When it stops being obvious there is one. I'm not saying it covers all the games, but it's there. You don't need Aonuma's super secret doc to see that.

This is probably true for the most part, but it's those references I'm referring to as the timeline. The problem comes when people hear "timeline" and imagine that Nintendo has a bunch of future games mapped out already, which just isn't the case and has never been.

things like this are just cute asides to me. the stories in those games isn't anything serious, essentially it's just to give you a reason to move from left to right. the small things like cranky being the original donkey kong is like galaga and dig dug "being in the same universe". doesn't matter at all, just a fun little trivial thing.

also, I've always considered the zelda stories to more or less be retellings of the same story; in that it is "the legend of zelda" and and all the games feature the same mytheme and structure. in the end I don't particularly care as I haven't enjoyed a zelda game in a while, but whatevs.

Since Zelda takes itself more seriously than Donkey Kong I pay attention to that stuff more. And the references to other games do, in general, enhance my experience while playing it.

I DON'T want it to become fricking FF13 or anything. What it does now is completely fine. Thicker story threads than most of Nintendo's other franchises without devolving into melodramatic, overwrought FF or MGS BS.
