what? Lemme guess, you think guns in real life can be aimed quickly?  And that soldiers are more than 3 feet tall?  And that there are colors other than brown?  And that shitloads of filters = good graphics?

Anyone interested in joining Demi for a Killzone 2 playalong?  I've yet to plug in my copy after my friends killed my buzz by laughing at how horrible it was when we were checking out the demo.

Sfags pressuring reviewers into dishing out A grades for Killzone 2 is their greatest accomplishment this gen.  It's amazing that the game only got 3 reviews under 80% when it is almost universally considered now merely mediocre.

seriously, i've seen the AI lauded but i got to say - it's no better than COD AI.

Ducky - tell me why ANYONE who has played Halo would look at this and say anything other than "WTF?! this is turgid arse"

Did you ever kick the difficulty up, or did you stick with the dolt difficulty? It makes a serious difference. Not that it makes it any less of a samey game, but individual enemy encounters kick ass.

Oh, and don't make me talk about Halo A.I. fuck-ups. Shoot space gorilla in the face, watch space gorilla paces two steps to the right, and then two steps to the left. Jump into warthog, get driven straight into a rock, several times. Which is amusing since the enemy behavior in Halo games is typically top notch.

If you are pimping Kz2 AI whilst dissing Halo AI you are chewing on shit. Simple as. For AI fuck ups - Killzone dudes standing next to clearly on fire canisters? Shooting off cover and them STILL taking cover behind an area that now has no cover?! etc etc...
and REFUCKING SPAWNING which DOESNT HAPPEN IN Kz2 BUT DOES ... quite a bit.

note : i am being a bit of a dick up above, but i think the idea that KZ AI is some sort of uberachievement is a LOOOOOONG draw that i simply don't buy into. There's way more "AI Glitches" than in Halo and that's even with most of the AI operating in confines and straight lines which surely passes even more kudos to Halo 1-X's mainly open environment AI, especially on Legendary which is fucking GREAT. Killzone was a few bits away from being awesome so i am WELL ON BOARD for KZ3 - like i say, i went through KZ2 twice. I don't see the great AI at all and comparisons to Rainbow 6 are, especially as you are a fan of R6 and so am i, way WAY too much for KZ. I would take a new R6 over KZ3 any day however i want to see how KZ3 turns out.

I'm not dissing Halo at all. Halo has some of the most remarkable battle moments around because of kick ass , but those examples weren't grabbed out of thin air. They stand out like crazy because the A.I. is otherwise so great. I guess it's the Brute factor, which would explain why Reach is kick ass awesome while Halo 2 and 3 are not. What Halo does that really no one else does is give you lots of different behaviors per battle. Grunts act one way, Elites another, and so forth. Killzone has none of that, and I hope they fix that with KZ3.

And I haven't once experienced the A.I. issues you list, except the canister thing. But then that's true for just about every game with exploding canisters, isn't it? One critical flaw that pretty much ruined one particular scene was when I discovered the A.I. spawn, and it seemed like the battle awareness simply hadn't kicked in at that point. So you could mow them down with no problem. Not cool when the battles are usually tense because of enemy brights.

Now seriously... Rainbow Six? The game with one or two critical pathfinding bugs per level, and the friendlies that can't get past one another, and instead crouch-stand-crouch while getting murdered? To make it all the more damning, you will lose if your team mates perish. Most hostile friendly A.I. system around. Gives me zero hope for the new command-less Ghost Recon. I'd still take a new Rainbow Six over just about any other shooter, but it sure as hell isn't because of the A.I.

It kicked ass until the ass had been kicked numb. Needed more variety. Also needed more pretty environments, as in say Gears of War. The ice shelf stuff in the previews for KZ3 is promising.

It was like one big battle. No change of pace or even much change in enemy encounters, just one intense infantry level and that was it. There was like one breather level, and that one was (surprise) set in some barren environment. The ice shelf thing looks more interesting than the entirety of KZ2.

It was the same problem with LBP.  The controls were garbage and since it's a precision type game the rest of the game is garbage.  Simple enough.

yeah, but little big planet wasn't a precision type game except for the the last level.  the rest of the game relies more or on puzzles.  It was the community levels that completely missed it and attempted to make mario or mega man levels when the physics didn't work.

I liked the main game of LBP, but all the "create play share" sucked.  making levels wasn't simple and other people's levels sucked.  lbp2 improved some things but it will be more of the same.  i'm passing on it for now since I know I won't be playing the "unlimited amount of community level".  I finished LBP1, played it again when the mgs stuff came out for it, tried playing it at friend house but quit after seeing the list of patches that needed downloading, and it remained untouched ever since.

I think dcharlie said it right about the KZ2 atmosphere.  I enjoyed playing the short campaign because everything was loud and flashy that was entertaining for approximatively four hours, or the length of the campaign.  It felt more like CoD mixed with Gears to me.  No plan on getting Killzone 3 since in the time between KZ2 and 3 I've played too many similar, and better, games.

And yeah, the ending was stupid since the majority of the game was you pushing the space nazi back; then it becomes an arena and the controls don't work.  I played some multiplayer after it and it was even more frustrating there and made me want to play cod4 again.  Though, it had some nice ideas to it like staying on the map as the game modes rotate.  Brink is doing something similar.

well, i have a slight insight into the game design from a friend, and i think the problem with the games design is down to time.

The opening segment is great, some of the levels where you go from room to room are great too - but then you have game lengthening tube shooting and it's there where the game falls apart : on the bridge, on the train and on the final lead up to the boss.

That said - making it to the door actually felt like an out and out struggle and really the game should have ended at that point as it felt like you'd struggled on through something. Though the number of choke points where respawning enemies would come charging down stairs at you ad infinitum took us into the horrible side of Call Of Duty (... no lets not do the CoD dance again)

I didn't like the bridge all that much after the first Holy Shit feeling, but the train is one of the better FPS levels I have played. I'll admit that the visual presentation had a lot to do with that, but the tight combat really worked there. I think that's where you first got to fight a few of the more lethal Helghast variants, and the grenades being affected by the wind was a nice touch. The courtyard could have been amazing, but by that time I was done with the "theater of war" thing.

It sounds like they are working for real on the variety so I'm on board, but the shit that people make gifs out of doesn't tickle me right. Gouging eyes, snapping necks, I think I'm past that. If it's like Gears where it's so over the top that it becomes happy splatter of it then sure, but Guerrilla seems intent on keeping (intentional) comedy to a minimum.

Why do so many PS3 games have laggy controls?  Is it because so many SPUs are used in graphics rendering for the PS3?  I remember reading somewhere that input lag is one of the disadvantages of multithreaded games.

So even the graphics aren't that great?  But graphics god dark10x said that Killzone 2 looked better than Crysis.   ???
The graphics are really, really nice.  game fucking sucks though.  It controls like Lair: The Shooter

Ha, it's been so long since anyone brought up Lair.  How was that turd forgotten?  It was responsible for many great EB moments with Abrader shilling it and TVC ripping it apart.

Putting aside whether Factor 5's games were actually fun, they did some great stuff technically on Nintendo consoles.  I always wondered if they failed so miserably because Sony made them create a showpiece for the PS3's 1080P and six-axis capabilities.

Didn't factor 5 do some shady shit that involved starting a new company and whatever?

The German branch is still around, btw.

From Wikipedia:

Quote
Factor 5 is currently involved in litigation with its former employees in the defunct North American Factor 5 company. The suit alleges that Factor 5 did not pay its employees for work during November and December, that employees were laid off without the required notice by law, that employees did not receive their vacation pay, and that the company misled the employees. The suit is filed in Marin Superior Court.

The guns look beefy and shooting sounds like you create orphans and widows by the bullet.  Which is completely ruined by the controls and enemies that soak up damage.  Black had a similar problem.

I only ever played the demo to Killzone 2 and I didn't encounter problems with the controls. I'm actually curious, can someone give me an example of what they mean when they say the controls are shit? If I understand correctly, do you have to aim with the fucking sixaxis?

There is a large delay in aiming, it just feels loose, and the turn speed is very slow even at maximum.  It also has this weird acceleration spike where fine aim and fast turning isn't balanced at all.

The sixaxis aiming is only with the sniper rifle.  Basically all the fine aiming is handled by tilting the controller around, but actually moving the scope around the street is still the right stick.  It was supposed to be that you had to keep the rifle still by keeping the controller or something.

I don't remember.  I played it normal or hard.  I know criticism of the Killzone 3 beta was how fast players get killed.  Even in KZ2 multiplayer everyone had large health bars, so it could have been one of the game's quirks.

You could kill an enemy quick if you got a headshot but the guns felt so loose, both in controls and general accuracy.  Gears has enemies that take up a lot of damage, but that felt more like design because you aim for their legs to put them down.

“Thing with Killzone 2 was, there were some quite technical problems in the controls, actually, and I think we’ve solved those now. There was a lot of lag… by fixing those issues we’ve lost a bit of that weighty feeling. We’ve tried to maintain that original experience, but if we’d kept it as slow, we’d run into the danger of losing some people, moving too far away from our competitors.”

http://www.vg247.com/2011/01/18/killzone-3-feels-more-fluid-and-stutters-less-says-guerrilla/#more-138745

I like how it was impossible to tell anybody at the time that there was anything wrong with Killzone 2 controls. And every comment the devs make is how they fixed the laggy controls from the first game.
