Capra Demon just buttfucked me pretty hard. He's an asswipe.

The Capra Demon is irritating the shit out of me.  Half the time I go to fight him he wipes me out right away because a dog blocks my path to run past him.  One time I ran in there he was already attacking as I stepped through the fog; died almost instantly.  He's probably not even that difficult by himself, but I'm having a bitch of a time just getting into a position where I can get rid of the dogs.

lololol summoned Solaire and scuffled with the gaping dragon. the gnawing vagina drop attack killed vanquished the shit out of him super fast. then I was killed by the dragon doing the jump attack again and again. very difficult to get a visual on him in the air and it seemed very hard to dodge. I suppose I should stay closer to his face so he attempts the vagina drop instead. Dunno what happens if he pins me with it though. might be one of those awful multi-hit grab attacks.

Haha, I just had my first death. I believed a message that said "try jumping," left in front of a reachable-looking bridge at the beginning if Landblurnblah.

(Is there a way to read the name of the place, other than the first flashing notice?)

Wait, you seriously, only died once before getting to that point? You didn't die during the tutorial with the demon? That demon owned me several times. "Jump down and hold RB while falling to attack the head!" GREAT! While I was figuring that out, the demon jumped up and bashed me off my nice little ledge. Then he wiped his ass with me.

Yeah, I didn't die during the tutorial. But that's mostly to watching a video of someone playing through it (Giantbomb's quicklook?) so I had a clear idea of what I was supposed to do i.e. plunging attack. My 8 fireballs took care of the rest, iirc.

there are some secrets in this game that are impossible to find without a guide or online.  like, you'll be in a random place with five identical walls and slashing the fourth will open it up and reveal an awesome item.  I always go back and rate the message that gave me the hint.

He's probably not even that difficult by himself, but I'm having a bitch of a time just getting into a position where I can get rid of the dogs.

what I did, and it was purely based on luck, was to immediately run towards the stairs on the left, then go right onto the borders of a bridge.  The Capra demon can still follow you there, but there's a good chance that he'll just fall.  The dogs come first and you should have enough time to kill them easily.  If you have soul arrow or ranged magic, you can use that on the demon.  Or if you time it, you can do a plunging attack.  Either way, the pattern was: jump down, attack, run upstairs, repeat.

lololol summoned Solaire and scuffled with the gaping dragon. the gnawing vagina drop attack killed vanquished the shit out of him super fast. then I was killed by the dragon doing the jump attack again and again. very difficult to get a visual on him in the air and it seemed very hard to dodge. I suppose I should stay closer to his face so he attempts the vagina drop instead. Dunno what happens if he pins me with it though. might be one of those awful multi-hit grab attacks.

never ever ever get in front of the gaping dragon.  just book it and get away if he is.  first thing you want to do, assuming you killed the soul arrow shooting gun on the top floor, which you should do before starting the fight, is get rid of the dragon's tail.  If you're lucky, Solaire will attack him from the front and distract it enough to chop off the tail.  No tail means he can't attack you if you're behind (normally his tail whip is deadly).  just make sure you're light enough to run and dodge quickly.

If you drop items in the world they will disappear when you die and become vagrants that are enemies that roam online in various peoples' games and become more and more powerful if they aren't killed. I think.

I started playing this recently.  Picked the thief class and am in the Undead Burg now.  Haven't died too much, but the lack of ranged weaponry is starting to hurt...did I miss a bow somewhere, and is it worth restarting as a magic user instead?

Couple complaints about this game, though I haven't thoroughly investigated them, so I may be wrong (hopefully I am):

1. The online system is completely inferior to Demon's Souls, for two reasons. Firstly, because they split players into different instances, you won't have the ENTIRE community around to summon your soul signs, or to invade, or anything. Just a fractured portion. Now I'm not sure how they do grouping, maybe they split it by zones (ie. if 100 players are in Darkroot, then they'll all be in one online group, and if someone moves to Andor Londo, then they'll join the Ando group, etc). That would be ideal and would make the split groups a non-issue.

But more importantly, the human/hollow system is not as good as Demon's Souls' spirit/human system. In DS1, you would revive automatically after defeating a boss. That's not the case here - you have to spend humanity in order to revive. On top of that, in DS1, the advantages to being human were obvious: you had 25% more health, and you could switch out your Cling Ring for something else. In this, there differences between Human and Hollow are really small, so no one is ever in human form. That makes random PvP a lot more rare, which is not good.

I'm sure there will be PvP hotspots that everyone will gravitate to, but random invasions basically never happen in this game, which is a real shame.

2. Weapon scaling. Lightning weapons and fire weapons are too good. Why pump your strength/dex up to 40-50 and beyond when you can just get the bare minimum to use a weapon, and upgrade to +5 lightning and start doing 500 damage per hit? You could dump all of those extra points into vitality and endurance, or max out magic/faith if you want. Normal +15 weapons are strong for sure, but you need all of those points in str/dex to make up the difference.

Perhaps there are lightning resistance sets that nullify the bonus lightning weapons give you, I'm not sure but I'll have to check that out further. That's pretty much the only way PvP won't be boiled down to just a handful of optimal builds.

@lyte: you'll find some bows eventually, and there's also a merchant in the Undead Burge (or maybe he's in the Parish, don't remember) that sells bows and arrows, so I wouldn't worry about it for now.

I'm having trouble with the Giant Stone Soldiers right now. Am I supposed to be Darkroot Garden or was I supposed to be someplace more manageable? Everything in this area goes down easily beside them. I can manage to take one at a time, but man don't they just love to gang-rape my poor hallowed person.

Edit: Never mind. I started getting the hang of their attacks, and I'm leaning towards F+R2 more to quickly finish them off. It's still a slow process compared to the others.

In DS1, you would revive automatically after defeating a boss. That's not the case here - you have to spend humanity in order to revive.

If feel there's an upside to this, and that is you choose whenever you want to be human, instead of forced into becoming one. I know I used to find it being forced the human form an inconvenience in Demon Souls, especially when I'm trying to maintain Tendencies, so I used to commit suicide all time in the Nexus to get rid of it. Now, it's possible that this will limit the rate of PvP and invasions in general, but not when the advantages of becoming a human are plenty. The only one I know of so far, other than kindling bonfires, is taking advantage of the modifier; I heard that you can't gain any bonuses from the counter unless you're in human form. It's less obvious, I'm with you, but then again this series is all about vagueness.

I bet when all is said and done, PvP will be filled with more people who intend to partake in it, rather than poor unsuspecting players. Surely that's a good thing, no?

Edit: According to the wiki...

- Weapon damage modifier. Increases damage with Chaos upgrade path (add link).
- Increases damage with specific pyromancies (unconfirmed).
- Increase Item Discovery Rate.
- Increase Curse Resist.
- Increases all defenses.

I'm pretty early in the game, so I don't know how valuable, or big, these bonuses are.

Forced invasions on unsuspecting people were part of the fun in Demon's Souls though. It added to the tension. If you get rid of that, it just turns into 1v1 PvP fighting game, which is still fun, but it's very different from random PvP. Even World of Warcraft, for example, became less fun when they added battleground instances to the game. People stopped going out into the world to PvP and instead waited in a queue in order to play capture the flag. I just always find natural PvP more fun than preplanned fights.

You also don't need to be in human form to get the increased item droprate, it's solely dependent on how much humanity you have stocked. There are advantages to being human of course, but they're not as big as it was in Demon's.

That being said, while these things bother me, I still think the game is amazing and better than Demon's Souls as a whole. It's a great evolution of the formula, but they messed some things up along the way.

I definitely see it as a mean of balancing the online component. They probably realized that many players were playing game offline because of that (I know I was one of them), and they needed as many people online as possible for half of their new mechanics to work.

On the other hand, I think the variety and general value that the online of this game adds should be enough encouragement for players to stay in their human forms and participate in PvP or Co-op. They really fleshed it out.

I haven't gotten any drops from bosses so far.

Then again I spam them with spells and I heard you need physical finishers for some.  I don't even know how a physical person is supposed to fight both gargoyles launching fire from in front and behind you.  I got lucky and heavy soul arrow'd one to death right as the other appeared so I only had to deal with one.

OK, that makes a little sense. However, I didn't even know how to wield the fireballs when I was in the tutorial. I'd got up to Undead Burg, and was thinking "WTF, why am I suffering for a magic user's weakness, when I can't even cast?!" And as mentioned, my first attempt at figuring out the plunging attack was... comedic.

I've finished the Tutorial boss physically, and the Taurus Demon physically, no drops. I capped the Black Knight in Undead Burg with fireballs, he dropped the predetermined Something-tear Ring.

So far I've fought boss-ish-wise:

-tutorial boss
-big monster thing on bridge in undead burg
-boar in undead burg/parish
-gargoyles in undead parish
-A bunch of tall powerful mini-boss knights in undead parish
-One of those dark knight guys in undead burg in the lower area and one in undead parish on top of the spiral staircase

About 5 hours in, lvl.18.

pretty sure black knight is either those powerful mini-boss knights or that last one you mentioned.  if you go back to the asylum, there are two of them around.  but they're much stronger than the ones you've faced and hidden around corners ready to stab you

I can't play this again until Thursday night.  shit is painful.  I quit my last game after picking up a bunch of cool equipment.

That is the one. He's in an otherwise meaningless hallway, facing a dead end where a corpse with a loot-drop is waiting. It's a stairway down, where there is also a stairway up to the tower leading to the Taurus Demon. For some reason the wiki doesn't have my Get Your Ass Up A Ladder solution as a means of dealing with him, and they /do/ list the sniper's nest, which makes no sense.

I'm level 15 now, though I've invested levels pointlessly in Attunement, and I bought a Repair Kit though I don't really have a need so far.

I've got a couple Titanite Shards now, and Pine Resin. Should I be using them on weapons I have now, or hording them?

DEFINITELY hoard your pine resin. It only works for a limited time, and some serious bad-boys have a weakness to lightning.

Use the titanite to upgrade your weapon of choice. The big burly blacksmith in Undead Parish can sell you more for a pittance

Capra Demon was easy after farming in the 20,000 soul forest place. I took this back and bought Demon's Souls. I need to beat it first. So in celebration I played it for 8 and a half STRAIGHT hours with no breaks. I beat World 2, and I made it to the boss of World 1 but got my ass handed to me. I made it to 5-4 as well and haven't touched the other 2 worlds. I'm soul level 50. :D

After I beat this a few times I'll restart Dark Souls. You seriously just enter this zen moment with these games where everything just clicks and you rape faces. Parryin, ripostin, backstabbin, and butt rapin!

best part of the farming spot is losing 10k+ souls and not bothering to reclaim them.

and maybe I'm crazy, but at least until Blighttown, Dark Souls is easier than Demon's Souls.  The one thing I'm hoping for in Dark Souls are tough, fast, human sized bosses.

Depths are pretty nasty.  Easy to get lost.  So dark.  Enemies are easy though outside the butcher guys who still aren't bad.

Got 10k souls and had no idea where the next bonfire was down there in the maze-y darkness so just warped back to initial bonfire.  Is there something I should be saving up my souls to buy?  Like a key to the farming area?  Would be good to know before I use it all to gain 3 levels.

I decided to start over.  My first vendor is dead, I wasted two Fire Keeper Souls and most of all, my stats were boogered, so fuck it.

Went Pyromancer this time with a better idea of how to allocate stats.  About two hours in at level 16, already have more endurance, vitality and strength than my level 28 thief, at the gargoyles, have the Drake Sword and haven't died yet.  Woop woop.

After hearing about the Drake Sword, I used the IGN guide to farm it.

Or tried to. I'd had an earlier drop of Light Crossbow, so I stocked up on bolts for that. Unfortunately, the crossbow doesn't allow free aiming.

So I rolled around Undead Burg some more, grinding small enemies to get the 1K Souls for a bow and arrow. YAY!

Except the bow needs 12 DEX, and mine's 11. So I grind small enemies to get another 2K Souls to level up and get my DEX up to 12.

I felt kind of chicken, sitting down there plonking arrows at exactly the same spot and timing, but now I have a two-handed ugly sword.

The game says, "You can't wield this one-handed; you need two hands." So I do that, and promptly realize fighting 2H is very, very different than shield/sword combo.

It was an evening-long session of "yeah, but..."

So where do I buy the skull lure? I want to bongo that boar.

Also was looking for alternate paths, went up, up, up in the Undead Parrish tower, the topmost landing had another Black Knight on it. (I went back down, very, very quietly.)

Raise your STR to 16 to wield the Drake with one hand. A shield (with 100% physical defense) is essential to your current build, methinks.

You can aim the crossbow, use the camera. It's a little jank, but it can be done. Since the dragon tail sways between the same two spots, you just gotta get the timing down.

And Allure Skulls are on the body located on the bridge above the Armored Boar.

You just won't be able to use them again in your current playthrough. I'm about to go around the world and kill everyone now as well.

Shah, Raban, thanks.

I realized that the crossbow bolt was going the same direction each time I fired, but I was not having any luck figuring out the arc vs. the center of the screen. I just assumed it wouldn't ever actually connect. Or at least not consistently for the 40 or so shots needed to get the sword.

I'll be putting points into STR from here on out; I just wish I hadn't wasted my previous levels on Attunement, since I've got TWO unused slots there now.  :-\

Defeated the Capra Demon on my first try 8)

Killed the two dogs right away, then fought him mano a mano. Didn't even bother with going up the stairs after I killed the dogs to land any plunging attacks. Where to next?

Are there any bonfires near the beginning of the Depths or should I backtrack? I'm low on flasks and have a sizable soul count that I don't intend to lose.
