is not a problem.

Anywho, I just finished the game :) I think the shittiest part of the game is Lost Izalith. Everything else was a load of fun, even during all the painful, humiliating deaths. I managed to kill Gwyn entirely by parrying, so fuck anybody who says not to parry. Learn it, know it, live it.
