I'm only at world 3, but there's nothing I've encountered so far that would be classified as muscle memory or trial and error.  There was this time in the first minecart level that I didn't realize the spiky thorn ceiling was on the same plane of play of me, but thats about it.

Wait til some of the K stages, part of level 4, and a few later levels :P

Still disagree, the only times I felt like there was trial and error was when you're introduced to a new type of crumbling platform.  It's pretty rare and usually on the lookout for it.  Mine cart levels and rocket barrel levels are all about reflexes, and I think thats what people are misattributing to trial and error.

Some initial impressions.  I never played the Wii version.

- A few levels in and this already blows away the Rare games
- This game tries its best to be a DKC game and succeeds there
- In the Rare tradition, there's all kinds of various shit to collect in each level.  Not sure if I'm going to bother with that or not.

It's a very solid platformer.  Looking forward to spending some time on this game this weekend.

I picked it up, but I kind of dont want to touch it until I finish Soul Hackers. I played maybe 1 level of the Wii version when I ILLEGALLY DOWNLOADED it

Great platformer, wish it was 60 fps but it's nice to finally play it on traditional controls.

I know it's all doom n gloom in the Xbox thread but these days there are way too many great games and too little time for me. Every other day there's something that sounds cool.. like those recent Mortal Kombat and Joe Danger PC ports announced.

I picked it up and have already played it more than the Wii version. Not having to waggle to roll already makes this the superior version.

Wii version is legit great, and all that's different in the 3DS version is the frame rate and a new 'easy' mode, plus you don't need to waggle.  The few mine cart and rocket levels (reminiscent of that old helicopter in a cave flash game) suck.  It's worth dealing with that stuff for the main platforming stages.  Don't let the 'Donkey Kong Country' name fool you--this actually has creative level design, variety, and challenging platforming.

fwiw, I hated the Donkey Kong Country SNES games.  But I don't think Returns is better than Jungle Beat.

I think its actually very good.  In fact I liked it more than NSMB Wii, which was a great platformer with dumb waggle thrown in.

interesting. yeah, I hate DKC1-3 on SNES and consider them some of the most overrated platformers of all time. So that's definitely biasing me against it. Glad to hear you hate them too.

Other than some similar concepts and ideas from the first three (mine cart levels, instant death chase-levels) and remixed soundtracks, DCKR isn't much like the original DKC.  They play very differently.

Yeah the physics and health systems are a lot different in DKCR vs the SNES games. DKCR is also a lot more brutal in how often it offers DK barrels.

Really enjoying it so far. A few minor complaints but overall a really solid platformer. Not trying to grab every KONG letter which I suppose is why it doesn't feel very difficult so far.. up to world 4.

Not sure how someone could dislike the original DKC games but like this one. They all seem pretty good to me.

Made it to world 4 boss. I think I need a magnifying glass for the pickaxes the boss throws at you. Sometimes the camera zooms out so far you can barely see what's going on.

I'm going to be the outlier and say that I may prefer the original DKC trilogy.

I'm only trying to collect the KONG since that's all that's required to unlock the bonus levels. Plus I keep fucking missing one puzzle piece each level. All you get are stupid concept arts, so I don't give a fuck.
