Had you tried that as a strategy? There are lots of spots where kicking a guy has a huge effect, I'm finding. If there's a ledge, and the enemy has his back to the drop, I'll Left Stick forward + RB to kick the guy. Even if he doesn't drop off, it frequently leads to an unreadied shield, that wide-open pose, ripe for an attack.

enemies were too large to kick

right now I'm just wishing there was a way to quick travel.  the world has gotten too large. it's no longer like "this is annoying/hard, I'll go do something else."  it's "this sucks, but it will take maybe 30+ minutes just to go check out another area."

goddamnti the boss is ridiculous

spoiler (click to show/hide)
both of them attack at the exact same time and though each other.  I'm working on the fatty and a lightning bolt comes through his stomach.  I roll away from one attack and get attacked mid-roll by the other.  they stick so close together there's no room to even breathe.

worst part is that I spent humanity to summon the NPC and he doesn't follow me into the boss fight wtf? at least if I had a dummy there to take damage, it wouldn't be so bad.

:teehee

I spent like 3 hours on them the other night in NG+. It's a tough fight.

BTW, you only get the soul and armor of the guy you kill last, so make sure you know whose stuff you want. I think Ornstein's stuff will be most useful to most people; his armor is great (I'm using it now - replaced my Black Knight set with it) and his spear is probably decent.

the Four Kings

Not looking forward to them, I'm actually not sure if I'll be able to kill them either since the fight is a DPS race. I'm at level 100 right now, so hopefully I'll be able to survive. I want to avoid grinding and co-op if at all possible... though I'm sure I wouldn't find anyone to summon for co-op even if I tried. Either the online is terrible or there's practically no one at level 80+, because I haven't seen one soul sign, nor have I been summoned.

edit: Beat them. Wasn't too bad actually, just had to use Iron Flesh + Smough's armor. Now I can finally join the Darkwraith covenant.

I spent Humanity to reverse Hollowing, Kindled my bonfire at Undead Parrish, and was Human before the Gargoyle fight. That's necessary to summon help, right?

I summoned King Solaire, and he took the brunt of the gargoyle's spunk. Before I knew it, the 2nd one had shown up and was vomiting napalm all over the roof. I used dual-handed strong strikes and all but broke the Drake Sword during the fight, but I got both of them on the first go. Only ended up using 5 Estus, but I was a jumpy-dodgy freakazoid.

I got both tail weapons, I think!

THEN I RUNG THAT BELL.

Next I decided that's I'd finally grown a pair, so I went down and faced the one-legged demon just down from the Parrish's blacksmith. I got that one in the first go as well. Wandered out to the gardens, saw the glowing roses, was terrified and ran back to the bonfire, wondering where to go next.

WHERE TO GO, BORITOS?

Also, FWIW, I have bumped my END to 16 or 17, but even though I'm at 28/49 Carry Load, I'm still REALLY slow. Is there a limitation for passing half your Carry Load?

I went back to Undead Burg basement and fought Capra Demon and went to the depths myself, but you can also go through the garden now fairly comfortably.

I'm up to Blighttown. Fuck this place. Where can I find better gear to deal with all the poison shit?

Not much to say about NG+ really, it's just like Demon's Souls. As soon as the credits are done rolling, they toss you right back into your jail cell with all of your gear. You lose practically all of your key items, like embers, repair boxes, keys, some rings, etc. Estus flask upgrades carry over, so before you finish your first playthrough, you'll probably want to collect every Fire Keeper soul that's available. Enemies hit harder, have more HP, and give more souls, though the percentage increase varies between each enemy. Weaker enemies get the biggest boost, while the stronger ones get a smaller boost. I think everyone gives 3x as many souls as before though.

The guide says that in your first NG+, enemies' health values increase from 1.5 to 2.5x, attack power increases from 1.3 to 2.3x, and defense increases by 1.6x, or remains unchanged. Then in every subsequent NG+ run, all values increase from 1.07 to 1.25x, until it tops out at NG+6.

It seems like MAYBE if you wait for them both to stop shooting, the one on the left won't attack you when you make a run to the right.  Then you just gotta goad the other one into whipping out his sword and falling over before he hits you with anything.

Finally found a suitable replacement for my lightning sword. Got the Black Knight Great Axe up to +5. With 50 strength, it hits for like 580? Don't remember, but it hits pretty damn hard. 2H R2 lunge does 790ish. :bow

Also started using the Elite Knight armor. Upgraded all of it to +8 or +9, and it's basically the best armor I've seen. The defense is comparable to Havel's, but it only weighs like half as much.

You only need to upgrade your pyro glove (with souls) to improve your pyromancy spells. It doesn't scale with stats at all, it's entirely based on how good your glove is.

That, combined with the Pyromancer starting at sou level 1 makes me think that class was tailor made for people who want to beat the game at level 1. I'll probably give that a shot in the future.

Yeah, lightning seems like it's the way to go, at least until you're a really high level, where stat scaling starts to make regular weapons somewhat equal. Though I guess an Iaito +15 with a Greater Magic Weapon enchant would out-damage the lightning one, at least until the enchant wears off.

Ok, so there are two routes ahead of me, either I go further down to the lower level of the Depths, where I assume a Boss is waiting is waiting for me, and a door next to the merchant selling the bottomless box. Is that the door that takes me to Blighttown?

If so I should get back to the lower levels, but before that, should I backtrack and look for curse-lifting items (if any are were even available) or should I just push through. Advancing in this game scares the shit out of me.

You can get duplicates of everything, since everything respawns in each cycle of the game. It's good to get items that only have 1 guaranteed drop in each cycle that you'll need more than 1 of if you want everything, like Titanite Slabs.

There is a boss a little further ahead, and that door does lead to Blighttown. You won't need any curse curing items though, since you've already gone past the frogs (I think). I wouldn't backtrack at all, but there is a shortcut in the area that leads from the bonfire to that room. That will be useful if you die on the boss.

And I found that shortcut, I almost missed it. Thanks.

The merchant has some serious equipment to sell. I can't afford any of it, but I'm contemplating to farm some souls to get a at least one piece.

Blighttown doesn't have curses, it's just poison and toxic (and bad framerate). Poison isn't so bad, but toxic is annoying, especially since the guys who shoot toxic bullets are hard to see.

I am going to give Mooligooogoo Butterfly a couple more tries, and then I'm moving on to... probably a different game.

Maybe I'll go try the Burg basement assassins and the demon which lies beyond it. If I can ring the second bell, I might feel like going on for a bit more, but reading about the kind of crap you guys are facing, and realizing I'm still being eaten by vicious ferns in Darkroot... well, it's disheartening.

How many Blooming Purple Moss Clump would be appropriate for Blighttown on average? I have 7 but 9k souls that I'm willing to spend on more if needed.

Also, these are my current stats:

Level - 25

Vit - 15
Att - 12
End - 20
Str - 18
Dex - 12
Int - 11
Faith - 8

Up until this point, I was focusing on the minimum Str and Dex so that I can wield some of my equipment, while putting more points towards End to a lesser extent Vit. Are the latter two enough for a character at my level, and should I invest more point toward the other bonus/requirement parameters?

I'm not focusing on magic other than pyromancies, which don't rely on INT and so far I leaned toward a melee play style. I feel like I'm relying too much on the Drake and I'm close to a point where I'll regret not planning ahead and investing points in other areas.

I've only used a few Blooming Purple Moss Clumps in all of the time I've spent playing. If I get hit with toxic, I just ignore it and keep using my Estus Flasks until I reach a bonfire or die, or until I'm all out of Flasks, then I'll use the moss. But I always horde items in every RPG, so that's probably not the smartest thing to do.

Your stats look fine to me, not sure what you want to do with them though. If you want 50 strength, then just keep focusing on that and endurance, with vitality here and there. You can start using a Zweihander once you have 20-something strength, and that weapon's good enough to last you a very long time. That's what I did anyway. I finished my first playthrough with 23 vitality I think, so it's not the most important stat to aim for in the beginning imo. But that's just me, I prefer to go for damage output above all else.

Speaking of the Zweihander, when should I go to the Catacombs? I haven't bothered myself with it up until this point.

Zwei is just a big, slow greatsword. You can 1-hand or 2-hand it, doesn't matter. Its 2H attacks are really good though (especially R2), I used them a lot.

The Catacombs are really annoying. The boss at the end is piss easy, so you could probably take him out at the start of the game if you want, but the skeletons and mages inside are relentless. I wouldn't go in there until you could kill the skeletons in 1 or 2 hits.

After you beat the Catacombs, stay the hell away from the Tomb of Giants, unless you're a high level. I'd do that area last.

Too bad there's practically no one to invade or co-op with at lvl 100. Forever alone.

I still need to try the final area before I give up on high level PvP.

1.04 patch notes

http://darksouls.fromsoftware.jp/online/

I have no idea what any of this says, but someone ran it through Google translator and this came out:

Quote
It seems like it says:
-Fixes for Magic Shield / Greater Magic Shield
-Fixes for Fog Ring
-Fixes for Tranquil Walk of Peace
-Matchmaking improvements
-Dupe glitch fixed
-Adjusting weapon balance (?)

Wow. They are actually listening. Now if they do something about the overpowered elemental weapons, this game will be ace. edit: they're still updating their page, sounds like they ARE adjusting weapon balance. :bow :bow

Maybe someone who can read Japanese (Bebpo?) can correct translation errors? I just google translated that and tried to make sense of it.

So after my last post, I went back and gave the Moonlight Butterfly what-for. I had a realization about... well, not so much its strength, but the weakness in the defense I was playing.

Mainly, I was using a Heater Shield against exclusively Magic attacks, and was acting as an "ammunition sponge." I've been running shield/sword, I wasn't really considering other forms of defense.

I swapped out my armor for lighter gear, which sped me up a lot. Using dodge, and carefully managing my lock-on/unlock state to RUN THE HELL AWAY during some sequences put me in a much better position.

So... I'm somewhat sucked back in.

When I read about the troubles you all are having, I'm still convinced that I'm going to have an even harder time of it, and will eventually give up. But I've made one more step forward.

Good for you, brohun.

It's true, the Butterfly attacks are purely Magic based and none of the shields you have at that point can block a considerable amount of it, but thankfully rolling around while staying close to the butterfly will do the trick, until it closes in and lands near you.

I have to admit, I rarely go into any boss battle without reading up on his/her/its attack pattern and weaknesses, so don't get too discouraged and check the wiki before giving up. Usually the tactics are fairly straightforward.

It's true, the Butterfly attacks are purely Magic based and none of the shields you have at that point can block a considerable amount of it, but thankfully rolling around while staying close to the butterfly will do the trick, until it comes closes in and lands near you.

I have to admit, I rarely go into any boss battle without reading up on his/her/its attack pattern and weaknesses, so don't get too discouraged and check the wiki before giving up. Usually the tactics are fairly straightforward.
TRUF! I am wishing I'd thought even further ahead, and had Magic Shield from the Firelink sorcerer in my grimoire before heading to Moogly-Googly Butterfly's encounter ten times.

It's a shame to take a game like this, which is clearly the result of a lot of love and polish, and compare it to something as janky as the THQ Conan, but they both suffer from a similar disparity: the fighting of multiple opponents feels good and is satisfying, while the boss battles suffer.

The big difference is that Conan's bosses suffer from bad camera and questionable control decisions... oh, wait, no, that's the same. They both have those problems.

OK, start again: the difference is that the Conan bosses are logically internally inconsistent, even across their own phases, the landscape geometry only ever seems to be a problem for the player's character, whereas the bosses in Dark Souls are robust and deep, with hidden advantages and disadvantages left to the players to discover and share. There's an almost-poetry to the handling of bosses in Dark Souls.

But it's worth noting that, as much as I love language, I hate poetry.

PvP is so fun when it actually works. I'm invading people once like every 30 minutes, but I'm thinking this might be because it's early morning in the US.

Anyway, this last guy I invaded was still at the start of the area, fighting a Black Knight. Once I saw where he was I started sprinting toward him, and I guess he panicked or something so he wound up getting killed by the Black Knight before I even got near him. Then he indicted me into the book of the guilty. :lol

Hopefully it's busier later today. If not, I'll probably start a side character and bring him up to the 50s or so, and start invading Anor Londo.

Havel Ring getto!

However, at my strength, it's only good for sprinting in chainmail, not the Elite Knight Armor I'd just found.

I'll experiment, see if losing the helm from the Armored Tusk helps any.

How much does armor actually help? I mean, I know it's good to just not get hit, but does armor subtract damage from the affected part, or what?

Best farming spot in the game...

Literally a spot  :lol

That's epic.

EPIC failure of AI programmer!

Sceneman said this would net 6K per trip, but it looks like there's only 4K? ...and was one of the guys there at the end invisible?

you can net 7k if you get the axe guy too, but I generally just drag the magician, the monk, and invisible guy down for a cool 6k

I wonder if there's a combination of items to multiply that amount. In Demon Souls the best farming spot used to net between 6-10k? but with a Pure Black tendency, some equipment, and NG+ every 45 second trip yielded a sum north of 20k souls :drool

Havel Ring getto!

Oh, OH, RUCKKKY!

I took stab at this before farming souls last night and the guy still destroyed me. I'll give it another shot, maybe with better equipment and a cheesy strategy too. I need that ring.

It's probably easiest if you don't have any equipment so you can run at full speed.  The guy is gonna one shot kill you no matter what, but you can pretty easily cheese him out by circling him and backstabbing over and over.

Somehow I managed to kill him using an even cheesier tactic; he's programmed to stay in the tower, so if I lure him to the upper level's door he'll stop right at the door step. :lol

the fuck is up with ceaseless discharge? I triggered the boss fight by grabbing some loot, then I booked back to the gate hoping I could pass through again, but I couldn't. so he slammed down on me, but died from a three hit combo or there abouts. either fool was mighty weak or something fucked up. got souls for it though, dunno if I was supposed to get a drop from him.
