It's easy to accept gay people and to have them as friends, but gay marriage is something that you have to fight your religion and experiences to accept, which isn't the easiest thing to do.

It's a big leap he has to get over. Part of the marriage definition is that marriage leads to procreation. To accept gay marriage is to accept that his church is wrong on a big issue and to rewrite his own definition of marriage. It's not easy when a church's teachings have been a part of you life since the beginning.
