I think she's making this shit up.  Most self declared insiders are anything but.  It's like me claiming to be an insider and claiming a source told me that Microsoft is working on the Xbox 3.  We all know that an Xbox 3 is being made, but hasn't been officially revealed, therefore, I'm an INDUSTRY INSIDAH.

that Jeff Bell incident on gaf had some crazy consequences; the fact that the mods revealed the identity of the account owner scared the shit out of other 'actual industry' posters; thats why neogaf is a completly void of any public gaming industry people nowadays except for obvious marketing gigs .

MY SOURCE (lol) told me that some places mentioned that stuff in meetings and that employees were told to even more stfu on internet forums about who they really were, and how they (aka the companies) had spies roaming big forums for possible infractions.

GAF has such a bizarre history with industry people.

It's really too bad. There was a nice community started and fanboys ruined it to the point of no return. It could have been so much different.
Gaf probably changed the way NPD info was released. The 'tards ruined it for all.

I have never understood this hatred for sequels. Unlike movies, most game sequels actually correct things which were wrong or insufficient in the original title.

It's easier to understand it when it's a yearly release like Madden, or a licensed title which is basically an underachieving rip-off of an existing original game, art-swapped for characters in a movie people might care about for the next 8 weeks.

But original game IP is its own beast.

They correct things but they're usually very similar games, and there's very few sequels which are actually needed. Even worse are the existing IP bolt on "remixes" or whatever.

I'd rather see something new, which as you said original IP is best.

someone once wrote in an article

Quote
One of the reasons snobs like me (re: overeducated and underemployed) despise sequels in books and film is because they're just too easy. It takes a considerable amount of time and sweat to create, out of nothing, a fully-formed cast of characters, a world for them to inhabit, and the complete story of the crisis that will define their lives. Most people can't do it, or can't do it well. But it takes a whole lot less work to take an old story, wind up the crank, and get it moving again (which is incidentally why fanfiction and doujin have so many practitioners).

Take, for instance, the Rocky series. The first film, released in 1976, was a low-budget, surprise hit that told an original (if not familiar) story about an underdog defying incredible odds through determination and discipline. It won three Oscars, raked in almost seventeen times what it cost to make, and still has a 93% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Then along came Rocky II through VI (Rocky Balboa). Wind the crank, do it again. Wind the crank, do it again. Wind the crank, do it again. Wind the crank, do it again. Wind the crank, do it again. Repeat until Stallone dies or people stop buying tickets. Check Rotten Tomatoes again: Rocky II has a 68% rating, and each successive sequel dips lower until hitting its nadir at Rocky V, which received a critical beating during its theater run and maintains a 21% Rotten Tomatoes rating. (Of course, the reviews didn't stop it from earning almost $120 million worldwide, but it did make Stallone wait more than a decade before trying his luck with a fifth sequel.)

The qualities that make sequels get on conoisseurs' nerves so much is precisely what make studio suits and publishers love them so much. A sequel takes much, much less effort to market and assemble than an original film, and it's safe, regardless of how ill-conceived or shoddily-assembled it might be. Unless the first (or most recent) title left a particularly awful taste in the public mouth, there's no way another one won't turn a profit. As long as the public sees a familiar face in a familiar setting in a familiar scenario, they'll flock to the theater, book store, or Best Buy in droves for the latest installment, regardless of how terrible the critics and reviewers keep saying it is. (Not that all sequels are terrible by default, of course -- but I encourage you to take a moment to remember and consider The Matrix: Reloaded, Metal Gear Solid II, and the Cameronless Terminator 3.

i like creativity in games, and sequels just aren't creative, just think of nintendo... back in their prime they invented zelda! mario! metroid! f-zero! they tought mario needed a portable nemesis different from bowser and created wario, they made A FREAKING DETECTIVE ADVENTURE GAME! forward to 2010 and people are excited they get to pay 300$ so that they can play a game they already played back in 1998! >:( and the less i talk about mario galaxy 2 the less we'll derail this thread >:( >:( >:(

basicaly it works the same for game (maybe just mash some season together) simply put,if you have already reached a 4th sequel with doing the same shit over and over, you should stop

even then back in the psx area there were a shitload of developers where now you always see the same faces... square-enix... nintendo... atlus.... capcom....

I've always said one one of the biggest lies is this notion that gamers want "innovation". If anything what the hardcore want in generial (proven by what they actually buy) is new editions of the same series they've always played or new games that eerily ape the games they already like. Which is why nostalgia is so strong in the video game industry.

There will always need to be some balance between franchises and new ip's entering the market and sometimes I think the videogame market gets that mix wrong but the prohibitive cost of making games is why that is the case. Which is why the indie scene and XBLA/PSN is where you will get a more diverse line-up as long as you don't mind the lower budget shortcuts these games have to take.

I don't go to either extreme. I won't pretend that the indie scene is a shining hill on a light. It is full of nostalgia remakes conceptually also. But it is a more diverse scene than big budget hd titles are.

That being said I don't have a problem with big budget hd titles either. Hell I like COD. And I totally understand why the diversity of the market has decreased as games cost more and publishers hedge bets.

i think the ratio of blatant reiteration to original concepts is even worse in the indie scene than it is in the retail big box scene

yea i didn't want to ignite any fire but when i think indie,i think dozens and dozens of physic based puzzle's and artsy fartsy platformer

That's if by indie you mean only dudes working out of their garage on iphone apps maybe which is why I included tiers above that like XBLA or PSN titles.

There is always going to be a tier below $60 games that will more diverse in the marketplace going forward. That could be so called indie devs. Or it could be smaller budget titles that come out of large publishing houses. What matters is the budget. The more the budget. The less likely you are to see risk. Like I said I'm not extreme on any opinion I have. I like big budget games as much as the next guy. But what is viable at $60 dollars and multi million dollar budgets is a narrow selection of things that are likely to recoup that money. Same as the movie industry.

Take a random game from the past like SimAnt. When SimAnt came out back in the day, it was just marketed as a typical game among other typical games. That's the way the market use to be because everything cost roughly the same to make. Now if a title like that is going to come out its going to be a niche, or indie, or lower budget title. Simply because of how the market has changed.

yeah, there is just as much diversity in retail games as there is in those downloadable games.  There are as many twin switch arcade shooters than there are FPS games.  And while both are plenty diverse if you look around, it's odd how the balance changes so radically.  Last gen had so many mascot platformers and now there are a bunch of shooters.  The majority of exclusive Sony titles are shooters and it is pretty ridiculous, but last gen they had three platformer franchises.

If you want new and different games, you get xbla, steam or psn games. If you're bitching about new games not being made in our hobby you're not looking hard enough.

Just this year I've played:

- Ghost Trick
- Moon Diver
- Outland
- Nin-2 Jump

This is without bringing in the fact that there are tons of games I HAVEN'T played like Bulletstorm, Radient Historia and more.

If your problem is oversaturation of specific genres, you have a case. But if your problem is sequels, sequels, sequels then you're just bitching to bitch as I have played just as many original, new unique original ip titles this year as I have played sequels.

no i'm saying that for every original game there are a gazillion of milked cow so it's like saying that the glass isn't empty because there are few drops at the bottom

for example the fact that nintendo released those cool puzzle game on wiiware under the art style label doesn't mean they haven't milked the shit out of every IP they ever had

I'm just not seeing what's different. Gaming has ALWAYS been like this.

Super Mario Bros. was hugely successful. What do they do? Make two more Mario Bros.

Megaman? Let's make 6 Mega Man games!

Sonic? Let's make four main games, a fucking rocking pinball game, a crappy faux 3d game AND a puzzle game.

Street Fighter? King of Fighters? Samurai Shodown? Final Fantasy? Dragon Quest? Monkey Island?

Sequels is nothing new to gaming and in reality, are a blessing because sequels very quite often go in different areas that their prequels didn't. In all of these cases, the first game is NEVER better than the sequels. The sequels always enhance and improve upon the formula towards what we have today.

This is where gaming has a benefit over other mediums. Very rarely do movies successfully make genre shifts. The few I can think of are Alien, Aliens and...well, that's about it. But the point is with movies it'd be odd to make a tone or genre shift and usually it is, to a fault. But in games, since it revolves around DESIGN (mostly) and not STORY (mostly) designers can take the core principles of a game and make it feel completely different.

Few mediums can do this, and gaming revels in it, probably to a fault, but I see it as a good thing that I can play Final Fantasy IV and then play VIII and appreciate that they play like completely different games with completely a different emphasis.

the problem is not that "sequels exist" the problem is that we are getting more and more sequels while we are getting less original games and those sequel are getting more the samey as we progress

monkey island got 4 games behind it,but in the meanwhile lucasart also did 2 indiana jones games, day of the tentacle, full throttle, sam and max and the dig

there are more original lucasart game than sequel of monkey island

it's true that nintendo made two more mario games but as i said in the meanwhile they invented zelda, metroid, made a shitload of small arcadey games like ice climbers, created donkey kong.... look at 3DS software lineup and there are 2 ports,ANOTHER Nintendo Dogs,ANOTHER mario kart,ANOTHER animal crossing and a mario game whose main attraction is that THE LOGO FEATURES AN ELEMENT THAT HINTS AT A GAME RELEASED 23 YEARS AGO!

kid icarus is probably the most original game on the thing, and it was supposed to be a new game before some nintendo executive decided to reskin the whole thing just to appeal to nfags

and seriously you want to talk about final fantasy? barring the fact that each final fantasy is completly different and that the name gets slapped there just so that fanboy can buy the game and then whine about it for whatever reason comes at the moment and repeat the whole process over and over,do we want to talk about all the shit squaresoft did during the psx era? i wouldn't even know where to begin with!

you know what's the next squaresoft big release? FF13-2wearegoingtorecycletheshitoutofeverything... do we want to talk about all the spinoff they had going with kingdom hearts? heck isn't one of them coming from 3DS too? the world ends with you might have been the last original project coming from squaresoft that i can think of and it was 3 years ago! the squaresoft of now is busy pissing over parasite eve and making rom hacks of FF4

and you mention street fighter but back in the day, after street fighter alpha 3 you know what happened?
this happened

todays after the revival of a classic, you know what happens? another revival of a classic >:(
capcom doesn't go around making new fighting game, they go around saying "ehy guys! if you beg enough maybe we'll do a darkstalker revival!"

These days, I just collect cheap ass PSP titles.  I say collect because it seems like the market for this is dead and will get deader once the NGP comes out.  Unless I sell them for at most a dollar or two, they won't be moving anywhere.

Yeah, the GAF one. I had no idea DW's character designs took chances and steered away from the usual historical Chinese get-up.

Yeah, I quit buying UMD games because of this.  Nobody s going to care about older PSP games later on...hell, they don't now!  There's probably 1-2 Japanese games I may purchase, and that's about it for the PSP for me.  I already barely touch it as-is.  I just play 3DS (for SSF4) now.

That's Zhu Rong.  She and Meng Huo are from the Nanman tribe, who are depicted as more tribal and live in jungles in various adaptions of the RoTK.  I don't know if the character actually existed in real life.  Rather doubtful since the "real" Zhu Rong is a Chinese god of fire.

She's considered a "barbarian", hence the design.

In terms of history, she's likely not real to begin with as her character's name, Zhu Rong, is the Chinese god of fire. She claims to be a descendant of Zhu Rong in the Romance of the Three Kingdoms novel. So Koei kinda has free reign when it comes to Zhu Rong and her husband Meng Huo.

I'll probably just throw them in the trash when I'm done with them.  Considering how I'm paying $5-6 (including shipping) for these games, it's not a big deal if I don't make any money back on them.  I've spent more money on worse things.  That or just stash them in the closet.  As long as I get my $1/hour of entertainment for these games, it isn't a big deal if I can't resell them to anyone.

I wouldn't go that far...imma get a case and manual, and I always try to buy new unless absolutely necessary.  With so many deals all over the place, buy crap used often makes no sense.  Last week I went to Gamestop to pick up BlazBlue CS for 360, because they had it for $19.99 new.  The guy immediately goes for the used copy, which is TWO DOLLARS LESS.  At least I didn't have to argue about it when I asked for the new one.

I'm a little alarmed when people consider a penis skyscraper rising up into a puckered anus to be subtle.

Yeah, I noticed that too. He's either been hitting the bottle a lot lately, or really, really wants to be junior'd/banned.
