I bitch because it's fucking awesome for the most part

It's a lot of "how did people who designed this game think that is a good idea?"

like, the bonfire placement is:  X...X..........................................................thirty minutes later...Boss Fight.............X

there's a solid 2 minute trek between a bonfire and boss fight.  you don't even need to engage the enemy, but retrying takes two minutes of doing nothing.  it's not clever or challenging or fun; it's a stupid chore.  that's how it is for a lot of the game.  there's a bunch of things that make you not want to play it, but you really do because it can be really good.

ok, so done in about 60 hours.   checking some things, it seems like I did everything except covenant business and collecting equipment I'd never use.  the only boss I didn't fight was Priscilla because I was too lazy to pick a fight with someone who didn't want one.  also didn't exploit the souls thing and finished legit with at lvl 71.  At most, maybe farmed for 2 to 3 of those 60 hours, and the second hour I was strong enough to just fight the forest people directly.

really great game.  I'd do the new game plus after a break.

Demon's Souls was about half that time.  Comparing them, I like the open world design when you're not backtracking.  For Dark Race 2, From should keep the open world, but find a way to  make it less tedious.  As much as I whined in this thread, I had a harder time with Demon's Souls.  Consensus seems to be that Dark Souls was harder, so I dunno.  Um, bosses were better in Demon's souls.   Otherwise, I think I liked Dark Souls more.

funny thing is, I wasn't going to buy this because I thought October would be Batman month.  but the PC version was delayed so I went ahead and it was totally worth it.

i think i'm done playing. i just entered blighttown. i dont really like the idea of every enemy inflicting some form of poison or toxic on me and the framerate is bad. i've put about 20 hours in and that's good enough.

maybe i'll come back to it next year

tomb of giants is a bit annoying. can't find a bonfire and I have to go a pretty long way from the catacombs one. Though it might be quicker if I start from the secret(?) bonfire in the catacombs, but I seem to have forgotten where that one is :P

I completed the Crystal Cave and Demon's Ruin, I was about to head to Izalith next, while leaving the Catacombs for last, but I decided to complete some side quests. Some of them are weird and specific, I'm loving it.

The centipede demon kept fucking me up (melee + pyro). I didn't try my enchanted falchion, so maybe I'll give it a whirl before going back to the tomb.

I also tried looking for the way of white lady in the catacombs, but either she's somewhere else or I have absolutely no idea where she is (the latter applies regardless). Found the smith down there though. purty awesome little intro vid. Thought I was about to get fucked up.

Great reach for normal attacks, but a crazier reach for the heavy, charging attack. It also does decent Lightning damage. I wasted 10 Demon Titanite to fully upgrade it. Totally worth, imo.

Aren't you playing with a way over leveled character Shah? Things should seem more trivial to you than others who are playing the game properly. Just sayin. Might check out that Demon Spear though, got a ton of Demon Titanite....

I like how the Crystal Lizards respawn till you actually kill them in this game, much less rage inducing than DeS. Though I've already been screwed out of a couple in Great Hollow because they've fallen down through the branches after dying and I couldn't find their bodies to loot  :'( Nearing 50 hours in this, only just up to the part where you hunt demons to fill the lordvessel. Taking my time but it's good, though I've been screwed by TWoP and Fog Ring + elemental weapons the last few PvP encounters I've had. Today I'm gonna try get my guy set up so I don't get so screwed in PvP, if you can't beat 'em join 'em right?

Yeah, I raised my character's level from 80 to 120, but pooled the extra points in my lowest stats, mainly Dex, Att, Int, and Faith. Aside from the few extra defense points that comes with every level-up, my character still doesn't feel powerful enough, as evidenced by the number of deaths I endured in the Crystal Cave and Demon's Ruin. :-\

The biggest advantage so far has been the extra Attunement slots, though. :bow

if you guys still can, look into the crystal ring shield and the ninja flip ring from the forest covenant

crystal ring shield is any +10 small shield plus the moonlight butterfly's soul.  initially it just seems like a good magic defense shield, but the L2 attack takes off 2 durability and launches a ranged ring attack scaled by your right hand weapon's strength.  repairing it is dirt cheap too.  like under 200 souls even if it's completely broken and it has fairly high durability.

you get the ninja flip ring from killing an npc spawned after you join the forest covenant, but obviously you're kicked out of the covenant for doing it.  so join, do some online pvp and get the fog ring, and kill the guy for the ring (it's in blighttown, near that elevator).  like Havel's ring, it lets you use heavier equipment and still dodge quickly.  you keep the quick dodge so long as you're under 50%.  I was able to rock Havel's armor and still do backflips all over the place.

I might glitch the game some more to fully upgrade my Pyro Glove. If I face the Bed of Chaos(?) and defeat it, Queelana will stop helping me for the rest of this playthrough :'(

I'm too weak!

you can grind enough to max the pyro glove in ~30 minutes at the forest the honest way.  there's a ring in Tomb of Giants that gives 20% additional souls.  a single run in the forest is 8400.  If you're strong enough to challenge them without cowering in that glitch spot, each run can be done in seconds.  In total you'd want something like 300k souls to get everything useful from her.

if the secret bonfire is the one with the statue spiking you at the entrance, there's a quick way down to the tomb of giants.  Just keep running straight, roll off the bridge to a ledge on the right, then roll again, heal, and dash to where that boss fight was to avoid fighting those wheel enemies.  the bonfire in tomb of giants is more or less straight ahead.  you have to fight maybe three or four of the giant skeletons to reach it, but head to the bonfire before talking to anyone or exploring further.

Seath was raping me and I barely killed him on my third try. I later learned that the Crystal Ring Shield renders the fight piss easy, even in NG+. :-\

I haven't joined the Forest Covenant. How long will it take to reap all the benefits? and is that the only way to gain Fog Ring?

I've logged 92 hours into this game. A lot of it went into grinding Souls in the forest the "honest" way. I think I've been honest enough already, and earned the right to save time :maf

(I'll pretend I've been grinding in the forest for a few hours :shh)

pretty sure it's the only way to get the fog ring.  as for how long it will take, it depends on luck and how good you're at PvP.  can be done in under an hour for sure.

the way it works is awesome.  you wear a ring and randomly are summoned into a fight online.  It's always in the forest and sometimes another forest cov member joins you.  you don't need to be human to be summoned.  just wear the ring and play as you would.

the ring can be really helpful.  dying in the pvp takes you back to the bonfire and you keep all your souls.  winning the pvp spawns you back where you were summoned from, plus replenishes all your flasks and magic.

and seath isn't bad without the ring.  wear the cursebite ring (the boss fight was the only time I was cursed in the entire game), cut off its tail (you get a sword too), and you've pretty much won at that point.

actually, most of the big bosses
spoiler (click to show/hide)
nito, seath, four kings, and the final one, bed of chaos
[close]
were almost too easy.

hardest boss by far was that anor londo duo.  I probably could have done it alone once I got my pyromancy all good, but I got so fed up I just summoned two people and they helped a lot.  shit, they did most of the work.

Smough and Ornstein aren't that bad if you keep away from Smough and Kill Ornstein first, using my Zwei I just kept backing away from Smough staying locked on Ornstein as much as possible, blocking the shit out of everything and getting the odd hit in on Ornstein. With Smoughs second form just kite him or circle around a pillar while he continually misses you. First time I tried killing Smough first, that was a big mistake I don't think I could solo that...

I don't even know what the sword is.  It's one of those large swords too heavy to use.  I only had enough strength to use the drake sword one handed.  After that, all my points went into endurance, the magic one to get three slots, dexterity, and by the end, vitality.  I played through most of the game with 12 vitality.  Lots and lots of dodging.

biggest challenging in the centipede fight is seeing.  the stage is all lava except for a few land areas by the walls.  if the demon gets close, the camera goes fucking crazy because it's trying not to see through the wall but it has no other option.

Have you ever tried adjusting the "wall hug adjustment" camera option in the setting menu?

I never did, but it might alleviate some of the camera's frantic behavior.

I was just killed by that centipede guy :( Solaire just ran in and started hacking away and my camera spazzed out against the wall next thing I know I was being eaten.

Just read up on that Crystal Ring Shield :o Wow. I just got the Dragon King Axe to +4, and if it takes scaling into account I've nearly got a Large Club to +15. It's funny how they hyped up DkS as not having the cheese factor of DeS but so far there's hardly been a single boss/area without some simple method of winning. This seems like it will make any boss trivial dealing 1k+ per hit at range :lol

Trying to cut the tail while using the wrong weapon, shield, and armor combination was futile. The thing shaved 90% of my health in one hit.

Yes, the Crystal Ring Shield was useless.

I'm gonna try again using the Zwei, Gold-Hemmed armor set, Fireplate Ring, and a shield with good physical and fire resistance. I need that Orange Charred Ring.

Good idea I used the Giants Shield, some light armour and the Zwei and got that centipede drop randomly, didn't even know he had one then some slug thing dropped off which I killed then looted the ring. Problems I had were his feet stamp move and the one where he picks you up and eats you, as long as I got away from them the Giants Shield comfortably blocked everything else.  Dunno what use the charred ring is though really, I picked up some loot in the lava while wearing it but I assume it's probably possible to get it while not wearing the ring too (suicide lava sprinting).

Also, got that Demons Great Axe up to +12, shit is BOSS. I still use the Zwei often for regular PvM but the Demons Great Axe (better than my Dragon King Great Axe +4 with my current Strength of 50) + Crystal Ring Shield is a certified winning combo in boss fights. Still suck at PvP, got boned in Tomb of Giants by some guy and his Shotel that raped me right through my shield, I didn't realise Shotels ignored shield defense, makes them a much more interesting weapon....

Hahahaha, unequip the ring and try walking in the lava!

Words can't express how sorry I feel for whoever misses this drop. I mean imagine having to deal with the massive HP drops while facing those dinosaurs!

Speaking of Lava and dinosaurs: Trying to recover your blood stain in Izalith's lava pool is almost impossible :lol

I'm just glad the dinos don't respawn, and that they seem to accidentally harm themselves somehow while performing the jumping attack. Half of them are dead without lifting a finger. Weird.

Edit:

How're you supposed to use the Crystal Ring Shield? the wiki says it destroys the centipede, but unless I'm doing something wrong, the L2 attack doesn't seem that effective.

True, I went down to Lost Izilith but flagged that joint before getting into anything serious with the dinos and went and did Tomb Of Giants. Gotta beat Nito then I'll go try out the Four Kings and grind some Darkwraiths for Titanite Chunks.

Put a high damage weapon in your right hand and the crystal ring shield in your left hand then the L2 will deal twice your right hand weapons damage and it takes scaling into account so if you've got 46 or more STR you'll want to wield something like an upgraded Demons Great Axe (gotten from Taurus demons)

Is it true that there's a shortcut that skips the terrible parts of Izalith, or is it a shortcut you unlock by at least going through the area once?

Ohhhh, no wonder I wasn't doing any damage. I had the Pyro Glove in my right hand (to cast Sweat Flash) thinking the Ring's L2 attack would suffice. :derp

Fuck that. I'm past that dreadful part anyways. It's not so bad when you have the ring, no souls to lose and try to outrun the Dinosaurs. There isn't a single item there worth picking up, imo, as long as you rest at the secret bonfire anyone should be alright.

Anyhow, the shortcut can be accessed from Demon's Ruin if you take a right at the cross path before the Demon Firesage's fog door.

Edit:

I just died twice at the Bed of Chaos, and lost lots and lots of legit souls in the process :'(

The fight seems pretty simple after figuring it out, but I'm too disheartened and I need some sleep. I'll try it again tomorrow.

duping souls is so common for you that you felt the need to specifically call the lost souls out as "legit"? no sympathy for you! :maf

well gad damn. centipede is an ass. my enchanted falchion did pitiful damage, my lightning spear does the same, pyromancy is useless... Guess I'll farm til I get enough intelligence to use homing soul mass? Or do I need crystal homing soul mass? Dunno where logan is at this point, last I saw him I freed him from the archives' prison.

Oh man, if you have INT 24 then you should totally go for Crystal Soulmass/Logan Catalyst combo.

You'll find Logan in the Archives, sitting in the dark room opposite to where the stairs that leads to the Crystal Cave entrance is located. Buy all his sorceries (you'll need some grindan for that, around 100k or more), then talk to him. He'll start hallucinating and mumbling unintelligible crazy talk. Exit the room, reload the game, go back to the room and you'll find a chest with good loot where he was sitting. Next, go back to where you first encountered Seath (beginning of the Archives > wall-hugging elevator, accessible from the first floor. The switch is on the right side, not so obvious), you'll find a semi-nude crazy Logan hollow in Seath's chambers. Kill him, and claim the remaining loot, including the Crystal Soulmass and Logan's Catalyst. Both kick serious ass.

24? ugh! I farmed my way up to 18 so I could use homing soul mass only to find it being ass! and now I have to grind even more!? :maf dex build was a mistake. trying to add strength to balance it was a second mistake. Intelligence is apparently needed

Yeah, unlike Demon Souls, Dex builds are total ass in this game :(

Strength is dwarfed by Lightning too.

Unless 1.04 makes some serious changes, I might start a new character focusing on pyromancy, sorcery, and turn melee as soon as I get the lightning spear.

Is there a firm date for 1.04? or even a confirmed change-log?

No date, but there's a change log posted on From's Japanese site, listing the most important changes only. The changes include:
- Patching the infinite item and soul glitch.
- Tweaking the Fog Ring and Magic Shield.
- Weapon balancing, which will probably deal with stats scaling.
- Improved online/PvP matchmaking and stability.

I'm playing a DEX build on the side, doesn't feel too bad. Min/Maxing is really important though, nearly every soul level is pumped into DEX with END second and VIT last, between the wide array of weapons and pyromancies it feels good to me and can only get better with the patch.

Just reached the final area with my main char, gonna get some of those weapon upgrade cheevs and finish off some sidequests before going up against Gwyn.

- Increased Drop rates for certain Covenant items and Equipment Enhancement materials which had extremely low drop rates.

- Adjusted the Item Discovery increase rate which scales with Humanity levels.

- The amount of Faith required to join the Sunlight Covenant is now 25 instead of 50. The formula for reducing it with multiplayer remains the same.

Yay, sounds easier for 1000 now

woohoo. Looking forward to this patch.

I'm just going through the Catacombs atm, once I get Nito, it's final boss time. Will do the Logan sidequest to get all the sorceries first, then get straight into NG+

Full list of 1.04 changes: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=450602

That is one serious changelong! And it's already out? :omg

I might start a NG+ right away now.

(Although I have to say, I'm glad I was able to abuse the Soul Glitch at least with one character when I had the chance. :teehee)

Edit:

Speaking of patches, on the PS3, players can basically uninstall patch > abuse exploits and glitches > update, right?

If so, some of the PvP issues will never go away completely.

The 360 users have it just as easy; just refuse the update, or delete the cache, play offline until you get to where you want to be, then connect.

The bigger issue will be fixes to the Magic Shield and Fog Ring, I suspect, since levels will still be kept discreet, right?

The bonfire was lit -> Bonfire lit
You Defeated -> Victory Achieved
You Regained -> Retrieval

disgusting revisionists.

Awww. I liked those :(

Actually I thought they were intentional. Good job, From.

People told me on GAF that saves from later version aren't compatible with older ones. So basically people can't be on 1.04 > uninstall patch > exploit/glitch > update.
